'Pondok Jambangan' ( formally known as Pondok Indah) is a sprawling colonial dream home, perched on the edge of the SAYAN RIDGE just a little down stream from the Four Seasons. It faces north, overlooking the Ayung river, 80 feet below and is beautifully shaded in the afternoons unlike the 5 star hotels along the river that face west. The feel of the house is like stepping back into the early days of adventure in the 1930s, but with all modern conveniences.
This is not a business, but we do sometimes let the house if we are not living here.
Pondok Jambangan was last renovated in 2013. Very romantic, very comfortable. The views are a panorama of rice terraces, coconut groves and across the river, the Hindu temple of Bonkasa is glimpsed in the distance. It is difficult to do justice to the dramatic view in photographs. It is truly a private panorama from the dress circle of Sayan. Being so elevated above the rice terraces gives the impression you are looking at a postcard from horizon to horizon. There is always something to look at...ducks grazing in the rice terraces, farmers at work, temple processions to the river below, squirrels in the trees. It is very private and an experience of uniquely Balinese traditions. Hindu rituals are discretely carried out by our staff everyday at the compounds 4 small temples. You will find small offerings left on stairs and pathways and floral tributes and incense on little alters in each building. It is mysterious and beautiful.
The traditional mud walled compound features four uniquely designed dark teak wood and thatched roof buildings including three bedroom bungalows, spacious open Balinese terrace living areas and a Bale lounge room/dinning area, surrounded by lush gardens. It is suitable for couples or a couple of families. The bedrooms are large with a substantial mango shaped pool set among palm trees and a profusion of orchids and lush tropical garden.

Arcadian paradise- Sayan Ridge- Best in Bali Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
Additional Location Information
Baung is a small rural village in Sayan, just 10 minutes by car from the restaurants and twinkling lights and bustle of Ubud central. Our village is very pretty and welcoming and runs along the Sayan ridge overlooking the Ayung River. There are many beautiful walks near the house through rice fields and by the river. There is a local cycling tour company in the village and white water rafting nearby. You can even have a splash in the Ayung RIver. There are only a handful of private houses owned by foreigners in our village so it is very Balinese. Around Pondok Jambangan are banana and coconut groves and wooded shady walks.Often there is a Hindu Temple ceremony with the sound of gongs and and a colourful passing parade in the rice fields across the river.
There is a small corner store in the village with western items ie cigarettes, soft drinks, shampoo etc but our staff will help you out if you need something and go to the shop for you.
We have parking for three cars if you wish to rent more vehicles. . Scooters are very cheap to hire and fun to get around on.

Pondok Indah- how can one describe it... It's like something out of South Pacific! The staff are warm and friendly. The 3 course home cooked meals are fantastic.
You will need to either hop on a scooter, drive a car or hire a driver to get into the main village. (big walk!) But honestly it was a chore to get up off the day bed to even leave the compound!
Breathtaking views and bedrooms that look like something out of those interior design books- "oh, but nobody actually lives in these places"... Yes they do, and it is at Gary and Julie's beautiful property. Thanks so much for opening up your wonderful paradise!

I had the absolute pleasure of staying at Pondok Indah last year & consequesntly decided to move to Bali! It would arguable be one of the most stunning locations I have ever exoperienced. Its old Bali at its best with fabulous traditional yet comfortable decor throughout. There are lots of huge daybeds everywhere for maximum relaxation and the dinig bale is superb and extremely well equipped with fabulous linen & silverware. They've thought of everything! The staff are like family, some having worked there for nearly 20 years and in their care there is nothing you will need for. The food is exquisite, Komang is a 5 star chef & loves to bake cakes so be ready for a few extra kilos! The property looks over the Sayan River and rice fields, and the secluded position means absolute peace & quiet. You won't want to leave!
Thank you Dee Dee. It was a pleasure having you at Pondok Indah. The staff really enjoyed looking after you though I must state for the record that Komang in NOT a 5 star chef. She is very good cook. We are glad you enjoyed yourself and hope to see you again soon.

We rang in the new year during our stay at Pondok Indah. Nibbling delicious morsels from our own kitchen, we watched fireworks light up the entire ridge and all along the valley as the staff brought us chilled juices. It was a truly astounding aspect - impossible to describe in words, but such a privilege to have experienced. All the staff are warm and welcoming, the house is a complete dream, and the master bedroom/pavilion is like a movie set. You do need to drive, or have a driver, if you want to indulge in some village life, as it is a big walk into town. But if you want a holiday like no other, and genuine peace and seclusion, this will fit the bill. Lolling in that pool knowing you are high high above the gorge is a kind of head-trip. And the collection of art and ephemera is original and enticing. More gado gado!!! More time! More visits! Thanks Julie and Gary for opening up this paradise to us mortals.
