Additional Location Information

Black Duck farm is situated in South Gippsland close to Leongatha en-route to Mirboo North, situated amongst beautiful green rolling hills. Leongatha is in the foothills of South Gippsland's Strzelecki Ranges – a lovely country town with a population around 5000. Access to the region is by car or bus from Melbourne and takes about 2 hours. Interesting surrounding towns include Foster, Fish Creek, Meenyan and Inverloch. There are also a number of scenic seaside locations within 20 to 45 minutes travel. There are many beautiful local golf courses to enjoy all within 10 to 25 minutes drive.

Black Duck Farm is the permanent private residence of Tom Daffy and Deborah Brown and was established in 2001. Black Duck is not a commercial or operational farm as such, simply a small hobby farm for the personal use of its owners. The farm incorporates 20 acres of land, much of which has been replanted with trees and forested to re-establish local wildlife and support the local environment.

The owners enjoy being sustainable where possible and this includes growing herbs, fruits and vegetables that is used to make their own local produce. This includes a range of seasonable vegetables, an expansive orchard (fruits, nuts and berries), an olive grove (eating and oil) and a vineyard (Pinot, Shiraz and Riesling). This produce is for personal use only and not available for purchase, however you are likely to be provided with some free produce to enjoy during your stay.

Around 4 acres of the property has been developed into formal gardens incorporating a Japanese and French Garden area and a number of garden sitting rooms and walks. Artworks are also located throughout the gardens. This is purely for the enjoyment of the owners, their family and personal guests. You are welcome to wander around the garden area for a short viewing if you are interested, however we request that you do not remain in these areas as it is predominantly for private use.

You may see some animals during your stay, this may include the owner’s cute little black puppy called ‘Barney’ (who does not bite, but likes to lick). Approximately 12-20 sheep roam the fenced paddocks to assist with grass management and to provide some fresh meat seasonally. If you are lucky you might sight a few baby lambs in breeding season. There is an abundance of bird life including King Parrots and Rosellas, Kookaburra’s, Hawks and Eagles and some beautiful smaller and very colourful birds including Wrens & Swallows. Local wildlife also includes Echidna’s, Wombats and the occasional Kangaroo.
