Our newly renovated stone-built 18th century cottage “Chez Parsonage” has many original features and modern facilities. Situated in the tiny farming hamlet of La Marteille surrounded by rolling farmland and distant forest it is well placed for short trips to many lovely areas in the Dordogne region.

Enjoy your vacation in the peaceful countryside; the warmth and friendliness of the local people; the farm with chickens and ducks running freely, cows quietly grazing. This is a lovely area for walks through the fields to neighbouring hamlets and for visiting the roman circuit of churches.

Additional Location Information

La Marteille is a traditional French hamlet with a retired farm opposite and a working farm at the far end. Walking trails are clearly marked and lead to other nearby hamlets. A short walk away is a brocante Ali BaBa Antiques to browse around.

For fresh bread and all provisions take a short drive or walk to the charming and ancient village of La Tour Blanche; nearby there is a working windmill set high in a park with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Riberac is a busy market town useful for large stores, business, banking and the not-to-be-missed Friday market which is one of the best and biggest in the area. The French go early for provisions and fresh vegetables while the tourists and ex-pats browse for mementos and meet up for coffee in the many restaurants.

A 30 minute drive will take you to Brantôme encircled by the River Dronne. Leasurely boat trips are available around the town or for the more adventurous rent a canoe and paddle along the river where you will be met and taken back to where you started. This is a favourite pastime with tourists, as well as visiting the shops and outdoor restaurants in this most attractive town. There is an amazing 11th century abbey built into the cliff face and shops built into the overhanging rocks.

A 20 minute drive from here will take you to the famous Grottes de Villars where you will see 18,000 year old cave art with stalactites and stalagmites.

Set on the River Dronne the Chateau de Bourdeilles is only a 20 minute drive away from Chez Parsonage and is open to visitors all year round. This lovely village offers walks along the river where abundant trout can be seen from the narrow bridge. There are superb restaurants for a leisurely meal, an open-air swimming pool or you can hire a canoe for a peaceful view of the surrounding countryside. A tour of the Chateau is a must see.

Drive to the lovely city of Bergerac and enjoy touring the neighboring medieval towns and vineyards. And en-route to Bordeaux is the famous and picturesque medieval town of St. Emilion perched above world-famous vineyards that are Unesco listed. Taste the many wines and enjoy the outdoor cafes.

Easy day trips to Limoges, Sarlat-la-Canéda, Rocamadour, Angoulême, Bordeaux and the Atlantic coast should not be missed.

The ancient and lovely City of Bordeaux is well worth a visit. Visit Bordeaux's excellent museums, 12th century cathedrals, its wide avenues and historical buildings, coupled with restaurants and pubs for a lively nightlife. The city is central to fine wine trade, tours of chateaux and famous vineyards.

Airports in Limoge and Bergerac link you to all parts of Europe and just outside Bordeaux is the international airport at Merignac.

Train service at Angouleme and Bourdeaux provide links throughout France.

The Pyrenees in Spain are just a 4 hour drive from the cottage.

And Paris is only a 3 hour train ride away via the TGV from Angoulême.
