About the size of Connecticut, Montenegro has only been an independent country since 2006. Untouched during the Yugoslav civil war of the 1990s by remaining loyal to Belgrade, once the war was over tiny Montenegro voted to divorce Serbia and go their own way.

Top travel tips for Montenegro

Beat the crowds by visiting in May when the temperature is a pleasant 56° to 72° Fahrenheit. If it is days on the beach and playing in the water you are looking for, visit in August where the daily average is 84°F.

Along the coast, try the many seafood dishes on offer and while in the mountains, stick to lamb. Avoid using large euro notes as many places don’t have change – stick with 10s and 20s and you won’t have any problems.

To get a taste of the real Montenegro, move away from the coast and visit Lake Skadar.

Very nice week in Montenegro thanks to enjoyable stay in Perast. The whole village with a lot of historical buildings is adorable. We are really happy about our choice of Rays house which is a perfect place for two families, 6 persons. The house is cute, clean, comfortable and including everything you need under vacation. We enjoyed really the patio! The location is amazing, a few minutes walk to the see where we could take a swim every morning with a wonderful view of the Mountains of Kotor bay. Very nice restaurants around and close even to a little market. We would definitely come back and even recommend to friends and everybody else who will visit Montenegro. I have been here with a family for 2 weeks and I could not suggest a better place in Budva. Sweet week

I guess there was a miscommunication as we are only two and got a large four bed open room with two bathrooms (showers). The couple that run the property are quite lovely, they gifted us with ripe grapes several times. The kitchen had all you could need to make all your meals, as we did. The terrace under the arbor of giant kiwis (not ripe yet) was very relaxing. During our stay the chairs were upgraded, big plus. Having a vehicle would be a great advantage to seeing all there is in a week. We walked everywhere. There are two markets, not to far on the upper back road, the bay front road gets you to unoccupied piers and the water currently is near 74f. There is a bus stop that is said to stop hourly at the bottom of the road up to the property, we never made a connection time. The wi-fi and TV work fine. Several English language channels. We were given a ride to the Kotor bus stop which we appreciated. … see more
