Response from the owner We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at our Green House Terraces as so many have done so and returned so many times to us in Penang! But to answer some of your concerns that caused you such disappointment. Yes, our houses are Heritage homes in the centre of the UNESCO listed George Town in Penang, they have been totally renovated on the inside to bring it to a standard that makes everyday living comfortable and familiar whilst restoring the facade to original as is required by the UNESCO guide lines. The whole of the little cul-de-sac has the original homes, all more or less identical, one of it's attractions as they have mostly retained their original features...this include the bars at the windows with internal timber shutters as ALL homes built at the turn of the century period had this as part of their architecture as glazing was not generally in use except amongst the mansions, same for the doors, all Chinese homes of the period had an outer door as well as an inner one as it was usual to leave the shutters on the windows and inner doors open for 'air conditioning'! We of course also have the modern day version. The inner doors have normal household dead locks as we considered the original padlocks a little too authentic!! We have a similar house ourselves with the same set-up. To alter these outer features is against the rules in the Heritage area and if you look at anything to do with the period homes in George Town, you will see that this is the case. Your other issues re. lighting, I am not sure I understand as our places have normal overhead lighting all through plus a double standing lamp over the lounge and chair in the living area and also bedside lamps in the bedrooms, if the wattage was not sufficient for you, we would have happily supplied an alternative wattage or lamp! The neighbours have been a huge plus for our guests as they are always interested in the countries our visitors come from and make a point of of saying "hello" and making friends! As for walking in George Town, Yes it's correct that it is an old city, with what is known as 5 ft ways (covered areas in front of shops)and lots of ups and downs, the 'oldness' of it is it's attraction, we have plenty of Malls for those who prefer them! The "sewers" you speak of are storm water drains! There are NO open sewers in the city! Being a tropical Island, we can have short torrential, warm downpours and without these deep run-aways, we would all flood! It is also the safest city I have EVER lived in! In all of our time living here, our guests, even our neighbours, have never had any sort of incident plus across from our street entrance is the main Penang Police Station, what can I say! The bottom line re this is yes, you do have to watch were you walk as it is not like a shopping mall and certainly not like California....That's George Towns attraction for tourists, and it's people, it's like no where else and that's what keeps people coming back. We think the photo's show all that I have written of here and we certainly hope you have better luck in the future. There are many modern condo's in Malaysia as well, more suitable if the Heritage aspect is not for you. My husband and I are very proud of our homes and the heritage of this city, and enjoy showing it off to our guests! Any questions, feel free to email us. Pat and Alan
