The pictures on the website did not do justice to the house. We arrived after dark and it took us some back-and-forth driving to find it. But the next morning we woke up to find ourselves in an amazingly beautiful house surrounded by a heavenly garden setting. Everyone, including my two young kids, wanted to stay at the house instead of going to the volcano :) Everything is so nicely arranged in the house. I could stare at the fern trees from the porch chair, listen to the tropical shower and birds from the dining room all day . Mark and Martha, thank you so much for maintaining such a romantic house. We really envy you :)

We were visiting the Volcano National Park and needed a place for our extended family of 5 to stay for one night. This was a perfect solution: close to the Park, fully equipped and very comfortable. We lacked for nothing. We only wished we had stayed longer. A great choice for either a short term or extended stay.

A trip to Kilauea Volcano is a must when visiting the Big Island. But you need to stay there overnight if you're coming from Kona, and a trip from Hilo could be 45 minutes. Hale aloha is a great option. The place is well-appointed; it has all of the amenities and is very stylish. It is very quiet. The tiny town of volcano is nearby, so there is access to restaurants and a store and gasoline. We rented the place on the last 2 visits to Hawaii and would not thinking of renting anywhere else in Volcano. We love this place!

Hale aloha was the perfect location from which to visit Volcano. Well-equipped with all the necessities needed to make the house comfortable to the traveler. We should have planned more time there. The gardens were lovely, and the bird watching was spectacular! Appreciated the covered parking too!

We had two nights to spend in the Hilo area, mainly to visit Mauna Kea Observatory and of course the Volcano national park. This house is litterally 5min away from the volcano allowing us to have a peek at the famous lava glow both nights we stayed there. The house is extremely well kept and we apreciated a lot the touristic infos put together by the owner. I definetly recommend !

Beautiful home with a lovely yard. Very short drive to Volcano National Park. The weather turned cold while we were there, but there were electric heaters available and we had a fire in the beautiful fireplace. Nice and cozy. Everything we needed.

Our family lives on a remote small island several hours away from Hawaii. We recently took a few days and joined the "real world" of stores and cell phones. We booked this property with a short notice and we didn't know the area at all. The owner was very helpful and accommodating to our situation. He responded very quickly to us and gave great instructions. Oh, by the way, the property was awesome! We were so comfortable here...all the amenities you would ever need an a home of your own but better! I would give this place 10 stars if I could. Defiantly stay here if you have the chance!

My husband and infant daughter stayed here while visiting Volcano National Park. It was perfect!
Lots of space, well equipped with comfy couches and a big kitchen (there's coffee tea sugar creamer, water dispenser), surrounded by beautiful foliage so that you wouldn't know that you had neighbours (it was quiet too). The bedrooms had high quality linens and blinds. Lots of towels and mini toiletries in both bathrooms. Wifi worked well and there's a stereo system with some cds to listen too - my daughter loves to dance. It was a very relaxing place to spend a few days.
Many reviews of volcano complained of the cold but we didn't think it was that bad. There are space heaters in both bedrooms and the living room, and dehumidifiers in the bedrooms. There's a bit of a chill first thing in the morning, so I'd bring a sweater and cozy socks, but everything warms up within a few hours.
Great location - off the main road, close to restaurants in Volcano village, short drive to Volcano National Park.
We went to the Safeway in Hilo just outside of the airport before driving to Volcano so we didn't have to do groceries there. We ate at the Thai restaurant which was quite good and authentic. Otherwise we cooked - more convenient with the baby, and less expensive.
We almost ate dinner at the Volcano park hotel so that we could enjoy the view. However the reviews that we read were true. The glare of the gift shop lights spoils the view in the main restaurant. You could also eat at the bar, but it was very casual and full when were were there. So we just browsed through the gift shops, and then hung out in the dark seating area between the restaurant and the bar and enjoyed the view from there. Then we drove out to the Jagger museum for a closer view.

We spent time at Hale aloha in February 2013! Beautiful and relaxing home, well appointed and decorated with love of their life in Hawaii! My husband was back and forth to the crater rim at sunset and sunrise, it was so close! We would definitely like to return to this home!Dave and Judy in Colorado

we were blown away by the place, the quality and the beauty of this house and it's surrounding garden far exceeded anything we imagined it to be. Everything is well thought out, linen and towels are beautiful, decor is tasteful but not pretentious, the house is practical but a wonderful space to relax in, it's incredible how hotels charge what they do and give you less than a quarter (and thats being generous) what you would get in this splendid vacation rental. If we ever come back to Big Island, and we are hoping we would, we will check availability at this place first!

We stayed here for 2 days and 2 nights and it was very nice and comfortable. The house was well stocked with everything we needed in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc. It was a good location for easy access to most anywhere on the south side of the island. There was just the two of us but the house could easily hold 4-6 people. It was quiet, pleasant and spacious with a beautiful yard. We really appreciated the clothes washer and dryer. The caretakers where very friendly, helpful and willing to answer any of our questions. All in all an excellent place to stay, I have no complaints or suggestions for changes.
Fabulous, warm and welcoming holiday home in Volcano

We had such an amazing holiday on The Big Island thanks in large part to the stunning accommodation at Hale aloha. Mark and Martha have done a beautiful job with the house and gardens and it really feels like a secluded oasis to come back to each day.
We traveled to Hawaii from the UK and after 15 hours traveling via la it was so lovely to arrive in such a warm and welcoming place that really felt like home right down to the cozy open fire. Everything you could need was easily locatable within the house and Mark and Martha had ensured that we knew who to contact should we have had any problems or questions during our stay however everything was perfect.
The location was Brilliant as you are 5 minutes away from the Volcano National Park, which we found fantastic for hiking, incredible views and the volcano vents themselves were like nothing we have ever seen. We also found ourselves driving round there on more than a couple of nights after a beautiful meal in Volcano Village to watch the dramatic volcano at night as being just round the corner it was really easy to do.
We found Volcano Village to be an easy central base to explore the whole island whilst also being relaxing and friendly itself. The restaurants in Volcano were all really good, and we especially enjoyed Volcanos farmers market where we got to try aunty Joyce's famous Pastries which are a must try!
Really cannot recommend enough! Thank you for an amazing holiday!
Mahalo from England!

We just had a wonderful stay at Mark and Martha's home. It is really well equipped and everything is new and clean. The fireplace is great for warming up on a cool evening. The binder of things to do, with contacts and directions was most helpful. And being 5 minutes from the park gate made it super convenient for going back and forth. Mark and Martha were very reachable by phone and email to help us plan our stay and answer little questions while we were here. Local contact aunty Joyce was also very helpful. If you are visiting the area, we would certainly recommend staying here. Trevor and Michele MacHattie and Mike and Susan Klazek. Read more

From the time we walked into the house we knew it was a "home". Quiet, well-stocked, very personal, secluded, and you could tell the owners had put a lot of thought and hard work into this rental (if you really want to call it a rental). It truly was a home away from home. Beautifully decorated, wonderful fireplace, gorgeous views of the rain-type forest greenery from the windows. The owners were very consciencious in making sure we had a contact person very close if we needed anything else (couldn't think of anything else we needed for the two weeks we stayed there). The Master Bath is to-die-for, the beds are very comfortable, the porch around the entire house was awesome to sit on in the evening and contemplate the world. Everyone needs to book this house for their stay on the "big island" of Hawai'i.
This is the comfortable & cozy house you want to go back to.

This beautifully decorated house has a brick fireplace that not only keeps you warm but adds that special feeling of home. The owners seem to have thought of everything from supplying flashlights for late night lava watching to luxury bedding and Kona coffee for breakfast! The hiking is fantastic and honestly how often do you get to hike around an active volcano. The yard has lush landscaping and lots of flowers and when you are on the 2nd floor every room allows you to see eye to eye with a wide variety of birds! Hale aloha gets my vote for best place to stay in Volcano.

Serene beyond description. Sublime, and restorative.
This is a sunny and beautiful 2 bdr. 2 bath private home, sumptuously decorated with a wood-burning fireplace. Fully furnished, linens & towels provided, fully equipped kitchen: you need only bring such foods as you wish. Cable TV & wireless internet included. Perfectly appointed for either a one-night or a week-long stay.
Spotlessly clean. Beautiful Gardens. Quiet, peaceful, restful. A pleasant one-mile walk to the Volcano General Store and 3 restaurants (Thai Thai restaurant is excellent).
You will love it. Hale aloha is a rare gem, lovingly maintained, and as close to the perfect vacation as I have experienced.

My teenage son and I were looking for a vacation rental home to be the base camp for our week long family vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii and we found it at Hale aloha. We arrived late on a rainy night to find that the caretaker, Joyce, had turned on the lights and laid a fire to welcome us. This cozy and beautifully maintained home is a quiet oasis with birdsong in the morning and a crackling fire at night. My son claimed the reading chair in the sunny window and spent many happy hours working his way through a stack of books. I had plenty of space to spread out my yoga mat on the floor of the family room. We ate leisurely breakfasts while looking out at the manicured jungle garden and then headed out on afternoon adventures to nearby Volcano National Park or took the longer drive into Hilo to see Rainbow Falls. We cooked dinner at home or enjoyed a fine meal out at one of the nearby restaurants in Volcano Village. In the evenings, we had family film night with Dvds rented from the local general store. Hale aloha became our home away from home. It was the perfect place to kick back with the comforts of home at hand. Read more
