Fishing. Fly fishing for wild brown trout in our private waters on our farm is for guest use only and salmon fishing is also an option (licence required). The rivers Suir and Tar provide the natural boundaries around our farm at Kilmaneen making it an ideal location for your fishing holiday in Ireland. There is approximately 1km of fishing on the Suir and 0.5km on the Tar. These rivers provide good fly fishing for wild brown trout fishing and salmon fishing. This is a private stretch of fishing consequently it is a very quiet and relaxing place to fish. Equipment can be hired by prior arrangement through us and we are able to offer our guests a gillie service and this must be booked in advance. The Suir is renowned as a dry-fly fishery. The Tar and it's tributaries, the Duag and the Shanbally hold good stocks of trout up to 1.5kg and better. The peak of the trout fishing is from early May to mid-June for day-long fishing, at dusk for the rest of the summer and during the day and evening in September. At these times, there is usually no shortage of feeding trout.
Pet friendly (dogs only). River Cottage is pet friendly with lots of options for exercising dogs on the farm. The Cottage is perfectly located for the Show Dog Circuit of Ireland and the Coursing Festival in Clonmel.
Sight -seeing. Located just 10ml/ 16km off the M8 (exit 10 & 11), Kilmaneen is the perfect base for touring the south east of Ireland, being just 1.5 hours from Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Kilkenny and just 2 hours from Dublin. Grow Your Own courses. Around River Cottage is the farm at Kilmaneen where we grow most of our own fruit and vegetables according to organic practices. We use these fresh and wholesome ingredients in the preparation of meals for our guests but there is always more than we can use so we offer the surplus to our self-catering guests at River Cottage. Kevin is the gardener and he runs courses during the growing season where he demonstrates and teaches participants the basics of growing your own fruit and vegetable. We keep bees at Kilmaneen also and we run introductory courses on beekeeping also.
Rest and Relaxation. As you can see there is plenty to do at River Cottage but you can also do nothing at all if that is what you prefer. The quiet, peaceful setting facilitates sound sleep and restful days. There are no motorways or busy roads only the wind in the trees and the song of the birds to provide calm and peace.
