This 120 year-old Kyoto machiya is located on a quiet stone-paved street, just 520 meters from World Heritage Site Nijo Castle. Many more famous historical and cultural sites can be found within walking distance.
World Heritage Site Nijo Castle once served as the residence of the Tokugawa shoguns in Kyoto, who ruled over Japan for more than 260 years. It now houses over 1,000 important cultural treasures that are a testament to the prosperity and power of the Tokugawa shogun era.
Akane-an Machiya Residence Inn lies just below the south-east side of this historic castle. Amid the concrete buildings, which show the changes that have taken place over time, this Kyoto machiya conveys a sense of history.
Situated on a stone-paved street, the reformed and regal 120 year-old machiya's white plastered walls and mushikado windows are accented with black lattice screens.
The inside of the machiya paints a picture of warmth, delicacy, and beauty that is intrinsic to the design of the building. This machiya provides a tranquil area to rest and forget about the outside world.
The stone-paved streets that are just outside the lattice screen can be seen from here.
The small light that shines through the lattice slats creates an interplay of shadow and light that is a beautiful to behold. The sunken-in counter seat is a relaxing setting to drink tea and read books or write letters during a quiet Kyoto evening.
The restored hibukuro, or high ceiling, used to function as a means of releasing the smoke and heat from the cooking furnace below. The design of the high ceiling and sturdy beam is something unique to a machiya. Now, the high ceiling serves as a way of letting in additional light from above. The kitchen also has a traditional cupboard that has been refurbished to store dishes and silverware. This kitchen comes equipped with all of the essentials: microwave, toaster, fridge, 2 induction heating plates, and enough cutlery and dining ware for 4 people.
Tsuboniwa Japanese garden :
Japanese plum, cedar, and tsukubai trees grow in the Japanese garden to offer you a quiet, peaceful area, while surrounded by green.
From here, you can gaze at the "tsuboniwa" or spot garden, which when lit up at night, offers guests an exquisite scenery to enjoy.
There is also a plasma TV, and laptop computer that guests may use during their stay. This machiya offers complimentary WiFi available throughout the house.
The high ceiling and old beam conveys the history and unique architecture of the machiya. There are both Japanese and Western bedrooms on the second floor that can accommodate up to 4 people.
The bathroom is lined with the finest Japanese Cypress wood from where visitors can take in a beautiful view of the spot garden, and enjoy the changing seasons while soaking in a bath. There are 2 toilets, 1 shower/bathtub, and 1 washroom located on the first floor.
This property also comes with a washing/dryer machine, air conditioner, humidifier, hair dryer, safety box, and bathroom amenities (shampoo, conditioner, body soap, body sponge, toothbrush, razor).
Immerse yourself in the the tradition and beauty of an authentic machiya of Kyoto. Come and stay at this beautifully restored machiya and experience what can only be found at Akane-an machiya....Read more
