The historic Washington Melson House is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom vacation cottage that is a short walk from all museums, parks, restaurants, churches and shops in St. Michaels.

The house was built around 1840 by Washington Melson, a sailor, believed to be one of two individuals in Talbot County who voted for Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election of 1860. The house was originally built at only 16 feet wide but enlarged to the current width soon thereafter.

The first floor of the original portion of the Melson House includes a LIVING ROOM and a DINING ROOM. On the first floor of the REAR WING is a KITCHEN area which opens up b...Read more

Quiet, comfortable, spacious enough, and old-style

Left on 02/05/2013 for a stay in January 2013

After a snaffu from the renter, the W. Melson wasn't available. The renter also owns the house next door, a (very similar) 1850 sailor's house called Blades' house, so he offered that one to us instead. Because it was all so last minute, we weren't sure if we were jerked around, or if this was legit, or what... It felt somewhat uncomfortable at first... Turns out, we accepted the renter's switch, and Blade's house was great!! I do recommend it. So, if this happens to you too, the owner is trustworthy. The location is great, of course, on a tranquil side street leading to the harbor, park, and main street in no time at all. Beautiful. We really enjoyed the decor, especially the antique-looking fixtures. The house was clean, eventhough our renting it was so last minute (due to our house switch): kitchen, baths, and linen were clean. We truly appreciated that. Beds were very comfortable (even with my bad back) which made our stay very relaxing. Cable TV had limited choices, but it was totally OK with us: We brought and watched Dvds (there is a DVD player which is not listed in the amenities). Wifi worked great. It was January, so we also enjoyed the fireplace a lot!! I would only make a couple of suggestions to the owner: a) the dishwasher is wobbly, it needs to be anchored (It worked fine for us, though, no problem) b) Bathroom faucets are wobbly, they need to be tightened up (not a problem for our use) c) the kitchen could use a few more spoons, etc, as our hungry family of 4 kept running out of silverware... :) But if you tend to eat out a lot, that should not be a problem for you... Other than that, our stay at the Blades house was thoroughly enjoyed by all, young and old. We appreciated and used the (clean) microwave, oven, fridge, dishwasher, washer/dryer, TV, DVD, Wifi, fireplace, etc... All was in order, and made for a great happy-family get-away weekend.

      Wonderful weekend get away!

Left on 01/09/2013 for a stay in September 2012

We stayed at the Melson House in September, 2012 with another couple. The house is absolutely lovely and comfortable. It is in an excellent location within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, the grocery store and the museum. We didn't use the car all weekend. The weather was gorgeous and we enjoyed sitting on the patio. The only suggestions I have is to put a light at the entrance to the front bedroom and the kitchen could use more cooking supplies. Overall, a wonderful weekend at the Melson House.

      Cozy

Left on 10/25/2012 for a stay in October 2012

Actuall we stayed next door. Our host Tom, graciously moved us over one house, after a small calendar misfire. The house was warm, comfortable and had a nice kitchen.
Being able to walk everywhere in St. Michaels made our short visit so much richer.

      Crabtastic Great Escape

Left on 08/26/2011 for a stay in August 2011

This cottage is the perfect great escape. Conveniently located in the middle of quaint St Michael's close to the harbor, restaurants, and shops. The property is clean and well-maintained with beautiful landscaping. The building has been lovingly restored keeping to the historical accuracy, yet well placed modern conveniences make the stay even more enjoyable.

I have visited this cottage several times and will continue to do so! A great place to gather with family and friends or a quick weekend escape to enjoy life on the shore.
