About Westchester County

Westchester is in Southern New York (otherwise known as Downstate) and is bordered by Long Island and the Hudson River.

For several years, Westchester has been the center of the movie industry, providing a backdrop for many much-loved movies.

During the 20th century, Westchester went under a major transformation, which saw the development of the likes of parks and green areas which created a much more suburban feel. Despite these redevelopments, the historical aspect of the county still remains. The oldest building within Westchester is the Timothy Knapp House built around 1670.

As mentioned, Westchester has been the center of many major movies, which have included the likes of Big (1988). It’s also referenced in Friends and How I Met Your Mother. If you're a TV and movie buff, you'll definitely want to make the trip and see where some of these famous scenes have been filmed.

What to do

If you're a real history geek, you'll love the Lyndhurst mansion which is placed in a beautiful setting of river views and gardens. It was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis and is styled in a Gothic revival. There's also the Sleepy Hollow cemetery for those who like to actively seek out ghosts and spirits. Here you'll discover many famous graves and you may decide to hire a guide to make your experience more worthwhile.

As an option for the kids, why not take a trip to the famous Legoland? One of the top highlights is to see the New York skyline built entirely from Lego bricks, however there are many attractions to enjoy for a fun-filled day.

There's also options for arts enthusiasts as the county has two main theaters: the Capitol Theater and the Westchester Broadway Theater where you can view a wide range of live performances.

Top travel tips

Due to the vast scale of the county, there are plenty of public transport options to get around the county. Bus services are provided by the Bee-Line bus system which transports from Westchester to the Bronx and the MTA Bus Company runs into Midtown Manhattan. These are great options if you wish to travel internally around Westchester or to venture out to other places.

The climate within Westchester is quite humid, but it's slightly cooler than the bustling and built-up New York City. It's fairly common to experience rain and winters can be extremely cold.

Want to discover a lesser-known destination in New York? Book a vacation rental in Westchester this year. Here you'll be surrounded by beautiful scenery within proximity of NYC should you wish to travel in.
