Additional Location Information

The village of Woods Hole has a unique and charming personality. A center for international marine research, Woods Hole is home to several major scientific institutions. The National Marine Fisheries Service established in 1871 to study fish management and conservation, the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) founded in 1888, a center for research and education in marine biology, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) arrived in 1930, and the U.S. Geological Survey's Branch of Marine Geology followed in the 1960s. It is also a major departure point for ferries to Martha's Vineyard and it draws crowds of through-traffic in season. The WHOOSH trolley runs frequently into the Town of Falmouth. The beautiful tree-lined Shining Sea bike trail goes from Woods Hole to North Falmouth (10.7 miles) past cranberry bogs and marshlands. Water Street, the main street in town has a handful of charming waterside cafés, shops, and galleries. The Woods Hole Science Aquarium, run by NOAA, is an excellent place to visit, especially on a rainy day. There are several good beaches nearby. The majestic Nobska Light guards Nobska Beach, a long strip of white sand with a view of Martha’s Vineyard. Stony Beach is a calm golden strip that is safe for young children.
