Vezelay, Burgundy, in heart of medieval village

Our gite is an ancient stone house at the heart of the mediaeval town of Vézelay, a centre of pilgrimage since the twelfth century and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is surrounded by superb walking country as well as being ideally placed for touring Burgundy's 'green heart', the Morvan National Park.

The house dates back to the twelfth century and still has two large cellars from that time. It was reworked in the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. From the terrace overlooking Place Borot there are views of the surrounding hillsides.

The accommodation is flexible, providing spacious living for individuals, couples, families or groups. ...Read more

Additional Location Information

Vezelay is a walled village of about 400 inhabitants, on the northern edge of the Parc National du Morvan, with its lakes and hiking trails. There are many good walks and cycle tracks in the area. Kayaking, horse riding and cycle hire are available locally. In the village there is a twelfth century basilica, an art museum and several private galleries as well as restaurants and shops. Vezelay has its own 'appelation', and the wine growing villages of Chablis, Saint Bris, Coulanges la Vineuse and Irancy are close by. The abbey of Fontenay and the source of the Seine, as well as a number of chateaux are easily accessible. The mediaeval market town of Avallon is about 20km away.
