More travel info about Westerland: If the north German coast appeals to you, consider visiting Westerland, Schleswig-Holstein, located on the Island of Sylt. It is considered Germany's northernmost town, and it has been dubbed the "Beverly Hills" of Germany because of its popularity among the wealthy. Westerland dates back to the 1460s, but it first became a seaside resort in the 1850s. Today, the town mainly thrives on tourism, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually. When planning your trip to Sylt, keep in mind that the island can only be reached by a shuttle train that carries cars and tourists across the water. Once you get to Westerland, you will find plenty to do. There is a 5-mi. long beach and a 2-mi. promenade area. You will easily find your unique spot on the beach, which features over 3,000 beach cabanas. If you can time your visit for late September, make sure to watch some of the Windsurf World Cup Sylt sporting event. Young and old alike will enjoy the Sylt Aquarium with its collection of over 150 types of fish and over 2,000 marine animals. Local historic sites include the old St. Niels village church, the Old Frisian House in Keitum, and archaeological tours of the island's megalith burial areas. The Sylt Tourism Office operates the Villa Kunterbunt, a childcare facility that offers special programming for children. Parents and kids will love this special option! After a day on the beach, you may also wish to take in a live music concert on the "shell" stage that sits right on the beach promenade. Music, stars, and the sea - what could be more perfect? If you feel you need to leave Sylt for a while, Husum and Kiel are the closest larger cities.
