My stay at Strathisla was truly unforgettable. As I had a limited amount of time in Sri Lanka, I used Strathisla as my base for exploring Kandy and experiencing life on a tea estate. However, what I got instead was so much more - wonderful Sri Lankan food (the best I have eaten in Sri Lanka), relaxing tropical gardens, lazy breakfasts and afternoon siestas under the expansive verandah by the pool overlooking glorious views. The hospitality of Jko and Priya was amazing as was the wealth of travel information shared by the owner, Peter. Jko guided me through the tea estates and walks through the village, not to mention a very informative tour of the tea factory. Highly recommended for families, couples and singles.
We had a truly relaxing and incredibly enjoyable stay at Strathisla. The room was lovely, the food fantastic, the views phenomenal, and our hosts (Priya and Jaykumar) delightful. We really enjoyed the walk that Jaykumar took us on through the tea plantation. Not only was the scenery magnificent but we also had a great time meeting locals along the way. It was a lovely way to get to see a different but very real side of Sri Lanka. Priya's food was heaven - the only problem was that no other food tasted as good. Many many thanks to our fantastic hosts. I'd definitely recommend this place to others.
“A vacationer's dream in beautiful surroundings.”
This stay should not to be missed during your Sri Lanka holidays! Located in the beautiful mountains of the Knuckles (ideal for hiking), surrounded by a beautiful garden, you will find this guesthouse which is runned by a lovely and friendly family. They give you a very personal approach and the food is great. If heaven exists, you'll find it here!
“WOW !! Wonderful”
I always stay this guest house whenever I visit Matale. I feel I am staying at my own home. Priya and Jay Kumar are so nice and helpful. I have been visiting many countries and have had various experiences but this one is very special. if you re visiting central province of Sri Lanka don't forget to take experience of "Strathisla" guest house.
“Paradise in the hills”
We were very fortunate to stay here during our brief trip to Sri Lanka. The pool and veranda were perfect for relaxing and it was a great base for day trips to Kandy, Sigiriya and golden temple. Jako and his wife were excellent hosts who helped with planning. The food was the best we had in Sri Lanka. The rooms were spacious and well maintained. Our children loved the surrounding area also. We loved our stay and hope to be back again in the future.
Jitzchak alster: We stayed for 6 days and rented the whole house. The house has 4 bedrooms upstairs and a dining room and a living room downstairs (there is another bedroom off the kitchen). 3 out of the upstairs bedrooms are large and have 2-3 queen size beds each of which can also accommodate a family with children. The house is an old plantation owner house with large and high-ceilinged rooms. The house is charming and comfortable. In addition the wonder of the place is the outside. Laid out in a beautiful garden and a swimming pool it has the most wonderful view of the valley around. The couple that manage the place, Jkumar and Priya are wonderful people and attentive to the needs of the guests. The house is about 20 minutes out of Matale and can serve as a base for daytrips to Kandi in the south or Dambulla, Mineriya and Pollunawura in the north. The place is also very suitable for those who want to take a few days of the hustle and bustle of Sri Lankan towns and spend some time in the serenity of the country side. Jkumar took us on two nature hikes from the house, all the time telling us about all the trees that we encountered.
A great place to visit and to have a wee dram! Very friendly host, has good knowledge of the country and especially recommendation on surrounding areas. Rooms are generous in size, great decor in common guests' rooms. Make sure you make good use of the veranda and the pool. and last but not least, enjoy the home cooked local cuisine.
“A peaceful getaway in a stunning location with genuine hospitali”
We stayed in Strathisla guest house for four relaxing days. As a family of five we greatly enjoyed the extensive garden and peaceful location. The guest house is located in the Sri Lankan montane rain forest, with amazing views and some great wildlife on show. We enjoyed walking to the local Buddhist temple, through tea plantations and around the rain forest when we weren't enjoying the colonial style swimming pool or some of Priya's amazing food. As for the service we felt instantly welcomed by the owner, Peter who not only looked after us but also shared interesting stories of the development of his guest house as well as life in the local area. The hospitality was added to by the manager Jko and his wife Priya, who cooked some of the best food we tasted in Sri Lanka as well as escorting us on walks in the local area. This place is a perfect stop for anyone travelling Sri Lanka, wanting to see the rainforests and the plantations from a secluded setting. We would reccomemd it to anyone! Thank you so much Peter, Jko and Priya
My wife and I enjoyed our time at Strathisla immensely. The guesthouse has been lovingly restored to its former glory by its owner, Peter, and embodies all the character and charm of a Colonial house in old Ceylon. You can do as much or as little as you please, whether it be losing yourself in a good book seated in one of the scenic vistas of the garden or verandah, visits to the local village and waterfall or temples , basketball, swimming in the pool, day trips to Kandy or nearby attractions and best of all, hikes in the Knuckles mountains. We especially enjoyed the local food - delicious! The guest house is a home-away-from home and yet has all the excellent service and warm hospitality you would expect from a top-class B&B.; Not to be missed!
We stayed at Strathisla guest house for 3 idyllic days. Having spent a month travelling around Sri Lanka, we can honestly say that this was the most hospitable and magical place we came across. Our rooms were spacious and beautiful with stunning views of the garden, pool, forests and mountains. The meals were delicious and very reasonably priced. Jaykumar and Priya went out if their way to cook us delicious meals, which even our fussy teenage daughter enjoyed. There was plenty to do and see incl swimming in the pool and waterfall, visits to tea factories and a picnic in the Knuckles Range. We wished we could have stayed longer.
