Additional Location Information

St Jean de Monts is a famous seaside resort on the Vendee coast. Its flat fine sandy beach stretching over 8km, long renowned as one of the best in France, is a real paradise for children as it is extremely safe, and with an excellent quality of water. It is good for windsurfing, jet skis, char voile and most importantly, pleasant swimming. The ocean tide phenomen is typical from the Atlantic seashore, there are 2 low tides and high tides per day. The climate is wonderful with over 200 days of sunshine and over 2,500 hours of sun. Even from early spring and late autumn the weather is very mild and has warm breezes. The new town by the sea with its esplanade and cafes, is separated from the old town by wooded dunes and a vast forest of pine trees. In the evening, you will enjoy wandering along the beach esplanade and the lively Avenue de la Mer, the pedestrian road leading to the beach. During the summer season St Jean has all the modern sides of a bustling beach town with many things to do and see.
Here is a selection: In the old town, the Church of St Jean Baptiste has been rebuilt in local style with exotic wood on its bell tower. Enjoy the bustle of the market every day from June to September with the excellent local fresh food produce. There is an Art gallery, Library and Cinema, and some old cottages called "bourrines". The "Forªt domaniale" has over 750 hectares of maritime pines, acacias, green oak trees planted by Napoleon III, crisscrossed by many footpaths and cycle paths. You can also visit the forest on horse back, and you will even find an Adventure park through the trees. Enjoy the early morning freshness with its iodised air and smell of the pines and the shade it gives from the afternoon heat. Wander along Avenue de la Forªt, a wide avenue bordered by flowers, to the sea and Avenue de la Mer: cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops and clothes shops, creperies and an ambiance of fun with its night market and even a Casino! Hire a 'Rosalie', 6 seater bikes, or pick up the little train along its route from town to beach.
There are most sports available: an excellent 18 hole Golf course (situated besides the sea, on sandy soil, giving it the advantage of being practicable all year round), mini golf, sailing, char voile, canoe trips along the salt marshes, horse riding available at 4 centres, tennis, kite flying, boules, skate boarding, archery, and shooting. In summer, there is a kid's festival, and an international kite festival. You can even enter the annual "Triathlon International" - swimming, cycling, and running. There are many walks and cycle rides organised in the area. (maps at the tourist office).
You will find a Thalasso Spa centre and Les Thermes Marines - the largest swimming pool in France with sea water heated to 34°, with a fitness room and spas, physiotherapy, aqua gym and massages - spoil yourself and have a treatment day!
Several concerts and shows are organised during each summer, and there are many art exhibitions in the Palais des Congres.
The town offers many restaurants where you will discover the specialities of Vendee as the « Mogettes » - beans served with famous braised ham of Vendee- an archetypal meal of Vendee! You will have the choice between oysters from Bouin, Beauvoir or Noirmoutier, scampis, crabs, shrimps and whelks that are daily fished offshore, or even « pignons » (little shells that you can yourselves collect in the sand on the beach). Enjoy the sardines from St Gilles Croix de Vie, the sole and the bass, without forgetting the « civelle » (a young eel). Frog legs and grilled eels are part of the most ancient and famous dishes of the marshes. Do not miss the 'brioche' of Vendee, and the traditional desserts like the custard tart of the marshes (flan vendeen), or the 'Caillebottes' cow cottage cheese to eat cool with sugar or honey.
While in Saint Jean de Monts don't forget to visit the island of Noirmoutier which lies just off the coast after Notre Dame de Monts. The view that you get from the bridge is magnificent, but you can also reach the island by the « gois » which is cobbled causeway only passable at low tide and covered by the sea for the rest of the day!
Planete Sauvage, between Noirmoutier and Nantes, is a safari park, where you can observe around 150 species at close quarters. The tour of the park (in your own car) takes around two hours and you can see giraffes, elephants, lions and bears to name but a few.
Visit Escal'Atlantic in Saint-Nazaire. It will allow you to discover the cabins, the restoration rooms, and the engine room on board a big transatlantic liner of legend.
Once in St Nazaire, why not discover the famous resort of La Baule, or the fishing ports of Le Croisic or La Turballe, or visit Guerande and the salt marshes of the Regional Natural Park of Bri¨re.
Le Puy du Fou located at Les Epesses (125 km from St Jean) with its Grand Parcours, is a park of 30 hectares proposing diverse shows like the falconry, the chivalry, the Gallo-Roman stadium, and enclosing a medieval city, a village from the XVIII century, and many other attractions. In the evening during the summer week ends, attend the 'Cinescenie'- outdoor big show where more than 800 volunteers relate the history of the Vendee- Sound and light with many special effects, fireworks and stunts.
Going South from Saint Jean you can visit Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, a boating centre as well as a great, sandy, seaside resort, full of interesting shops and markets in a pedestrian area.
