Utica log cabin

“Another awesome visit to Kishauwau!” This is our third trip to Kishauwau. They never disappoint. This place is absolutely amazing. It is quiet and tranquil---set back among tall trees, and a nice distance from the other cabins on the property. The owners, Jamie and Theresa are very kind, accommodating and eager to please. They make you feel like family here. With Starved Rock and Matthieson State Parks, plus the wineries, shops and restaurant/bars in nearby Utica, there is always something to do. But really, it is very tempting to just kick back and relax in your cozy, comfortable, and immaculately clean Kishauwau Cabin!

“Peaceful” Two-nights in a relatively secluded cabin with no internet or cell access allowed for time to slow down. I could solely focus on enjoying each moment. The cabin was amazingly well-kept, well-furnished, and pleasant. It was more comfortable than any box-hotel. I will go back. It was a great chance to regenerate the batteries.

“Perfect place for treating yourself to a quite and peaceful geta” We had a great time in the Zonta cabin. All cabins are nicely spaced out. The owners are working on a new koi point which is very pretty already. Check in/out took just a minute. Love the fact that there is no cell phone (T-mobile), cable or internet service in the cabins. If you can't live without a phone, the owners offer you to use theirs. Owners are very friendly and nice to talk to. The reason why we choose this place is because we could bring our senior dog with who had a great time laying around and smelling fresh air. The cabins are equipped with everything you need and really offer a lot of space. The owner's dog is a great entertainer and loves to play with kids. It is just a short drive to the next town, Starved Rock or Matthiesen Park. We will be back soon, but probably stay longer next time. It was a great experience and I told all my customers about it already:-) Thank you!

“Terrific, as always!” We love coming to Kishauwau for a quiet get-away! This is our 3rd year staying here...the first two years were just the two of us. This year we decided to bring the kids along to see what this beautiful place has to offer. We will still come back in the Fall to spend time here without the kids! The cabins are always well-kept, clean and quaint!

“Cabin Birthday Retreat” Couldn't have picked a better place for 3 friends to celebrate their 25th birthday while meeting each others friends. Stayed inside to great food and drinks and the 2014 winter olympics. Furniture recently updated, cabin was more than spacious, even if you had 14 people. All the supplies you would need are located within the cabin and anything else you may need as far as questions or accommodations the owners were more than happy to assist with. Roads were even paved for us after a cold and snowy chicago winter. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful and secluded weekend getaway from the city life. Will definitely be back again!

About Utica

A lovely slow-paced river town, Utica in LaSalle County is the location of an enchanting annual Bald Eagle migration around the turn of the year. It sits at the foothills of the stunning Starved Rock State Park – a fabulous outdoor adventure lover’s playground, full of accessible summer walks and winter trails.

Find your perfect vacation rental property in Utica with FlipKey, and start your adventure.

About Utica

The original village of Utica was established back in 1852, but its residents swiftly relocated nearby after flooding of the Illinois River in the 1830s. Although its name is now North Utica, villagers and visitors alike never bother with the ‘North’ part.

Surrounded by natural beauty, the town is most well-known for its location to Starved Rock Park where, sliced in amongst all the stunning forestry, rushing streams, waterfalls and wildlife, sit 18 canyons of sandstone rock, formed during the Ice Ages.

Another claim to fame of the town is Burgoo—a traditional pioneer stew cooked over a wooden fire for up to 18 hours and which residents celebrate in the form of an annual festival. The original recipe contained venison or squirrel, but today it’s mostly vegetables with a variety of herbs and spices mixed in with cracked wheat.

What to do in Utica

Visit Starved Rock Park to trek along its riverbanks and visit the many waterfalls or hike amongst its 13 miles of marked forest trails. Swim, fish or sail in the river, hire a horse and go riding, or camp out for the whole weekend. The park is named after a tale of local Indians starving there there after being forced to hide from a fellow tribe.

Pop on over to August Hill Winery to sample the home-made wines and accompanying cheese plates.

Learn about Wild Bill Hickok's ties to the region as well the effects of the Civil War on Utica at the LaSalle County Historical Society & Museum. There’s an old school house and blacksmith shop as well as photos of the town’s tragic mining disaster in 1909.

If visiting in October then stay for the Burgoo Festival where you'll meet craftsmen, musicians, foodies and encounter countless flea market stalls.

Top travel tips for Utica

Don’t ask why there’s no game meat in the Burgoo stew any longer – it was banned for environment health reasons. Meanwhile, if you’ve never tried ‘gator' before then for some genuine southern 'gator' burgers or stew, head over to Ron McFarlain's famous Cajun Connection eatery. The chef proprietor grew up in the swamps of Louisiana where 'gator' featured regularly on the menu.

Nearby Buffalo Rock Park is a great camping ground but you'll need a permit to do so beforehand. The campsites can only be reached via food or bike.

If you really want a taste of the great outdoors and to experience life as an early pioneer or Native American, then there's plenty of opportunity to do so in Utica's fabulous nearby state parks. Or even just appreciate the peace and quiet this quaint friendly town has to offer.

Whichever you fancy, FlipKey will have a property to suit your vacation. Search for it today!

AWESOME!

Me and my fiancé came here to get away from the demanding job that he has. The first day he wasn't giving in to the idea of relaxing. By day 2 he was all into" the quite." All I have heard about since we got home is when can we go back? We are hoping on coming back in September. We stayed in the Pines and couldn't have asked for anything better! We are so glad that there is no cable, phones or internet. We only watched 2 movies, but played board games, used the fire pit and LOVED the porch swing.see more

Winter Get-Away

My husband and I, with our 16 year old son, stayed in the Trading Post Cabin for one night. We were very impressed with the entire experience. The cabin was very clean, which is important to us. You have everything you will need in the kitchen, plenty of towels in the bathroom, and comfortable beds. The wood stove was very cozy. They sell firewood by the bundles and will deliver it to your door. We would like to go back in warmer weather to really enjoy the grounds and being outdoors. The area is wonderful and a short 10 minute drive to Starved Rock State Park. We loved the free movie rentals in the office, and it is nice to still see an honor system in this day and age for buying a few things you might want in the office. No cell phone reception here, but why not get away from all that for a little while and unplug!see more
