Description from the owner
The Petals is a comfortable and tranquil 2 bedroom villa overlooking a lush garden and surrounding paddy fields. The villa is conveniently located 5 minutes from the beaches of Unawatuna and Dalawella and a 15 minute tuk-tuk ride from Galle town. Both bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms with hot water showers. The bedrooms have four poster king size beds with mosquito nets, posh bedding, are air conditioned or fan-cooled and open up with French windows to the verandah.
There's an amazing hammock spot at the end of the garden with a light breeze from the paddy and shaded all day by the tamarind and mango trees. Also a dining table seating...Read more

LondonHeaven on Earth!
Left on 05/12/2013 for a stay in March 2013
I stayed at The Petals for 2 weeks and can't rate it highly enough with only 5stars! This place is a pure heaven on Earth. You wake up in the morning with the beautiful sounds of nature, cup of the best tea in the world, fresh papaya juice, breakfast like nowhere else from Upul the amazing chef and refreshed with freshly chopped king coconut.
If you decide not to go to the beach you can easily spend a day here around the pool or with tons of books and board games, otherwise the most beautiful beaches are only walking distance away or about £1 with tuc-tuc.
During the day you'll be looked after by Upul and Jagarth 2 amazing guys and now also friends for which no request is a problem.
The best way to explore the area is by motorbike but you have to be a very good rider since on the road no rules apply, if that's not the case the taxi's and tuc tuc's are incredibly cheap but ask the price first. By the way a stunning tea farm and factory is only 30 mins ride.
In Sri Lanka I haven't met one person who wouldn't smile back at me, truly beautiful people.
And if you like surfing, this is the place!
I'll be definitely back very soon.
Thank you Linda, Upul and Jagarth -

We spent 3 days at Petals with our boys aged 7 and 10 - a special treat at the end of a busy two week trip travelling around Sri Lanka. We will not forget our stay! It was just the perfect place to finish a wonderful trip. The house is beautiful, comfortable and decorated with great taste and attention to detail. The garden is just perfect whether you are watching the birds or the monkeys in the tree tops from the terrace or relaxing by the pool. It is wonderfully peaceful yet only 5 minutes by tuk- tuk to the beach or 15 to atmospheric Galle. And Upud and Jahgar looked after us so well, always stricking the right balance. Upud's food was the best we had in Sri Lanka. His curry is really delicious. I actually find it quite hard to think back to our stay as I would very much love to be there. The boys said that in an ideal world this is were they would like to live. I can't say I disagree. Thanks to you all at Petals!

We had two wonderful weeks in sri lanka unawatuna mall.
the petals house is fantastically located about 5 km into the jungle from the sea with a large floral garden with pool and great service and good food.
Many thanks to the two employees upool and jagar did everything they could to make our week to be as good as possible.
can highly recommend this accommodation to others.
Unfortunately, we have not the right computer when we type this, we can not put some out of all those 100's of photos we took.

After a week of touring the island, The Petals villa is the perfect place to relax and let the world go by. The villa is clean and homely, in lovely gardens and the new addition of the pool was very welcoming. The villa set within paddy fields is very well located, being a 15 min walk to the local beach or a short tuk tuk ride which was never crowded and had a good safe area to swim and close to Galle to see the fort, markets and watch the fisherman bring in their catch of the day. On site throughout was Jagath to look after the property and us. Perfect balance of being there when you needed him, and unobtrusive for the remainder. Very friendly and willing - kept us well and truly hydrated with tea and water!! Coming in everyday was Upul the cook. His food is made from natural ingredients fresh every day and is very, very good. Any initial ideas of self catering or going out to eat were abandoned as soon as we ate his first meal for us. Also very happy to show us how he makes his curries etc and willing to give us tips. At the end of our stay he gave us a big doggy bag of spices etc to bring home and try for ourselves - sure they won't taste the same! Plenty of wildlife to spot in the garden and surrounding paddy fields as well as having the 3 dogs and cat as our adopted pets for the week.
Great & interesting island and The Petals was the perfect place to end our holiday in Sri Lanka - only downside, over too quick!! -

Petals is simply beautiful! The location is just off a little side road, 10 minutes out of amazing Galle, so it feels as though you are on your own private island nestled amongst the rice paddies. We were treated so thoughtfully by Jagart and Upul, who anticipated our every need and then some - Upul made one of the best curries we had in SL, and we enjoyed a lovely seafood barbeque one night by the pool. And Jagart is such a sweet guy to have around. Linda kept in contact from London, advising us of little places to go etc. One of which is a beautiful beach - Wijaya, a 20 minutes stroll along a quiet back streets. We felt so at home, and hope one day soon to return with our family. Many thanks to Linda, her lovely Mum :) and the boys.
If you are trying to decide between staying here and somewhere in Galle, i would pick The Petals - much more relaxing, spacious, quiet, and within an easy tuk tuk ride to the restaurants and sights of Galle.

The Petals is quite simply the best place my wife & I have ever stayed in. Whilst the surrounding area, the people, the food, the culture and everything that Sri Lanka is is truly awesome, Linda & gang who work at the Petals could not have made our stay any better. Nothing was too much and it actually felt as though we were staying with friends / family opposed to a rental property. Cannot wait to return.

When can I go back again?
Such a beautiful location and impeccable (but relaxed) service. The personal chef was made the holiday and was a delight to be cooked fresh sri lankan fish curry each day.
A 5 or 10 min tuk tuk ride to one of the many beaches. There are some lovely secluded quiet places around (we went out of season).
Galle old town is not just beautiful but has some beautiful restaurants and cafes. Make sure you leave the luxury of the house and private chef to try some of these local places.
The luxury hotels around the area will let you have a day pass to use the spa and swimming pools if you want. Cocktails at sunset at the Lighthouse Hotel is a must.
Make sure you ask to go to Cogalla Lake at sunrise.
This is not a hotel, it is a private home & you really feel this when you enter. Just put your feet up and relax.
We were picked up at the hotel by the owners recommended driver. we slept in the car, but the journey didn't take too long and we were offered a beer on arrival.
We travelled before the swimming pool was built - we will have to go back to try it again. -

I stayed at the petals with my husband and my parents for 5 nights in December 2012. We had a wonderfully relaxing time. We were the first users of the swimming pool which is lovely. Upul is a great chef and he and Jagath looked after our every need. Linda was also very hospitable, even from afar! Will definately be visiting again!

LondonAn idyllic luxury hideaway
Left on 05/31/2012 for a stay in April 2012
This is a fantastic place to stay for couples or families - the service we received was of a very high standard, so high in fact it was like a honeymoon experience! Upul (the cook) and Yagath (the housekeeper) treated us like family and we were spoilt the whole time. The house is very special - set in a large plot of land with a wonderful garden and 2 large and well-appointed bedrooms. We especially loved sitting on the sofas on the terrace, eating and drinking and enjoying all the animals that seem to live around the property.
Location-wise it is great - so quiet and peaceful. We were initially a bit worried when booking it that it may be a hassle to get to the beach, but actually it was perfect. Upul would get hail us a tuk-tuk and it was only a 5 min ride to the beach, and its only a 15 min ride to Galle so if you are looking for a getaway destination away from the noise and mayhem of the town or the main coastal road this is definitely it.
What i liked most about The Petals was the fact we felt it was a home from home for the 5 days we were there, the wonderful food (sri lankan curry especially!) Upul cooked up for us, and the beautiful setting - it really did feel like our own luxury villa.
The only slight downside would be there is no pool at the time of writing - but Linda and the boys mention this is a plan for the near-future! -

Service-perfect, Home- cosy, beautiful, clean, tasteful,"Home away from home". The location is in a peaceful location(2k's from beach), which we prefered. Privacy and quiet. Also very secure. Beautiful garden.
Upuls cooking was superb! Jagart and Upul are very genuine people. They truly care about your wellbeing and happiness. Dont change! We loved the property and thanks to Linda for offering this small luxury in Paradise.

Left on 08/15/2011 for a stay in July 2011
The best family holiday ever! This sums up my family's Sri Lankan holiday stay at 'The Petals'.
For nervous 'first timers' like us dipping our tourist toes into the Sri Lankan experience, 'The Petals' was a home away from home.
'The Petals' is a tropical sanctuary. Its walled compound with a 'moat' of lush paddy fields provides both exclusiveness and accessibility.
'The Petals' was the place to retreat to and reflect on the day's immersion in the culture of Sri Lanka and its environment.
Linda Johansson, the owner of 'The Petals' opened her home to us.
'The Petals' team was on call all day every day if need be to feed us, transport us and maintain 'The Petals' to provide us with maximum comfort and enjoyment.
'The Petals' is a home, not a resort.
Welcome Home!

What a lovely place! We immediately felt at home in this stylishly decorated house and specially enjoyed spending our time in the lovely tropical garden. The staff impressed us with giving perfect service without us hardly noticing them being around. We often choose to cook in ourselves or order local favourites from the house chef, those evenings om the veranda are memories for life

We stayed at The Petals in 2008 when the place did not really have its own name. It was developing then into a most wonderful holiday retreat or home - a place tucked away in the country side, over looking rice fields and coconut palms, with beautifully manicured gardens and flowers, but yet close enough to the quaint old township of Galle and the more happening Unuwatuna.
Beautiful rooms, an open verandah where you can spend the whole day dreaming, a hammock and a swing, garden seating and floor seating - makes it a place with many options to laze in.
The food - truly local, truly simple - you let the guy know what you want and he is off in a jiffy to buy the produce - if you were to ask for brown country rice - he would bring it fresh from the mill next door. If you wish to cook, the kitchen is better equipped than most.
Take a walk or a bicycle ride through the village - a beautiful introduction to the beautiful people of Sri Lanka - sometimes, living in the city, I had forgotten how nice my own countryman can be.
Its a great place for a holiday - to combine time for your self and your family with some hours on the pristine beaches nearby. The Petals has recommended Tuk Tuks which are generally at your beck and call to take you from one place to another.
And if Linda is on the island, make sure you ask her to make you one of her Signature Cocktails, which keep changing with her mood.

This was the perfect place for us, it was what we had dreamt of when booking Sri Lanka. The Hotels we had stayed at we not great but Petals was such a contrast. The gardens are stunning, you can relax there or take a short 'tuk tuk' trip to the beach and Unawatuna with it's host of great restaurants and bars. Being gay friendly was a real plus for us, we could relax and unwind. The house manager took us through everything we needed to know about the area, making us feel so at home. This place is Paradise and such good value, we now have the most fabulous memories of Sri Lanka thanks to our stay at 'Petals'.

I stayed at The Petals with a couple of girlfriends and we had good fun. The house is comfortable, clean and very relaxed. The two staff were very helpful and attentive but I struggled with making myself understood at times as one of them speaks very limited English. We ended up just dealing with the manager who comes in daily with any requirements we had. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to have some peace and quiet. If you are looking to be in walking distance of the bars and beach discos in Unawatuna it's a bit to far, about a 5-8 minute tuk-tuk ride. The road is very dark at night and I would not feel comfortable walking or cycling on my own after clubbing. I'd happily stay here if I come back with my boyfriend but if I come on a girly holiday I'd probably pick somewhere in the centre.

We spent two magical weeks at The Petals and we're still savouring the experience after several years. The setting amongst the rice paddies is nothing short of idyllic and living amongst the local villages was a great way to get a slice of the real and lovely, lovely Sri Lanka. The short rickshaw ride to the beaches was always fun, but often we just hung out around the grounds. The hammocks took a real beating! So, so peaceful...

Not convinced about writing a truthful review for The Petals, Unawatuna, Sri Lanka, as doing so might narrow my chances of availability next time around.
I've been coming here for the last 5 years and it just gets better and better.
Chilled out, relaxed and simply wonderful. Away from the busy Unawatuna and Galle, you can stay here and completely unwind. However whenever you fancy beach, shopping or dancing, all surprisingly close.
The house is not big, 2 bedrooms and a kitchen, a lovely outside area shared by the 2 bedrooms overlooking the beautiful garden.
The food at Petals is great, I love the local market and thanks to Petals I now know how to make a mean curry.
The garden is amazing, lying in one of the hammocks overlooking the padi fields with a fresh mango juice (from the garden if you're there in season) need I say more? Papaya and many other fruit trees will spoil you as well during your stay.

I stayed here in Feb with my girlfriend at the quality of the house and its surroundings made Sri Lanka now my number 1 holiday destination!!
It was pure luxury, a $3 tuk tuk ride to miles of glorious beaches, and a beautiful garden for the days we didn't fancy hitting the beach.
The food was restaurant quality and the service was 5 star. I really cant fault the place and will definitely be going again.

My boyfriend and I stayed here in January of this year. It was our last week in Sri Lanka and one of the best.
The house is relaxed, spacious and absolutely gorgeous. We had the comfort of our own space with 5* treatment.
The lush garden was perfect for sunbathing while my boyfriend played badminton over the washing line!
Our days started with an amazing hot breakfast on the veranda and if not eating out we had delicious home made meals cooked for us. We even entertained a few nights while there and it was no issue to add a few extras to our table.
Will 100% revisit and would spend our whole holiday there. The beaches are a short walk or tuk tuk ride and the hotel manager was happy to help arrange transport as well as any other needs.
As much as we enjoyed our romantic stay we would consider returning with a friends.
