Ideally located in the heart of Gion, Azuki-an is an entire traditional Japanese-style townhouse that you are able to rent out for yourself. Fitted with chic décor inspired by Japanese aesthetics, this property provides all necessities needed to make your stay comfortable. Kennin-ji Temple and Yasaka Shrine is a short 5-minute walk, while a 10-minute walk can reach the famous Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
The traditional exterior of the house has the aesthetic of “wabi-sabi” (the art of finding beauty and pathos in simplicity and imperfection). Surrounded by the history and elegance of Kyoto, this machiya blends well with the surrounding traditional townscape.
The dark brown latticework bracing the white plaster walls, and Ichimonji-gawara (straight line roof tiles) extending towards the middle of the house revitalizes the traditional design of the Kyo-machiya. In addition, numerous historical townhouses in the back alleys of the main street offer you a great opportunity to experience the local atmosphere of Kyoto.
Starting from the entranceway, you will notice that guest rooms are decorated with colorful mosaic tiles, custom-made glass pieces reminiscent of the Taisho period, which adds a hint of playfulness to the property. Please enjoy your stay in this comfortable space that exemplifies the beautiful unity of modernism and tradition.
The custom-made glass windows and doors arranged around the room allow for the natural light to filter through into the living space. The mosaic tiling of the floor, which reflects the same playfulness of the windows and doors, is a brilliant expression of traditional architecture. The room is furnished with sofas for your relaxation and radiant under floor heating will warm your feet during the cold winter season. Please relieve any travel fatigues by gazing out into the courtyard.
When you open the artisan-crafted glass door, which has a unique design that uses 13 sections of glass. There is also a small kitchen space to help make your stay in the townhouse more comfortable. Please feel free to used the IH (induction heated) stovetop, sink, cookware, dining ware and cook with locally bought ingredients. Or enjoy a relaxing time while drinking the complimentary green tea, or coffee while sampling some sweets that you purchased during your travels.
You will find a fully modern bathroom space that exudes both simplicity and the traditional "wa" style. A sleek white ceramic sink, paired with jet-black tiles creates a soothing atmosphere in the washroom. The following bath amenities are provided: razor, tooth brush, cotton, and cotton buds. Enjoy a relaxing bath in our custom-made bath tub designed with white mosaic tiles that overlooks the courtyard. Walls made of “Hinoki (Japanese cypress)” create an even softer atmosphere to heal the mind and body from your travel fatigue.
This courtyard introduces Japan's distinct four seasons while inviting light throughout the entire house, reaching even the furthest room of the townhouse. It expresses “Tsukubai” which is the natural flow of the “Chashitsu (tea-ceremony room)” to the traditional arrangement of the Chozu-bachi (washbasin), Teshoku-ishi (candlestick stone), Suimon (sluice), and Tobiishi (stepping stones), etc. Please enjoy the quintessential Japanese garden that adds beauty and atmosphere to the space.
SECOND FLOOR BEDROOM
The large wooden beam that supports the house provides an impressive sight in the bed room. A soft light emanates from the lighting fixture, the shape being reminiscent of a traditional Japanese umbrella made of Washi (Japanese paper). Notice how the ceiling slopes down towards the windows, and relish how this house faithfully recreates the feel of an age when two-story houses were prohibited by law. The room with the mahogany hard-wood floors is furnished with western-style twin beds, while you can use up to 4 sets of futon mattresses in Japanese style room adjacent.
