EXPERIENCE NOVA SCOTIA ISLAND-LIVING NEAR LUNENBURG
SkyView is a 15-year old home perched on the highest point of LaHave Island. Our house is built high like a castle on a hill. Drive your car up to the second floor door and cross a small bridge to the house. Enter and encounter a 2-story atrium with large-window views of the ocean. Other windows reveal 360-degree views of the mostly uninhabited wooded LaHave Islands, with picturesque coves, island channels, sprawling bays and the vast Atlantic Ocean.
The LaHave Islands: A Unique Destination
From the minute you approach Crescent Beach, a popular mile-long beach which l...eads from the mainland to the LaHave Islands, you know you’ve come to a special place. After driving down the wide beach (or taking the road behind it) follow a winding road and cross two bridges. Encounter postcard views along every turn -- colorful houses, old fishing wharves and fishing and pleasure boats passing by. At the end of the road you’ll find our house.
We're a 7-minute drive from the Lighthouse Route, which runs the mainland between Halifax and Yarmouth... a half-hour’s drive from Bridgewater, which is the area’s main shopping/restaurant area... a 40-minute drive from the historic seaport of Lunenburg and tourist town of Mahone Bay... and an hour-and a half's drive southwest of Halifax and the airport.
Enjoy the views from two first floor decks (one is very large), and from a second story balcony accessible from the master bedroom and another bedroom. We are perched high enough to see the lights at night of Liverpool (30 miles away). Relax. Listen to the seagulls, watch fishing boats in the bay, see deer and rabbits which roam the property, barbeque dinner, experience both sunrises and sunsets from several vantage points, and enjoy brilliant stars in black skies.
Come home from a day at the beach to warm yourself in front of an airtight soapstone wood-burning stove in the great room. Our home can sleep 8 adults in 3 bedrooms (all with skylights) and in a den with a pull-out couch (see bedroom description for types of beds). We provide bedding and towels, and a washer/dryer. The house also has baseboard electric heating with thermostats in each room.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a stove, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, food processor, and quality kitchenware. The dining room has a large mahogany table with antique chairs, and we have a separate breakfast table. The den has a 27" TV with satellite service, and a stereo with speakers wired to the atrium. We also have wireless internet and the cell service is good. We do not allow smoking of any kind inside our home.
Locally, there are many attractions. Half a dozen beaches are within a 10-minute drive, including Risser's Beach Provincial Park, which has a fine-sand beach with lifeguards, boardwalk along a back marsh, visitor’s center, a snack bar and shower facility. On the island are many quaint paths and roads to walk or bike, a marine museum, community hall, fish plant and government wharf, two churches and a cemetery. On nearby Crescent Beach, people park their cars on the beach, walk their dogs, surf, kite-board, stroll the beach at sunrise and sunset and swim in the waves.
Several fishermen and their families still live on the islands, some who will take visitors out fishing or on island tours (ask us). Locals also love to share their community's history through casual encounters along the road and at events like the Monday morning coffee hour, serving the best home-made scones and sticky buns around. The community hall also hosts guest lectures and other events.
Along the Lighthouse Route on the mainland are lots of craft and antique shops, artist studios, restaurants, museums and historical sites. Take in musical events, county fairs, farmers’ markets, art shows, ox pulls and more. For sporting activities, rent kayaks, golf at several courses, go horseback riding, and enjoy the resort at White Point Beach, where a day pass let’s you use the pools, yard games and boats. Don't miss the most famous bakery in Nova Scotia, the LaHave Bakery (15 minutes away). Sit down in its quaint dining area and enjoy an amazing breakfast or lunch!

Island retreat with breathtaking views
Left on 02/17/2014 for a stay in February 2014 | Adam
I booked this beautiful island oasis as a special last-minute suprise for my wife right after Valentine's Day and it was the most relaxing two days we've had in months! I can only imagine how magical this place would be in warmer seasons, but it was perfect for a winter escape. We certainly had more space than we needed (3 of us including our 2 month old daughter) with 3 good sized bedrooms and a den, along with 2 full washrooms with laundry facilities. The kitchen was fully equipped, with modern appliances, very spacious, and had lots of seating space. Sitting in the atrium with a roaring fire in the soapstone wood stove, overlooking the water with wine in the evening and coffee in the morning was pretty magical as there were blizzard conditions outside and massive waves crashing in the distance . This place has such a warm and welcoming family feel to it, and we felt so lucky to spend 2 nights in this very exclusive property. The owner was in touch with us throughout our visit, answered all questions, and made sure our stay was a memorable one. Highly recommend this private and peaceful location to anyone looking for a true escape to nature with the comforts of a modern home.
Great Time- 5 Star View and accommodation

We spent two weeks at Skyview last June and we had a great experience there. The place was as advertised and the views were fabulous.. With the number of decks you can follow the sun around the place over the course of the day.
Skyview is a very quiet place but is only about 25 minutes from all the amenities that you will ever need for your stay. We used this as a base for explore the area. It's location puts much of the south east coast within an hours drive for day trip planning. The best beach around is at Crescent beach which is a few kilometers from Skyview. It stretches for a couple of kilometers. Great sand and a shallow slope. We went just before summer high season and practically had the beach to ourselves. The dog loved it.
We went by the list of local atractions that Mont supplied and we were not disappointed. We really like the bakery at LaHave River and the local winery (It is reputed to the oldest vineyard in Canada). The marine museum on the road to Skyview is also worth a visit. It provides a lot of history on the area that you are staying. It's worth an hour of your time.
The accommodations were top notch with a great kitchen. The only thing it needs is a sharper knife. We had great weather and would have liked to have done more outdoor barbequing but the BBQ was really small. A larger unit would be useful.
Mont, the owner was very attentive to any concerns. We had a small problem with the water after a power bump but it was resolved quickly with a phone call.
I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay at a higher end place in the Bridgewater area.

We went there as a family reunion with my father and mother in law. The view will drop your jaw the moment you walk in. great porch. Excellent well equipped kitchen. Each bedroom on the second floor has it's own flavor. The island itself is a photographers paradise. Great stay overall. The only thing we would have wished for is a barbecue. I think this property is perfect for a family reunion or a couple going for a romantic weekend hideaway.
The photos on the website don't do the place justice. You are advised to have a car as the nearest cafe/restaurant is a good 10-15 min drive. which is a price you have to pay if you want the peaceful feeling you get when you come here. Besides the property is great for star gazing which you would lose if it was any closer to the village.
The property was very clean and the owner very helpful in answering all the questions and the handouts left in the property were very helpful as well. Thank you very much for a great stay.

Very nice and quite place to relax. Beautiful clean house, full kitchen. The bay is visible from every corner of the house. Although, there is no excess to the bay. Overall, it's a perfect place to relax. There is not much going on around the house, so you'll have a lot of time to rest your mind.

Our family stayed in this beautiful home by the ocean in april 2013. The views themselves were spectacular! A beautiful way to wake up and flip through the paper and sip a coffee while watching the boats come and go.
The house was more than we could have expected. Big and rambling - enough for three kids to play hide and go seek for almost 2 hours. Loads of blankets, pillows etc for everyone. The wood stove was excellent and keep the house cosy! The kitchen was very well stocked with appliances in good working order. We did a lot of baking during our short stay and we were not without any needed equipment.
The owner was super responsive and we had no troubles with getting it booked and finding the house (even though it is a little bit out of the way and you might think you aren't in the right place!) - the directions were great and the set up worked well for us. We will definitely be back and will make it a longer stay next time!

Great Place for a Retreat!

The location: SkyView is an amazing place. It is located on LaHave Island, the furthest out of a cluster of little islands in the estuary of the LaHave River on Nova Scotia's famous South Shore. Accessible by car, SkyView is perched atop the highest point of these islands, so it enjoys panoramic views of Nova Scotia's austere and yet stunningly beautiful coast.
The property: The house itself is ideal for a group of 4 - 6 people, though it could easily accommodate a few more by sharing beds (e.g., children). It is modern, clean and spacious, with an open-concept kitchen and living area on the main floor, hardwood floors, expansive windows and decks all around. The wood stove in the middle makes everything cozy and warm on cool evenings. The kitchen is super-functional and well equipped, including a gas stove (a rarity in Nova Scotia) and dishwasher. The owner is meticulous with providing all information about the house, communicating well and making the financial arrangements work seamlessly.
The activities: Our party was a group of 5 female academics from a Halifax university seeking a retreat in late april at the end of a grueling year. We were happy just to hang out cooking and eating and working it off with long walks/runs across the islands and beaches (it is 13K from SkyView to the end of the beach that connects to the mainland). But for visitors wanting to take in the local sights, there is so much more to do! On the islands, there are authentic fishing villages, old graveyards and a marine museum. The first stop on the mainland should be the LaHave Bakery, the hub of the local community and source of wonderful breads and bakery. Get there early for the pizza buns and don't miss the craft shop behind the bakery. Summer visitors will be wowed by Rissers Beach Provincial Park just a few kilometers away. These are just a few of the destinations accessible and close to SkyView. We were sad to leave and we certainly intend to go again. Read more
