“Home from home with an awful lot more ...” For us La Mulinella was idyllic, from the thick stone walls and curved ceilings of the house itself to the unique view out of each window. It's rustic charm combined with every mod-con makes for the most relaxing holiday. The only problem for our family of four, children aged seven and twelve was that everytime we left the house all we wanted to do was get back to it!!(if you call that a problem)Ping pong by the pool, hammocks in the shade, a bread/dough maker and last but defeniteley not least a traditional wood burning pizza oven.It is "A little gem" We thank the family for being so helpful and sharing their wonderful home with us...

LaPorcilaia - Villa apartment.Orvieto-Umbria ,Views Bolsena Lake

Orvieto villa

  • 2 bedrooms

“Fabulous place to stay, helpful owners, perfect location” This is the second time we have stayed at this fabulous villa. We have always found the owners to be welcoming, extremely helpful and very friendly. The accommodation is finished and maintained to a high standard with all home comforts and the appliances you might require. The upstairs apartment is spacious, clean and very comfortable. The garden and surrounding areas are lovely and once again highly maintained. Even though car hire is a must, For us, the location is perfect. There is a short and pleasurable drive (approx 15-20 mins) to the beautiful shores of Lake Bolsena, where you can spend some time in the medieval old town or relax at different points around the lake. The location of the villa makes it very easy for taking in the numerous sights locally and a little further afield. There is so much to see in this beautiful area of Italy that we are going to have to return!

“Great holiday for everyone” We were a combination of three families, including grandparent, cousins, friends, including children from 9 - 23 and there was something for everyone. Lots of room for kids to run around in grounds, big pool with lots of chairs/lounges, great outdoor eating morning, noon and night, good kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms in abundance. Ipod dock and books for everyone. We travelled as far as Rome, Perugia, Todi, Spoleto, etc. Highly recommended.

Agriturismo Frallarenza Large Apartment

Orvieto apartment

  • 3 bedrooms
  • 2 bathrooms
  • sleeps 10

“A gem near Orvieto” We loved agriturismo Frallarenza, near Orvieto. We were 3 women staying in the "small apartment", which was a perfect size. The owners, Francesco and Serena, have the gift of ensuring your needs are met (and exceeded) but allow you to explore and enjoy on your own, while they tend to the hard work of running a farm. Their kindness, enthusiasm and passion for what they do is apparent. The apartment was enhanced with family furniture and hand made ceramics and weavings by Serena. Enjoying the bounty of the land, such as their newly pressed olive oil, fresh fruit eggs, as well as Serena's treats were a highlight. The house is solar powered, and there was always hot water and heat when needed. (We were there in a warm late October, but the nights and mornings were cool.) Francesco spent unhurried time with us, giving us ideas and maps for our day trips. We stayed for 4 nights, but wished we had more time to slow down and savor Frallarenza. The setting among the groves and the Umbrian hills was magical. Highly recommended!

“Excellent villa in a beautiful location” We were three families holidaying in this wonderful villa with our children, ages 9-16. The kids loved the pool and us adults enjoyed soaking up the Umbrian sun in the well-maintained gardens. We explored the local area-Montepulciano, Isla Maggiore and Castiglione del Lago (market Wednesday am). We also did Siena on the train. Would have liked to have done more, but a week is not enough. Katia was such a welcoming host, nothing was too much trouble. Thank you very much Katia, hope to see you in a year or two!

Casa Archi at Maridiana Alpaca

Umbertide villa

  • 3 bedrooms
  • 2 bathrooms
  • sleeps 6

“Wondrous place and time” Maridiana is wondrous, with a forested backdrop overlooking Umbria's pastures and fields. Four Californians soaked up culture, especially food and wine, for an autumn week. Uncongested and slow-paced, outside of assisi and Perugia, we effortlessly explored the villages and hill-towns with our host's good advise. Casale is spacious and comfortable, although the beds are a bit firm. The stairway demands focus, and head-dipping; the upper road is best avoided without a high clearance vehicle. But the house reflects its history, and I would return unreservedly -- especially to sit on the lawn at sunset with a glass of sangiovese while wandering alpacas nibble the grass.

Tavernelle di Panicale villa

“green outdoors plus charm at home” I stayed in the "Fontanelle" farmhouse of Colle San Paolo for 2 weeks in July, with an extended family of ten adults and 5 children- and we had an excellent stay and wondeful time-- the check-in, introduction to the rooms, and overall responsiveness was warm and excellent. The home is furnished beautifully and charmingly comfortable, with spectacular views particularly on the east and southern sides. All the amenities are excellent, including the common areas: the infinity swimming pool with beautiful view of the valley, patio/garden with lavender and ancient olive tree, shaded barbecue area and the common (games/eating) room- as well as of course the pristine woods around the farmhouse. We received excellent tips on where to go for wine-tasting; medieval villages (where we met a jolly band of Franciscan faithful walking for peace); donkey walks for the children; jazz music in medieval castles; and hidden monastries off the tourist map. Most of all we enjoyed the fresh air, beautiful views and relaxed setting at the swimming pool with lots of space for meals in the common room and nearby walks in the early evening. We enjoyed every minute, emersed in the Italian countryside, with lots to do nearby whenever we felt the impulse to leave this comfortable and charming home.

About Umbria

Tucked away in central Italy, Umbria is one of the country's smallest regions in terms of population, but what it lacks in people it makes up for in charm. Scenic and welcoming with a rich artistic and cultural heritage, Umbria is home to some of the country's most underrated towns and attractions. If you're looking for a unique and genuine Italian holiday experience, Umbria fits the bill perfectly.

Some of the top attractions in Umbria include:

  • Perugia: Umbria's friendly and lively capital is a vibrant and enjoyable place to visit, with a palpable joie de vivre at every turn. Perugia is also home to a remarkably well-preserved medieval old town.
  • Assisi: The birthplace of St. Francis, Assisi is best-known today for housing one of the world's most impressive assemblages of medieval art. Visit the city's Basilica to see an astonishing collection of frescoes.
  • Castiglione del Lago: Wonderful restaurants make this small lakeside community well worth a visit. Bring your camera and prepare to lose your heart to the placid charms of this picturesque town.
  • Outdoor exploration: Umbria walking tours are very rewarding for visitors, and cycling in Umbria is a delight during the warmer seasons. You can also enjoy hiking in Umbria in any of the many regional and national parks and nature preserves.
  • Vineyards and wineries: There are many vineyards and wineries in the region that offer tours, but one of the most noteworthy is Cantina di Girasole, near the border of Tuscany.

If you're in Umbria in late May or early June, be sure to head to Spello for the Infiorata flower festival. Held 60 days after Easter to celebrate the ascension of the risen Christ, this pageantry of this event is not to be missed even if you're not Catholic.

For your stay in Umbria, a vacation rental makes the ideal accommodation. No other option gives you such an authentic and homely taste of Italian life, and options in all budget ranges are plentiful throughout Umbria's beautiful towns and cities. Vacation rentals are perfect whether you're enjoying a romantic getaway, on holiday with your family, or traveling with a group of friends.

If you want to see more of Italy, Umbria's central location makes it easy to move on to further adventures. The region of Lazio, home to the capital city of Rome, borders Umbria, as do the beautiful coastal regions of Marche, Abruzzo and Tuscany.

Spoleto, Umbria, Italy, charming country house
Lovely old stylish Italian house in a beautiful quiet surrounding

The very friendly and welcoming landlady awaited us upon arrival and showed us around in the house. All you need to cook or wash is available, as are linens. This old house has a nice shielded off terrace to eat outside, and a bigger garden to relax with flowers, fruit and olive trees in it. Inside the rooms and living area are spacious, and it has a nice big bathroom. The hidden road that leads to the house has stunning views. Very quiet surrounding. Still the town is easy to reach; it is not too busy or noisy, it has lots of small shops and museums to visit. We can recommand it to anyone.see more

Beautiful apartment, perfect location

This was my second stay at Palazzo Febei and it was as wonderful as the first. The house is lovely: spacious, comfortable, guest-friendly and Ale and his father Cesare are perfect hosts. It would not be possible to find a better location. Staying in the heart of Orvieto made us feel like we belonged there. Just perfect!see more
Agriturismo Querceto
Great location and host!

This was a great location to stay with our children. We rented the two apartments though we ended up using only one for emergency reasons. The owner, Giuseppe, was absolutely wonderful and helped us out throughout our issues. They are going to expand the property and add a pool! Only thing we missed was a washing machine, but i am sure it is probably in their future plans. For those of you who have gluten issues, Gubbio is great for celiacs!see more
Villa Capanne - Luxury Umbrian Villa Sleeping 12
Lovely time in Umbria. Villa Capanne a beautiful and special place!

We just returned back to the States after spending a week in Umbria! We were 3 couples that stayed at Villa Capanne and everything went smoothly and it exceeded our expectations. Chrissie and David are terrific and could not be nicer. They really take pride in their work and it shows! Villa Capanne is located beautifully on the top of the mountain and the views are spectacular overlooking the golf course and the castle! The villa is very well equipped with the comforts of home and we liked the location so that we each day could make trips to different hill towns in the area. We had Alessandra, a wonderful chef cook for us the first and the last evening and we cooked dinners a few nights in between. After a full day sightseeing it was so comfortable to stay at the villa with a glass of wine and enjoy sitting on the patio. We hope to be back soon and we can all recommend Villa Capanne! Thank you Chrissie and David!see more
