This is an accommodation facility that enables you to charter and stay at a whole block of “machiya,” Kyoto's traditional townhouse. It is the closest machiya accommodation to the central area of Gion, and is located in an alleyway connected to popular Gion Hanamikoji Street (where maikos and geikos can be often seen). Popular sightseeing spots include the Yasaka Shrine, with Kodaiji Temple and Kiyomizu Temple being also conveniently accessible by foot.
In the “Tokonoma,” an alcove, unique to traditional Japanese houses, you will find many unique details within the house. The ceiling is designed with a specially prepared wickerwork pattern (made of Japanese cedar), the paper sliding doors are Kyoto-style “karakami,” (exquisitely crafted paper that is decorated with woodblock prints of hollyhock), and rooms are decorated with traditional Japanese paper lighting.
This is a space where you can relax while looking out into the garden, and utilize the "horigotatsu" (a sunken kotatsu table) with which you can sit comfortably even if you are not used to the Japanese tatami-style seating. The horigotatsu is the perfect place to warm up and sit under during the winter.
There are many restaurants around Kyoto, but cooking is also possible with the fully functional kitchen at this machiya. Why not head to the local supermarket to buy some of Kyoto's locally grown ingredients and cook up a delicious meal? You will find a refrigerator, microwave, rice cooker, electric kettle, toaster, cutting board, kitchen knife, kettle, pot, pans, and enough dining ware and cutlery for 6 people.
There are 2 bathrooms located on this property. Each bathroom has been fixed with luxurious bathtubs made of the Podocarpus wood. The second floor's bathtub is a comfortable size and equipped with TV to help you have relax. There is also a smaller bathroom on the first floor. This is the perfect property for larger group of guests. The washroom has a wash basin of Shigaraki pottery, ceramic pottery made in the Shigaraki area of Shiga prefecture. Exquisitely made, small details such as this, along with careful preparation adds to the wondrous atmosphere of the Machiya.
Guests will sleep on the second floor of the property where windows are designed with not only shoji paper, but also double-glazed glass to ward off the cold winters, and provide a cool space during the hot summer. Up to 4 guests can sleep in futon bedding on the second floor, and for groups of more than 4, an additional 2 futon bedding will be set in the living room on the first floor.
When you push aside the paper sliding door, you will enter into a small and cozy, tatatami-lined den. The paper sliding doors have been designed on a slightly-colored "torinoko" Japanese paper, and using the Kyoto-style karakami of woodblock printing, they have been subtly decorated with "hyoutan" (gourd cups). A bench located right beneath the window is the perfect place for you to relax as you look out of the window, and towards the beautiful scenery of Kyoto.
Popular sightseeing spots around the house:
Kiyomizu Tample - 15 minutes on foot
Yasaka Shrine - 5 minutes on foot
Gion Hanamikoji Street - 5 minutes on foot
Gion Corner - 3 minutes on foot

My family and I absolutely fell in love with this place. We couldn't have found a better place to stay. The location is amazing. It's right by the street where all the geishas and maikos enter the tea houses so we got to see and take pictures of some of them! The place is also right by the shopping area and several famous temples. For the first 2 days we didn't even have to use the bus or train! As for the machiya itself, it was gorgeous and we really felt like we were in a traditional Japanese house. Having 2 full bathrooms on both floors was also really convenient when you are traveling with more than 2 people, especially in the mornings. Our friends who have lived in Japan for close to 10 years recommended staying at a licensed machiya and we are really happy that we took their advice! Highly recommend you stay here!
Thank you for your kind feedback and congratulations on seeing a geiko and maiko! Koyuan is incredibly close to teahouses, temples and shopping districts, so I’m glad to hear that you were able to take advantage of that and experience Japanese culture to the fullest. I hope you or your friends will come stay at Koyuan sometime soon.
