Old Miller Trout Farm Guest House--Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Margaree Forks house

2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 6

“Awesome fishing, relaxation - just paradise” Because she had done so well in a class project, I had promised my daughter an 'end of summer' trip to the Bell Museum in Baddeck. Friends recommended the Old Miller Trout Farm to us. I was reluctant to book because the property is not on the ocean and not in Baddeck, However we followed our friends recommendation. We quickly discovered that everything on the Island is a scenic drive from somewhere...the ocean beaches in Margaree are all within a short drive, Baddeck is close, the "Crafters Loop" on the Cabot Trail that the owners directed us to was wonderful, the show at the Barn, (also recommended by the owners), was fantastic, the meal we had at Big Intervale was superb...our only disappointment was that there were no whales seen on our Whale Watching trip out of Pleasant Bay, (no charge!). This may have been because we were there a day or so after a hurricane had largely missed the Island although it did hit Quebec and New Brunswick. We also ended up fishing for trout at the farm and our hosts even froze some for us to take home when we left! All in all a wonderful, quiet place to stay and relax but certainly close to anything one would want to go to on the island. We will return, but next time will have more time!!!

Cliff Waters Vacation Properties, Secluded

Pleasant Bay cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“Can't imagine a better accommodation for a visit to Cape Breton” From our first contact with owner, Niki Pike, regarding reservations to the moment we said goodby to Cliff Waters the experience was nothing short of sensational. Prior to our trip Niki provided us with a great overview of her beautiful part of the world including recommendations on exciting hikes, whale tours, sea kayaking, and local dining. Her advise was spot on. We knew immediately upon arriving that Cliff Waters was going to be a special place to use as a base for our week on Cape Breton Island. As we drove along the roadway approaching the cottage for the first time we noticed a pod of pilot whales feeding just off shore. Arriving just before sunset we spent the first hour of our stay sitting on the front porch watching and listening (yes the whales were that close) as the whales put on a private show just for us. The amazing sunset over the ocean that we marveled at that evening was just the first of what became a daily ritual. The cottage was everything we had hoped for. There was plenty of room in the open floor plan for my wife and I along with our daughter. The sleeping loft provides a great place for a third or fourth person. The full kitchen had everything we needed to prepare wonderful meals of local seafood. We found the cottage clean and well furnished with everything we needed for our stay. I must admit that before our visit we had some concerns about the remote location of Cliff Waters. It is in fact "off the beaten path" in a very isolated yet easily accessible area. Our concerns were unfounded. The isolation translated into privacy. With not another home in sight we felt as though we had the whole island to ourselves, yet, within a short drive along the Cabot Trail we discovered a wonderful world of natural beauty and adventure. Each evening, after a day of exploring the island, we returned to our wonderful Cliff Waters Cottage for the whale show and unforgettable sunset. Can't imagine a better vacation experience.

Eberhard's Log Cottage 1

St. Peter's cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 5

“Beauty, birds, boats and beyond! A wonderful retreat!” We stayed at the boathouse for a week and couldn't have been more pleased. Nestled on the shore of a quiet bay that links to the big lake, we were enchanted by the beautiful surroundings and absolute peace. The boathouse itself is simple and spacious, very well maintained and provided a perfect place to kick-back and enjoy. A short walk down the lovely woodland path brings you to an expansive beach where you can explore, swim, sun tan or hunt for shoreline treasures. Our only neighbours were an eagle, a beaver, a heron, a countless variety of woodland birds...and a rather nearsighted bat we nicknamed "squinty". The owner is Eberhard, a wonderful host as well as a skillful and patient kayak and canoe instructor - well suited to assist anyone from the paddling novice, to those just requiring a brush-up on their skills. The dock is overlooked by the boathouse and is the launch-point for the boats. When people rented kayaks or canoes they would briefly pass by in front of the boathouse on their way to the dock. It never felt intrusive; in fact, it was often a lighthearted social encounter with a wave hello or a "good morning" from us or them. This is a place where you can be as active or as quiet as you wish to be. We rarely left the property but when we did, we would return, step through the door and feel instantly welcomed home by the cottage. This place afforded us much needed rest and relaxation along with some amazing adventures! We would definitely stay again.

About Cape Breton Island

Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Majestic scenery, unforgettable experiences and friendly locals... What more could you want for your next vacation? Set off for Cape Breton right away – while it's still relatively unknown – and make sure you have the best trip possible by finding your vacation rental on FlipKey.

About Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Found on the north-east tip of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton is only connected to the mainland by a rock-filled causeway.

This makes it the perfect secluded spot for a week away, and there's plenty to explore while you're there.

You can see the island's history at almost every turn. You'll find evidence of the Acadians, Aboriginal and Gaelic forebears if you look hard enough – or head to one of the exciting museums on offer.

The rugged yet beautiful landscape makes this the perfect place to explore. So chuck away those maps, just wander through the forests, breath in that fresh air and let Cape Breton do the rest.

What to do in Cape Breton

The best way to see Cape Breton is to follow the Cabot driving trail. You drive along the shoreline, looking over rocky cliffs, and then right through the national park. Don't forget your camera, because this is one trip you do not want to miss!

If you fancy finding out more about the history of the area, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. Head to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site – it'll show you how the Silver Dart—one of the earliest airplanes—was created! The Cape Breton Centre for Heritage and Science is pretty good, too.

For a real step back in time visit the Fortress of Louisbourg – the largest historical reconstruction in North America. It's a bit noisy with all the military drumming, musket shots and bubbly townfolk, but it's an experience you'll never forget.

As Cape Breton's an island, it's no surprise that there's lots to do on the water. Go canoeing or kayaking, or take a boat out and go whale watching.

Top travel tips for Cape Breton

Driving is probably the best way to see the most of Cape Breton, but don't be afraid to venture out on foot.

Check out Cape Breton's events calendar and see what's going on during your stay. There's bound to be a community party or festival and they're always lots of fun.

If you're not sure where to start, head to the visitor center and ask a local for advice – they're bound to know some spots off the beaten track that will make your trip even better!

For an escape to a natural paradise, full of craggy rocks, beautiful scenery and exciting activities, no place can match Cape Breton – an often forgotten part of Nova Scotia. Start your journey there today by find your perfect rental home on FlipKey!

La Belle Brise
Perfect!

This home was perfect!!! Perfect location! Beautiful, quiet area with the mountains in one direction and the ocean in the other. We bought Lobster from the local Fisherman who dock in the tiny harbor right across from the house! The house is beautiful, immaculately clean and perfectly stocked. I can't say enough about how wonderful our stay was. And, Paula was always easily accessible for questions. Thank you so very much for such a wonderful experience. We will absolutely be back!see more
Double Room Cottage 1
FANTASTIC!!!

These beautiful log cottages were immaculately clean and cozy. They are on the Cabot trail and close to the Glenora Distillery, Red Shoe Pub, and the magnificent Atlantic Ocean as well as the Margaree River. The proprietor, Angela, was very sweet and couldn't do enough for us. I would recommend these cottages to anyone!see more

Beautiful, relaxing stay

My husband and I spent a couple days at this beautiful spot in Cape Breton while we were on our honeymoon. The apartment was beautiful and clean and nice and cozy. It felt like home. We loved having tons of space and we enjoyed sitting out on the deck enjoying the view of the lake. We will definitely be back again on our next trip!see more

Pictures do not do this house justice!

Great location-right off the Cabot Trail, grocery store and beach within walking distance. Russell contacted me prior to our arrival to see if we needed anything and to give us ideas on local things to do. Germaine, the woman who takes care of the house, checked in on us a couple of times. The neighbors were super friendly-1, a fisherman, brought over the catch of the day and another brought over tools to help when 1 of our bikes had trouble. There were 7 of us traveling on 5 motorcycles and there was plenty of parking. We all loved the house. Quiet and beautiful surrounding. We can't wait to go back. Thank you Russell for your hospitality.see more
Charming Cape Breton Artist Retreat
A unique place to just get away and relax

We were looking for a place to bring our 2 small dogs and happened to see this house..so glad we did. It is quite unique. Imagine waking up every morning and hearing the loons on the lake and watching the sun glisten on the water as the fog lifts from the hills beyond. It may seem remote to some, but we didn't find it that way. The house itself is unique..it's kept very clean but it was so comfortable. One definitely could tell it is owned and decorated by an artist. The spiral staircase was pretty cool. Being a bit larger I was leery at first as to the sturdiness of it but had no problem going up and down. The beds upstairs were comfortable and there's a bathroom on both floors. There was a deck outside overlooking the lake and a really nice yard. The owner, Ken, stayed in his studio on the property. He was there if we needed him but was by no means intrusive. We enjoyed having conversations with him when we saw him. This was a great place to just kick back and relax. There's wifi for anyone that needs to stay connected. Would we stay here again ? Definitely yes. see more
Eberhard's Log Cottage 1
Wonderful, quiet ,comfortable cabins with a spectacular view.

Hi : We rented our cabin for two months. Boathouse cabin during July and log cabin during August. Both cabins are comfortable and have a view of the water. No TV or internet but we did not miss either. A short 15 minute ride for shopping or connecting to the internet.. St Peters is a small town that offers ocean views and hiking. Information center offers plenty of info on what is happening in the area. People are very friendly and helpful.see more
