At the end of a small lane and overlooking the beautiful River Mira, lies Casa Boakoster. Having been uninhabited for the past 25 years, the house has been lovingly restored by professional carpenter Bas Koster, who has transformed this once-derelict property into a beautiful, charming villa that blends traditional Portuguese architecture with clean interior woodworking, a product of his carpentry experience in the Swiss Alps.
Not satisfied with rebuilding the roof and the first floor, Bas has completed the house by building a large wooden sun terrace that extends out from the ground floor and provides fantastic views over the river, a... stone’s throw from the house. The terrace is the perfect place to sunbathe, BBQ and enjoy a glass of tinto and the proximity to the river means that the terrace always catches a little breeze which prevents it from getting too hot, even in the height of summer.
Entering the house from the terrace, large double-doors lead into an open-plan living space, with kitchen, dining table and seating area, a good place to read, write and nap A hand-made wooden staircase leads up to the first floor and into the master bedroom which occupies almost the entire floor space, the rest taken up by the bathroom with its large shower, wash basin and WC. Taking pride of place in the bedroom is a real comfortable king-size bed, again with unbroken views over the river and to the hills beyond. The house can comfortably sleep four people, due to the double sofa-bed on the ground floor. Linen is included and cot for a baby is provided upon request.
Guests have access to a great garden with herbs that can be picked fresh for your dishes, a hammock and 2 sitting areas, a big sun terrace with a gas operated Weber BBQ. Inside there is a kitchen with juicer, water boiler, coffee maker, oven, stove, fridge and washing machine. There are a lot of books in different languages, board games and a stereo with a connection for a mp3 player.
The house is located within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Great for strolling back after a few drinks and picking up bread at the local bakery located at the end of the street
Follow the street underneath the house to the left and you get to a little chocolate factory.
Directly underneath the house starts a lovely board walk along the river.

How to get there
Odemira is served by regional bus service connecting it to other towns in the region and beyond. There is also a daily bus service connecting it with Lisbon. The bus station is a short walk from the house. From the nearby town of Funchera (30 min van Odemira), trains leave for Lisbon and Faro a few times a day, but getting a rental car is by far the best option so you can truly explore the area and get the most out of your stay in Alentejo. There is free parking 40 meters from the house.
From Lisbon Airport - 203km / 2h 30 min
From Faro Airport - 154km / 2h
Odemira is located in the province of Alentejo, an area that is in stark contrast to the tourism-driven developments of the Algarve. In Odemira the pace of life is slow; the quiet cobbled streets, orange-blossom scented squares and weathered houses giving the town a distinctly timeless atmosphere. Here you can get espresso for under €1, eat the legendary frango (grilled chicken) and sample the local wines , and find some fantastic bargains in the weird and wonderful little shops that are dotted throughout the town.
Returning to the river, there is a lovely tree-lined boardwalk along the southern bank, with small jetties and benches at various points to seek shade form the midday sun, or just watch the fisherman lazily casting out into the green waters, which are some of the cleanest in Europe. The boardwalk is one example of the recent improvements to the town that confirm its status as the region’s main hub. As such, the town has several bank branches and a post office, as well as the following amenities:
- Cinema (films are usually in English);
- Hospital, very close to the house;
- 24 hour Pharmacy;
- Supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi and Intermarche);
- Indoor swimming pool;
- Numerous restaurants and cafés;
- Various squares and parks including one directly next to the house with play equipment for the kids; Bakery (50m from the house) with a phone booth located outside.

"After a few days at the beach in the algarve, Casa Boakoster was a taste of 'real' Portugal. The balcony offers the ideal location to enjoy a sundowner - without a doubt is the best location in the beautiful town of Odemira. Having explored many areas in Portugal, this is a firm favourite with plenty of things to see and do in the region. Can't wait to visit again in the future.."

Highly recommended! I had an amazing few days at Bastian's villa. The house is absolutely classic and charming, but he kept it simple enough to still feel modern and clean. He clearly has an eye for functionality and design. I was far more than comfortable, I was able to relax by the garden, or curl up on the couch with a view out of the large glass doors. Odemira is a charming town, and I enjoyed walking through the cobble stoned streets, meeting his friendly neighbors, as well as jogging through the countryside. The view over the river is gorgeous, and I spent evenings on the deck with the sun setting over it, watching the goats traverse corn fields and families of ducks paddle by. Bastian was able to direct me to some really nice beaches, which I drove to for quick dips and afternoon naps. There is also some beautiful hiking throughout the area. I will certainly return again, and my mother has already booked a bird watching get away with friends as well! My stay was both peaceful and fun. Perfect for families, girl trips, or romantic getaways. You have to check it out!!
