Monks Retreat is as perfect a little hide-away in the beautiful city of York as you could wish to find. We know and love York and have been to the city many times over the years but Monk's Retreat is one of the best appointed and certainly most convenient places we have every stayed in the city; it's 5 minutes gentle walk to the Minster. Then there's the property itself a beautiful stable mews type cottage in a quiet courtyard fitted out with everything a couple could need for a self catering holiday and all to the highest standard. A comfortable and cosy bedroom, a spacious bathroom, a fully fitted and fully appointed kitchen and a delightful dining space and lounge area, all fitted into such an intimate space. And the little details impress; TVs in both bedroom and living room, stereo with iPod dock, dab radio, there are CDs, Dvds and books for guests to enjoy, lots of guides & leaflets on York, even previous guests' comments on where to eat. If only some expensive hotels could be this bothered about their guests' entertainment! And, rarest of all in self-catering accommodation, Monks Retreat is immaculately clean; we felt like we were the first people ever to stay there. Definitely could have eaten our dinner off any surface in the place! Last but by no means least, we received a wonderful personal welcome from the proprietors Mary & Philip; they were actually standing outside the gate to welcome us which I don't think we've ever had anywhere before. Such a personable welcome, a tour of the cottage showing us where everything was, an introduction to the sights of York and they even arranged for us to leave in the afternoon of our final day, very much appreciated! And if that were not enough Mary & Philip had also very kindly left us some essential supplies but also an afternoon tea all set out for us to enjoy and start our weekend in style. We just can't think of anything anyone could do to improve the experience.

This was our second visit to this holiday apartment and the experience couldn't have been better. From the warm welcome when Mary and Philip helped us unload the car, to the spotlessly clean well equipped rooms it really was a great chance to reload the batteries. Despite the fantastic location, so close to all of York's brilliant attractions, it is a really peaceful location. Private secure parking at no additional charge is also a great bonus. Would thoroughly recommend for a perfect getaway.

My husband and I finally had a few days away on our own after 17 years of marriage (a mini honeymoon). The apartment is secure, incredibly clean, close to everything in York and everything had been thought of. We were greeted by Mary and Phillip, Coffee and Scone waiting for us and even a just married banner on the wall. So many thougtfull little touches. We will be staying again and have recommened this apartment to all of our friends. 5* all the way. Read more

Brilliant location, lovely comfortable apartment and best of all the welcome we received from Mary made our stay second to none !!
Mary's knowledge of where best to visit/ local amenities and hot cup of tea and tea cakes/chocolate buttons meant we hit the ground running. Staying with our 4month old we were all well serviced as both his and our needs were met by use of their cot/ linens/ offer of highchair.
I cannot praise this little gem of a place and it's owners enough. If your looking for that personal touch that makes the difference this is it !! Read more

As advertised, this lovely little one bedroom self catering apartment was only a few minutes walk from the Minster. The owners met us on arrival to show us how everything worked and had kindly left us some bread, milk and scones. The apartment was very comfortable and provided a hair dryer, iron and ironing board and kitchen utensils. A supermarket is located around the corner and great pubs and restaurants are only a 10 mins walk if you don't fancy cooking. I'd highly recommend this accomodation and York for a short break.

We stayed at Monks Retreat for a week to go to York Early Music Festival. The apartment was very convenient, just outside the city walls and easy walking distance of most venues. It was good to have our own 'space' to relax, cook, sleep when we wanted. Private parking space was a bonus, we could also store our bikes - York being very cycle-friendly. The apartment was fine for our needs, well equipped - even to goodies left for us in the fridge. The owners were especially helpful in providing a firmer mattress for us - they even helped us unload the car!

We loved the rental. This was our third trip to York so we
knew the city. We used it for a touring base. We took a one
day trip to the North York Moors and the town of Whitby. We
also did a one day trip to the Lake District ( we were there on
our honeymoon) traveling through the Yorkshire Dales. The
Dales is a drive not to be missed, but, only for experienced drivers. ( The 664)

Stayed there for a one week which was just about the right amount of time to unwind and see the attractions York has to offer. A short walk into the centre and your in the middle of everything. The apartment was clean and very well equiped. Myself and my partner were met by the owner on arrival and shown where everything was. It seemed nothing was too much trouble. Coffee on arrival with a bottle of wine on the table, and even a balloon wishing my partner happy birthday (which is why we were there)!! All round you couldn't ask for more.

We recently stayed at Monk's Retreat for a last minute weekend away. The apartment is absolutley perfect, ideally located and extremely well equipped. Philip and Mary, the owners, were more than welcoming when we arrived. I would have no hesitation in rcommending staying at Monks Retreat (I have already suggested it to friends and family) and we would always stay there on future visits to York.

An absolutely lovely apartment exactly where we needed it to be-a stones throw from the city walls and minutes away from all the sights. If you are looking for a rental, you can't beat this place. All sparkling and new, a great supermarket just round the back, carparking and the location couldn't be better in our opinion. The apartment has everything you would need and more, and if it hasn't got it-Mary and Philip will probably be able to get it for you! We stayed with our six month old daughter and it was perfect, right down to the scones and coffee on arrival from London to the little toy ducks that Mary thoughtfully put in the bathroom. Mary and Philip even dropped off a map of Yorks streets for us the day after, as we didn't have our own. I've recommended to some of my York loving friends, and I would have no hestitation to stay here again. Keep up the good work guys-it's perfect!

Our stay at Monks Retreat was great. The apartment was a marvellous base from which to explore the city and the surrounding countryside. We found the location to be excellent as it is right in the city centre and near to all the sights. When we arrived the apartment was lovely and clean and the kitchen had everything we needed for a week away. We were met on arrival and it was nice to be shown how to work such things as the heating and the water. The only small thing was that my partner smokes and he couldn't do so inside, so he had to go smoke outside.

We consider ourselves so fortunate to have found Monks Retreat (late booking via the internet) What a find - it has everything we needed and wanted to ensure a really special break in York. From the first step over the door, the whole experience you know is going to be 'right'. Mr & Mrs Nelson were so welcoming and friendly and they can be rightly proud of this exceptional little apartment.
It's location is prefect for all the sights and it's is a comforting retreat for when shopping and sight- seeing eventually prove too much.
We hope to return in the very near future and have already told friends and family that it's a marvellous place to stay.
Thank you for making an important holiday extra special.

A perfect location to explore York and beyond. We had a wonderful week in this lovely self contained accommodation which more than met our needs. Everything we needed for a relaxing break was provided and our hosts had gone to great lengths to ensure we had information on what was happening during our stay in the City of York.
Bars and eateries are abundant and within walking distance of Monks Retreat and all of the attractions within York are easily assessable. The accommodation itself was spotlessly clean and the warm welcome afforded us made our stay that little bit special. We were particularly pleased, after a fairly long journey, to be served with coffee and scones on arrival while the owners gave us an overview of our holiday apartment.
We will always try to stay in Monks Retreat anytime we visit York and would recommend that any couple should try this as an alternative to a hotel when visiting the city.
Finally we can only give a short overview of our time in York, but can honestly say that the owners of this property went above and beyond to make our stay a very memorable and happy experience.
