Tuoro sul Trasimeno is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Perugia in the Italian region Umbria, located about 25 km northwest of Perugia. Tuoro sul Trasimeno borders the following municipalities: Castiglione del Lago, Cortona, Lisciano Niccone, Magione, Passignano sul Trasimeno. It is located on the northern shore of the Lake Trasimeno. It's well famous for "The Battle of Lake Trasimene", a major battle in the Second Punic War. The Carthaginians under Hannibal defeated the Romans under the consul Gaius Flaminius. The battle is one of the largest and most successful ambushes in military history. An ancient tradition says that because of the blood, which for over three days filled the water, that a small stream feeding the lake was renamed Sanguineto, the "Blood River". In the surroundings of Lake Trasimene, there are further areas which retain a particular meaning, including Ossaia ("Charnel House, Place of Bones"), Sepoltaglia ("Sepulchre"), Caporosso ("Cape Red"), Piegaro ("Subdued Place"), Preggio (from peggio, "worse"), Pugnano ("Place of battles"), and Pian di Marte ("Field of Mars").
Lake Trasimeno is located directly in the centre of Italy between Umbria and Tuscany, a feature that has made it a destination for many foreign tourists who, attracted by its peaceful atmosphere, choose it as a starting point for their vacation. Surrounded by rolling hills blanketed with vineyards, olive trees and wheat fields, three islands emerge from the waters of the lake: Maggiore Island, where you can buy the characteristic lace work, Minore Island and Polvese Island, which is owned by Province and is a natural oasis, one of the most fascinating places in the entire territory. As you walk along the lake shores you can discover small beaches or practice an array of sports: from cycling, hiking, horseback riding, sailing or golf to the increasingly popular activity of bird watching.
The characteristic crafts of Lake Trasimeno include embroidery on tulle and lace, the most famous of which is “Irish Lace” from Maggiore Island.
In the local cuisine an important role is played by dishes made with lake fish, the most well-known of which is “tegamaccio”, a sort of fish stew. This is also where a delicate extra virgin olive oil and red wines are produced, renowned in Italy and abroad.TripAdvisor property ID 3299640...Read more
