Hideaway in the heart of Ubud
It takes a steep walk up a hill to get to Murni's Houses, but once you're there, you won't believe that you're just a few meters away from the bustling town center of Ubud. The compound composed of discrete and discreet houses is beautifully landscaped with a distinctly Balinese aesthetic, following the natural contour of the land. It's peaceful and quiet, and the river gurgles nearby, unseen. The gardens are lush and pleasing to the senses, and cool the atmosphere down in the evenings, making airconditioning in the rooms unnecessary. The houses themselves are cozy and designed with comfort in mind. One forgets that one is staying in a hotel. Our room had a full bookshelf and unique pieces of art, that made it feel like a home and not an anonymous hotel room. The houses also flow naturally into the gardens, and one feels like one is living in a secluded wooded area. The staff does its work quietly and invisibly, and there is a strong sense of security and privacy. Breakfast was generous and delicious, and the presence of a spa on the premises was definitely a plus.

It's great that you liked The Bungalow so much - as well as the gardens - and Tamarind Spa at Murni's Houses. We are lucky to be so quiet and yet so near the centre of Ubud. Glad you liked the breakfasts too. I hope you can return. Murni

We had the most memorable stay at Murni's Houses in Ubud, Bali. Both my husband and I immediately felt welcomed and relaxed. Judging by the serene surroundings, you would never know that you are at a walking distance to amazing shops, markets and restaurants. Additionally, after a day strolling the city, we had a balinese massage at their spa, it was absolutely wonderful. Later in the evening we dined at Murni's Wurung (restaurant), where besides having the most heavenly smoked duck, we enjoyed a display of museum like balinese antiquities. Thanks a million Murni and Jonathan for your outstanding personal attention to detail. Highly recommended.

I'm delighted that you had a wonderful time at Murni's Houses - and of course that you enjoyed the Tamarind Spa and the smoked duck at Murni's Warung. I hope that you can come back. Murni
Magical hideaway in the town of Ubud
Lovely, friendly accomdations within easy walking distance to all of Ubud. Murni and her staff could not have been more accomodating and friendly. We ate at the nearby restaurant twice.
Response from Murni - 02/28/2013
Thank you for writing. I'm glad that you enjoyed the magical hideaway. And thank you for eating in my restaurant. I hope that you can come back. Murni
They make you feel like family.
Murni and her staff are a lovely crew, friendly, open and very helpful. The grounds of her houses are beautifully scaped and peaceful. Breakfast can be taken on the lovely veranda overlooking the lovely intimate garden and fountains. The spa is across the garden and has a beautiful setting facing the main veranda. Murni has a life long knowledge of Bali and she is an incredibly gracious and friendly spirit.

It was a pleasure having you stay with us. Thank you - and thank you for the photos. I hope that you can come back soon. Murni
Serene escape right in the heart of Ubud
Murni's Bungalow lived up to its reputation - it's interior felt very Balinese to a couple of first-timers to Bali, but tastefully so, with its individual sculptures, carvings, furnishings creating a comfortable little nest, . Murni herself apologised for the building noise that went on during the day as a new villa was under construction during our stay - it would only have been a bother if we planned to sleep during the day - not for us. We wanted to get out and about in the main streets of Ubud which was only a short stroll from the gated retreat. The houses are far enough away from the hustle and bustle but close enough for you easily wander off and have a drink and some food at the abundant cafes/restaurants splashed around. Murni's Houses also accommodate the recently opened Tamarind Spa - which was our first indulgence on day two. A short one minute stroll from our Bungalow and you are greeted by the ever friendly staff who will make you a juice, smotthy, food from a very reaonably priced and tempting Balinese menu.
Jonathan the wonderful email contact in aus, answered every question with ease and timeliness, he organised our airport transfers and we were met at the airport without any concerns by our friendly driver.
Not having much experience to compare other accommodation in Bali - but having travelled in other countries I would certainly return to Murni's for the comfort, simple style and extremely affordable prices. We certainly felt very relaxed, safe and looked after by everyone we came across.

very well-thought, lovely place, convenient location off of jalan raya but provides haven from Ubud hustle and bustle. for anyone who loves art, this is a very special experience staying amongst Murni's unique collection

Thank you for your review. I'm happy that it was a very special experience for you and hope that you can return. Thank you for staying. Murni
Loved that I could hear the river.
As it happened I stayed in The Suite, The Room and The Bungalow. All had their own really nice individual decor, view of the beautiful gardens and privacy. From the balcony of the bungalow you can see across to the other side of the river and hear the river flowing below. The Bungalow also has a great garden bathroom. The staff at Murni's are like a family. I felt well looked after. The hot stone massage at the spa is amazing. Thankyou to the lovely ani who was also my massage teacher. Murni's is well located for shopping, rice fields walk, Murni's Warung and more, as well as being away from the traffic when you need peace and quiet. I could have stayed at cheaper places as I was traveling alone but wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
Response from Murni - 08/11/2012
I'm very pleased that you enjoyed all the accommodations you stayed in in Murni's Houses and that the staff treated you like family. We're looking forward to seeing you again.
Best spot in Ubud
We loved all the little trinkets and special touches at Murni's. It has such a homely feel. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and the bungalow was well appointed with a comfortable bed and lovely furniture. We enjoyed having breakfast overlooking the tranquil gardens. Next time I will stay a bit longer as I enjoyed it so much! The spa is not to be missed!
Response from Murni - 07/26/2012
You are very welcome to stay longer next time! I'm delighted that you enjoyed it so much - including the Spa! Murni
Peberton Western Australia
We absolutely loved the bungalowe at Murnis. It was spacious, simple in the nicest way and filled with interesting art and furniture. It was very private and looked onto natural forest. We often felt like we were the only visitors at the complex. we liked the traditional setting at Murnis and the staff were so helpful and obliging. we had a great choice for breakfast which included lovely fresh fruit each day. we chose to eat the Indonesian breakfast as we find that western style breakfasts are not as good. The staff were happy to bring pots of tea or breakfast to our verandah. It was only a 5 to 10 minute walk into the centre of Ubud and the dancing was just past the accomodation. The hill up to Murnis is quite steep but we enjoyed the exercise. There are plenty of gorgeous eating places within 5 minutes like miros garden rest, delicious nasi campur and of course Murnis warung which has the art, antique section attached. The prices of the accomodation are great!. We had no television or phone, which we preferred and any problems with wifi access were attended to quickly. The only drawback for some people might be the lack of a pool, but we did not mind, possibly in the really hot weather we may have noticed. The spa in the complex is relaxing, friendly and of a high level of services provided. we could not fault anything about Murnis accomodation and will certainly be back!

I am very happy that you loved your time in the Bungalow so much and that everything was so good. It is great when somebody enjoys themselves like that. We're looking forward to your next visit. Murni
Hidden gem in Ubud
The Bungalow at Murni's Houses, is just the accomodation we would like to stay in, for the next years, whenever as we have planned so far, we want stay for at least a month in Ubud, Bali.
It is very private, but easily accessible from the center of Ubud, just 10 minutes away. It is tastefully furnished, with a terrace that has a beautiful view.
The staff is wonderfully helpful and friendly.
Every problem we had, like a loud ventilator, was immediately solved.
Murni, we are coming again next year!!!
Response from Murni - 07/07/2012
I'm delighted that you liked The Bungalow so much and thank you for staying for over a month. You are very welcome to come back and stay next year.
Murni's is wonderful!
Our second stay at Murni's Houses was May, 2012 and it was lovely. We have stayed in the Bungalow both times and love it's seclusion and peaceful setting. Breakfasts are great and the new tamarind Spa is exceptional with very capable and friendly attendants.
Response from Murni - 06/02/2012
Thank you for a wonderful review - I'm very happy that you came back and that the spa is exceptional. Good to hear that the breakfasts are great too. Thank you for staying with us.
I was only able to stay at Murni's my final two days in Ubud. I wish I had planned to stay longer. The huge bungalow I had (all to myself) was private, clean, and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and Murni even joined be for breakfast my first morning there! Breakfast is included and the food is excellent. I loved having a spa right on site and you can book any treatment imaginable. I was a little worried about not having air condition but it cools down at night and the vegetation seems to keep the place cooler also. I actually needed a blanket and I'm generally a very warm person. The location of this place is also perfect. It's in a peaceful, private spot yet you can walk three minutes and be in the middle of shopping and restaurants. The staff at Murni's went out of their way to accommodate me! I will definitely be staying at Murni's longer next time!
Response from Murni - 05/25/2012
Thank you for the wonderful review. I'm very happy that you enjoyed the spa, the food, the staff and the convenience and that you'll becoming back. Hope to see you soon.
the attractive for me to come back again...
Besides Murni's house, I have experienced resort and Villa in another place in Bali, but the 3 days living in Murni's house is the most fantastic impression overall my trip, the natural environment and everything in/outside the room is so unique along with the great room service that make you feel like you are in heaven, very quiet but also very convenient for shopping, eating to the downtown of Ubud and etc...
Only four suites there that make you feel you are the host of the area with great service, the staff working there is so nice with smile always to make you feel like living with one big family
Everything I experienced in Murni's house is still in my mind till now since we came back from Bali, Missing the environment, missing the service there.. missing Murni... the classic local architecture style facility
Response from Murni - 04/26/2012
Thank you for such a great review. I'm delighted that you, your uncle and daughter had such a good time with us and that it was the most fantastic part of your trip. We're looking forward to you coming back with your wife. I hope that she passed her exams in Shanghai..
Lovely and Bali-esque
Murni's is a lovely, very Bali-esque place to stay while you're in Ubud. It is extremely well-located, in the center of town but up and away from the traffic and noise. This is not a fancy hotel with a swimming pool; go elsewhere, if that's what you seek. This is nice rustic and very much in keeping with the real Bali. Staff is wonderful, rooms are nice, and the Spa is terrific! Get them to pick you up at the ariport, as this is a wonderful service and reasonably priced! Also, they are very helpful at booking and recommending tours, etc. Only caveat would be if you're hyper-sensitive to heat and humidity. Rooms are not air conditioned, but do have fans. Other than that (for those who have a hard time acclimatizing), this is a great place to stay and a terrific value for the money!
Response from Murni - 04/18/2012
Thank you for such a wonderful review. I'm happy that you liked the location, staff, rooms, transport and the Spa is terrific. And also, most importantly, that it's reasonably priced and great value for money. We're looking forward to seeing you again.
Murni,s Bungalow,s are so Charming with the true feeling of Bali and Ubud. Murni herself is an avid collector of beautiful Balinese artifacts. She has an exceptional eye and it is reflected in every aspect of the homes and gardens. I felt so at home and not having been back for some years it was truly like coming home being there. The staff, spa food etc. everything was just perfect not to ,mention you can walk to everything from there, yet it is so quiet and peaceful.
Response from Murni - 04/17/2012
Thank you very much for a glowing review. I was very happy to spend Balinese New Year with you and Jean. It was good. I'm delighted that you liked the place so much and the gardens as well as the spa. We are extremely lucky in bustling Ubud to be so central and yet so quiet. I hope that you can come back soon.
would always come again

Warm welcome in Ubud.
After meeting the owners last year in Laos, I felt I was made very welcome in their beautiful "home" with guests sharing their lives. Murni is a legend in Ubud and her knowledge of the area is amazing. Jonathan shares my photographic
hobby, so we went out several times with our cameras.
The bungalow is very well furnished. The bathroom is amazing. You feel the animals can come any time, but thanks to the screen, they cannot.
I stayed 11 nights in Murni's houses and would have loved to stay longer.
The garden is so very special and the spa is top of the range.
Response from Murni - 03/04/2012
Thank you very much for such a glowing review. It was great seeing you again. I'm delighted that you liked the Bungalow and the Balinese garden bathroom as well as the garden itself. I'm also happy that you enjoyed your many times in the spa. Thank you for sending the wonderful photos of your time with us. .Looking forward to seeing you on your next trip.

Simplicity & nature
A great and super relaxing experience. Murni's Bungalows in Ubud is a hidden treasure disguised within all the hip and sheik outlets of Ubud. If your seeking a tranquil and simple authentic stay in Bali, this is it. The Bungalow has an outdoor shower, a patio overlooking the Bali hillside within the rain forest. No noise, cars or horns. All you hear is the early morning rain drops and the rhythmic sounds of nature from the nearby forest. The gardens on the grounds are beautiful and serene. Murni, Jonathan and the staff are the nicest people you will meet. We were sad to leave. We will be back again for sure, no doubts. If you get a chance, go to Murni's Warong. The food is simple & fantastic, check out the lounge downstairs and have a drink before dinner. The small shop on the grounds has good jewelry and Balinese trinkets.
Response from Murni - 03/06/2012
Thank you very much for the warm and detailed review. I was happy to meet you both and am very pleased that you liked not only Murni's Houses and the gardens but also the shop and restaurant as well. I also hope that you can return.

A secluded corner of a lush, peaceful and hospitable guesthouse.
We very much enjoyed Murni's Bungalow. It was a cool and comfortable little building all to ourselves, set in the gorgeous gardens of Murni's Houses. Lovely long breakfasts. Moss covered statues and waterfountains. Fruit laden trees. Antique furnishings. Friendly staff (and we were lucky enough to meet the lovely Murni herself). We were there in the wet season which added to the wonder and romance, looking out to the dripping foliage from comfortable luxurious verandas. It's also worth mentioning the Murni's restaurant down the road is amongst the best we found in Ubud (a town of spectacular rstaurants), similarly furnished and designed. Accomodation and restaurant cost a bit more than the average but well worth it for the memories.
Response from Murni - 12/26/2011
Thank you very much for staying with us and for writing such a glowing review. I'm very happy that you enjoyed your time with us at Murni's Houses - and also that you liked Murni's Warung. It was a pleasure meeting you too. I hope that you can come back soon.
Calming and comfortable.
My wife and I recently stayed 3 nights in the "Bungalow" at Murni's Houses in Ubud, and we really enjoyed our time there. The location is good because its close to many things (shopping, good restaurants, etc.) yet away from the busy main street. Within a 5 minute walk you'll be at the Ubud market and the town - so everything is easily accessible.
As for the accommodation, there was no a/C in the bungalow, but this didn't seem to matter. With the fan on and open windows (fitted with screens to keep out the mosquitos) the room was quite cool. The bed was slightly uncomfortable for me, but my wife didn't seem to have any problems with it. It is so peaceful here ... you wake up to the sound of birds and the water flowing.
If you're looking for 5-star luxury, this probably isn't the place for you. But if you're looking for a place you'll feel at home, that's peaceful and charming, then Murni's Houses might be just what you're looking for.

Thank you for your review. I'm happy that you had a good time at Murni's Houses and that it was calming and peaceful. We are indeed lucky to be so close and convenient to everything but still in a quiet location where you can hear the birds and water flowing. I hope that you'll be able to come back soon to your other home.
My week at Murni's Bungalow
My sister and I stayed for a week at Murni's House in the Bungalow in early October. The Bungalow is on the lower level from the rest of the houses and it very private. We were so happy with our acommodation which suited us beautifully. It was such a joy to sit out on the deck and be in the middle of the rainforest leading down to the river gorge. The only problem was that we had to go up to the upper level to get the free wireless connection but I believe that has been restified. The staff at the houses and the spa were so friendly and engaging. We'll be back next year for sure
Response from Murni - 11/21/2011
Thank you very much for your review and I'm delighted that you had a good time and liked the staff and that you enjoyed the view of the rainforest leading down to the gorge. It's a great spot. I can confirm that the problem you were having with the wifi has indeed been fixed. It will be good to welcome you back next year - see you soon.

Wonderful Location / Spacious accomodations
I stayed in Ubud @ Murni's for two short nights, and I wish it had been longer! The breakfast was excellent and the bungalow was huge, easily able to sleep 4 people and I was travelling solo. Located at the edge of the property overlooking the jungle, it was quiet and private. It has a wonderful little terrace you can sit on with a book or have your breakfast delivered there. The staff was very friendly and helpful, arranging for drivers, and even tours if you were so inclined. I didnt get to try out the massage but hope to next time. the location is awesome. A few steps to the temples, palace and less than a 10 minute walk to Monkey Forrest along shop lined streets and awesome resturants. Murni's had a wonderful local feel with all the comforts of a hotel and I felt apart of the culture for the few days I was there. I met Murni herself who was very kind. My only complaint was I couldn't stay longer. If you're after local charm I'd suggest staying here, as well as in Ubud, over some of the more popular beach destinations like Kuta or Seminyak. I spent the remainder of my trip there and fonud it way to touristy, wishing I would have been at Murni's the whole time!
Response from Murni - 08/22/2011
Thank you very much indeed for the wonderful review. I am happy that you enjoyed the place and also hope that you can stay longer next time.
Luckily you are not very far away.
Real people with art in their blood
Stayed just three nights in the Bungalow with my wife. Fantastic atmosphere and very tastefully decorated. Felt like a step back in time with ceiling fans for cooling and books for entertainment. There was a strong (free) wifi signal although connection a bit slow. A really gentle and relaxing experience - not a five star hotel with everything laid on - but that's not what we were looking for. This is somewhere to go if you want a quiet hideway - full of gentle activity - new spa is right next door - and just a hop skip and a jump (10 mins walk) from the main Ubud intersection
Response from Murni - 08/19/2011
Dear Steve and Walsa
Thank you very much indeed for the review of The Bungalow. It's great to hear that you enjoyed it and thank you for spreading the word.
Hoping to see you back in the near future.

I'm absolutely sold on Murni's
This trip was either my fifth or sixth stay at Murni's Houses starting back in the 1990's. The setting is gorgeous...easy walk to the town but located above the main road (Jalan Raya) so that one does not hear traffic at all -- just geckos and roosters! The bungalow is two full rooms, furnished in Balinese antiques, very reasonably priced and comes with a full breakfast. To add to the visitor's enjoyment, the staff is delightful: responsive, very pleasant, flexible, all that a visitor might want. I have recommended Murni's to various friends and they all have loved their experience there.
Response from Murni - 08/18/2011
Thank you very much for a wonderful review and endorsement - and thank you also for the numerous guests you have sent us over the years. I know that you would not do this unless you were very happy yourself with what we provide.
I'm hoping to see you and Linda in October. The Bungalow is waiting for you.
Very best wishes from Ubud,
The Way We Were
I first went to Bali in 1990 and was immediately taken by the relaxed pace of Ubud where i spent most of my time.At that time it was possible to ride a bike down the amin streeet and not expect to be run over by a tour bus of taxi.
On my most recent visit a couple of weeks ago I was disappointed to see the state the town was in.Sidewalks full of broken pavement blocks and broken drainage covers, traffic as bad as Denpasar,
mini marts and a Starbucks, loud music until the early hours of the morning.
I was about to give up hope of finding the old Bali until I entered the the peaceful compound of Murn's Houses conveniently located a bit above the hustle and bustle of the street below. The bingalow I was in was spotlessly clean, quiet and a throwback to the days of Walter Spies.A lovely verandah to read on,a garden full of tropical plants,a very attentive staff and
a good choice of breakfast items.alomg with other meals. A great sanctuary.
In addition to the bungalow,I stayed at Muris Villas which are located about 20 minutes drive north of Ubud on an estate she has developed over the past ten years.
Very elegant, spectacuar Balinese vieews from the villas and a lovely infinity pool that one would want to spend the day in as it is far from the maddening crowd. And a staff that is attentive without being intrusive. A very special place, indeed.
