A traditional Japanese townhouse that lies in the Higashiyama area where many of Kyoto`s cultural heritage sites remain. The house is situated in an ideal location with easy access to popular sightseeing spots such as Gion, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Sanjusangen-do, Fushimi-Inari Taisha, and is just one station away from Kyoto station. This beautifully renovated property can accommodate up to 6 people.
An open, and airy entrance way will greet you as you slide open the wooden doors. From here, the natural light peeking through the latticed doors, and the warm glow from the amber-coloured light fixtures will lead you further into the Machiya.
The living space is fitted with quintessential tatami flooring found in many Japanese houses, while the kitchen features a high ceiling known as a “hibukuro” (originally served as a chimney). These features, along with the large, open space allow the living space and kitchen space to blend seamlessly into a single room where everyone can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere together.
A self-contained kitchen with all the conveniences and facilities found in a modern home, we invite you to use these facilities and more during your stay. Stop by the nearby Shoutengai (a long street lined with various markets and stores) to pick up some locally grown vegetables, and experience life as a local as you cook a delicious breakfast in the morning. You will also find a large cupboard filled with all of the essentials: pots, pans, cooking utensils, glasses, and enough dining ware and cutlery for 6 people.
Dark, wooden fixtures decorate the washroom and bath area to perfectly complement the natural greenery of the “tsuboniwa” garden seen through the window. As you soak in a relaxing bath, look out towards this point of calm and beauty, which has been artfully designed with many trees and greenery native to Japan. This property also features 2 toilet areas located on the first floor.
A set of stairs will lead up to the second floor, where you will find a western-style bedroom with 2 single size beds, and an intimate lounge area to your right. Large windows allow for the natural light to bathe the room with warmth to perfectly complement the golden and orange hues that decorate this Machiya. From the tatami-lined floors, to the antique furniture detailed with images of bamboo trees in the corner, it is the perfect place for you to reflect on your day. Although the lounge room is minimalistic in appearance, you will find it to be full of character and warmth. We invite you to have a cup of tea or coffee at the seating area as your relax after a day of sight seeing. An additional 2 futon bedding can be set in the lounge area for larger groups.
There are a number of amenities and facilities provided at this machiya that you will be free to use:
Shampoo/ Conditioner/ Body Soap & Sponge/ Toothbrush/ Razor/ Cotton Set/ Hand Soap/ Bath & Face Towel/ Green Tea, Black Tea, & Instant Coffee
Located on the corner of a商店街(a street lined with local shops), this Machiya will open you up to the locals` lives in Kyoto, a scene which is completely different to the ordered atmosphere of many tourist areas. Prepare yourself for this unique experience you cannot expect from any normal hotels or ryokan. Have a taste of the Kyoto lifestyle first hand and become part of this rich, and historical community. This property is ideal for travelers, families, friends, and couples who are looking for either a short-term or long-term accommodation....Read more

Our family of six stayed here for three nights. We arrived in the early evening, and the townhouse was very easy to find, thanks to the directions that had been sent before our trip. We were greeted by someone who was very helpful in getting us settled. The townhouse was as nice as the pictures looked, but I was a little worried about traffic noise because it is situated on a busy street. However, this didn't bother us at all, the way the floor plan is set out. The kitchen was well equipped, and the bathroom was beautiful, especially the shower room. The laptop, WiFi, and washer/dryer were all essential for us. The twin beds were very comfortable and all of the linens for the beds and futons were clean and crisp. Having a grocery store around the corner was very convenient.
Thank you for staying at Kohakuan and sharing your thoughts about your stay. We are incredibly pleased to hear that you had a comfortable stay. We hope that you will chose to stay at Kohakuan again and look forward to the day when we can welcome you back to Kyoto!

We had 2 nights in Kyoto and enjoyed this experience and comfort. Beds were welcome for mum/dad and our girls had the futons on the floor in second bedroom. Service provided was terrific and great to have laptop for access to internet/Skype. Would recomend strongly and stay again if circumstances arose!
Thank you for the comments. I’m happy to hear that you found the service and the place to your liking. I also want to mention that we also now offer free Wi-Fi for easy access to the internet, making it easier for people to use their iPhones or iPads or other electronic devices. I hope that you will have the chance to come back to Kyoto and stay at Kohakuan again.
All the best.

"Memorable snapshot of anicent Japan"

This was the first time we had visited Japan so I wanted to avoid staying at a hotel and get a "real" taste of the country. Initially, I was worried that the house wouldn't live up to the website's pictures but I'm happy to say it was actually better than I had expected.
My husband and I took the regular beds while the kids slept on the futons, which was great because the kids got to have a sort of sleepover party while we relaxed in our comfy beds, I think the pillows contained camel fur or something fancy like that which was a nice plus. We definately felt home there and probably saved a lot of money by cooking a lot of our meals. We decided to be adventureous and try a lot of different Japanese foods, some of which we had no idea what it was, let alone how to cook it!!
The person who checked us in was really helpful, which made me feel better because the only Japanese I know is konichiawa and sayonara. Not only did he make sure we were settled but he helped us arrange a couple of fun "experience Kyoto" type tours so we got to experience a traditional tea ceremony and do Japanese calligraphy. He also helped us find the supermarket and a couple of places that would be fun for the kids.
But I think my favorite memory was just walking around the neighborhood and being away from the real touristy areas. Don't get me wrong, the place is just a short bus ride to kiyomizu tera and other historic places which are fun to visit and all, but if you want to experience every day life and enjoy having privacy and some down time than I really think you'll like this place. It was a home away from home.
Thank you for your valuable feedback. I’m incredibly pleased to hear that you were able to make the most of your stay and took the opportunity to experience what everyday life in Kyoto was like, along with some of the traditional arts Japan is renowned for. There are many hidden places in Kyoto that are not mentioned in the tourist books so I would be happy to help direct you to these areas on your next visit. I hope that you have a chance to visit Kyoto and stay at Kohakuan again in the very near future!
