This machiya expresses the light of new hope and the evanescence found during Japan's 'Romantic Taisho Era' (1912 to 1926). A time when Japan had recently been exposed to a slightly more western lifestyle, this era ushered in the perfect balance between the traditional Japanese style combined with the vibrant and international scene of the Meiji Period. With one step inside, you will not only be immediately freed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but exposed to the wonders that could only be found during the Taisho Period.Located near Kyoto city's busiest city center, Suo-an stands to offer guests a taste of a modern "wa"-style, an undeniably distinct Japanese style with a contemporary twist. With rooms that are designed using a crimson-based colour scheme, windows covered with latticed openings, and floors lined with traditional tatami mats, guests will be transported back to a different time.
From the entrance way, guests enter the Japanese room to find a tatami floored-room with raised platforms, which is inspired by old tea ceremony rooms. Throughout the property, guests will find that the latticed-openings of the window allows for the perfect amount of natural light to trickle in, reflecting off the vermilion walls to showcase a different character of the house with each step taken. Wind down in the living room after an eventful day of sightseeing and travelling.
There are 2 toilets, 1 shower/bathtub, and 1 washroom. Another element that makes this machiya stand out from our other properties is the superb design of the bathroom. Relax in luxury as you step into the bathroom lined with cypress wood, bathe in the granite-tiled bathtub, and take in the garden's beauty through the glass-pane window.
The fully functional kitchen at Suo-an consists of a refrigerator, toaster, microwave, 1 induction heating plate, and enough cutlery and dining ware for 6 people.
This machiya can accommodate up to 6 people comfortably. On the second floor, you will find a western-style room, with 2 semi-double size beds, and a Japanese bedroom (with tatami-flooring) across the hallway to sleep 2 guests in futon bedding. The bedroom is designed with a high ceiling and built using quaint, old cross beams, allowing both the natural and interior lighting to flood the room. Should there be more than 4 guests, 2 additional futon bedding will be set in the Japanese room found on the first floor.

Great location, 10 minutes walking distance from Gion. The house was in perfect condition and the service was excellent. We were served by a gentleman who spoke perfect English, who gave us excellent recommendations for sight-seeing and helped us make reservation to a Japanese Geisha photo-shoot service.
Would stay there again in the future, strongly recommended!
Thank you for your stay at Suoan Machiya Residence Inn. We are glad to hear that you were able to make most of the time in Kyoto. It was a great pleasure welcoming you all and we look forward to hearing from you again next time! Thank you very much for your nice comments.
