If you do want to drive (whether for an hour's grocery store run, or a trip outside the city to Monticello or Gettysburg), consider registering online for Zipcar--a flexible alternative to a traditional rental car. There is a Zipcar onsite. Alternatively, if you are a car2go member, they also are abundant in Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan.
