““Great location with ocean views, breeze & sound - Just fantasti”

Reviewed 17 Dec 2013

We loved this spacious villa perched on the hill overlooking the coral beach and sea. My wife, brother & kids missed it soon as we left. Every day we loved the breathtaking views from the balcony and could not stop to think how lucky we were stay in Fiji at this location. We appreciated the small things that were there ready to be used like tea bags, milk, eggs, bread, washing powder & liquids etc. Clean towels, bed sheets/cover including the loo rolls! The host has been thoughtful preparing this place for guests for an easy & comfortable stay. The local care taker Ramesh who was on-call is very helpful sorting out any issues in the villa, helped us to organise island/village tours, horse riding for the kids. His advise for places to visit helped us to plan the stay. His mum's curry and roti was great and glad that we had it the first night we stayed. My daughters enjoyed playing with his daughter Dipasha & her cousin Samina. As residents from Maui Bay we used the pool facilities at Warwick & Hideaway resorts with no fees charged. Both were great! The villa has no internet service. Used local Vodafone mobile phone sim with enough voice/data limit. Mobile reception is good, no issues to connect 3G/4G service. During and after a session of rains we found a few centipedes in the bathroom & bedrooms. Ants, moths, flies were expected in a tropical country so insect killer handy. Some centipedes crawled onto cloths and luggage bags. Check cloths for bugs/crawlies in the cupboard and when repacking the luggage. We drove from Nadi international to Maui Bay. Watch out for stay dogs in the road and occasional wandering cows or horses. The hosts provided a turn by turn direction so it was easy to find the villa. The drive way leading to the villa is steep so car is essential for frequent visits. If we come to Fiji again we will stay at Totoka Kalou. Its a place for families with kids to relax and enjoy. You will certainly not be disappointed and be pleasantly surprised.

Response from the owner Ah, those centipedes! Luckily they are completely harmless; their only impact giving a dose of the "heeby jeebies." They're only around during the wet season and are just part of tropical life. The only fixes we know of are a shoe, a broom or the insect spray on standby at the house!

“Amazing break”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2013

We stayed a week in the house and then had a week in an Island resort and had the perfect break. The house has amazing views and the snorkelling out the front is special. Make sure you enjoy a curry from Ramesh and a Lovo. Also enjoyed going to the markets at Sigatoka and buying fresh produce to cook up a few dishes ourselves. We'll be back.

“Great family destination”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2013

We holidayed with our blended family and grand daughter, four adults, 2 children and an infant. Totoka Kalou was a fantastic family holiday destination. Ramesh was so amazingly accommodating, he stayed in contact almost daily to check on us and that we had what we needed, he organised for us to visit the local school and he organised the most delicious lovo for us one dinner. He had truly extended himself when we were very late getting to the house on the first night (that is a whole other story)and even leant us a phone for the duration of our stay. The house is very comfortable and the views outstanding. I wouldn't want to be there without a car though and think the steep gravel driveway is probably more suited to a four wheel drive. The pool and the club house are down the very steep long driveway and across the road but we spent quite a lot of time there - just remember to bring drinks and a picnic. Even at low tide the lagoon and the jetty were also a strong draw card for us, especially as it gave us more opportunity to chat and interact with the locals. The beauty of staying in a house rather than a resort is you get to choose which resort and facilities you might want to enjoy on any given occasion yet have the privilege of being able to interact with the locals in a much more intimate way. There is plenty of space in the house for a very large family - so much better than a small hotel room. We were able to enjoy a quiet night in when we wanted it and when we felt like being out and about there are plenty of resorts close by. The Hideaway was probably the most welcoming and the whole resort is relaxed and low key, although the staff at Naviti remembered us when we returned for our second breakfast. Overall we had an incredible and memorable holiday. Although this holiday included our large and multigenerational family I would love to return with just my husband or maybe some friends.

Response from the owner Many thanks for your review. We are very pleased to say the driveway is now concreted!

“Beautiful self contained accommodation”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2013

our party included a man in a wheelchair, the house is not only spacious and cleverly designed, it is also wheelchair accessible. The views are priceless, the fresh breeze delightful. Ramesh met us and had curry for our arrival, the rest of the time we self catered with the delectable fresh fruit and veg from Sigatoka. The lagoon is great for swimming and snorkeling, the locals are friendly and helpful. Best to have a car, as most destinations are some distance away. We spent lots of time wandering along the beach or exploring the local townships. Everything you need is in the kitchen and the DVD collection is good for winding down in the evenings.

“three week stay with a young family of five, first time to Fiji”

Reviewed 1 Jul 2013

Traveled with 3 kids (2, 4, & 6). Service was excellent, esp Kerry before we left. The caretaker, Ramesh, was helpful with his local knowledge. He baby-sat a few times refusing payment, cooked a lovo dinner outside our back door, bought meat from the Nadi butcher etc. He lives 2 minutes away. The property was great, kids in one room parents in the other, 2 bathrooms. Large living area ideal for a long visit, fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher & laundry. Never ran out of hot water. After each day our tired kids watched a movie as we admired the view & cooked dinner. A car is essential. With baby seat our wagon cost $FJ 93/day. Sigatoka is a 30 min drive, beautiful Natadola Beach 1 hr, Pacific Harbor 1 hr. Petrol stations are cash only (outside major shops/supermarkets, it's a cash economy). Driving is safe but watch for roaming animals & speed cameras! Sigatoka now has a supermarket comparable to Nadi. Cooking was easier for adults.. a farmer selling spices at Sigatoka market gave us amazing dahl & curry recipes. Meal options were more boring for our kids but they coped & loved the pineapples, bananas. All up, Totoka Kalou was excellent for what we wanted to do. Here's what we got up to: First week we drove/walked down to Maui Bay to swim in the pool, snorkel, horse ride & climb fallen coconut trees. Kids loved the jetty, watching fish. 2nd week we ventured afield & went to resorts. Only the Outrigger didn't let us in. Our kids preferred Naviti, we the Warwick (snorkeling). Resorts were free to enter but on our last day Warwick said we should be paying $20/day each, maybe because school holidays had started? Third week was the most fun. We picked up hitchhikers, were invited into their villages to play rugby, kids visited a school. We met a village chief & had our best meal in Fiji cooked by his wife in their house! Take root kava when you are invited anywhere. A horse ride to the waterfall & 3-hr dinner conversation with the Eco Cafe owner were highlights

“Wonderful family holiday”

Reviewed 6 Jun 2013

We went to fiji for a family holiday and to attend a wedding at a nearby resort. We stumbled across Totoka Kalou by accident online and are so glad we did. The owners seem lovely and have put a lot of effort into renting out the house, and providing heaps of information before we left. We felt well prepared for all eventualities. Ramesh was there to welcome us when we arrived after a long overnight flight, and gave as great service and advice. My kids enjoyed snorkeling with him. We also visited a local school, which we really enjoyed. Having his local advice was wonderful. We found the house comfortable, great for our kids, we all sleep well loved the amazing views, and cool sea breezes. The kids loved the movie selection. But really we didn't spend too much time at home. We explored a lot of the local resorts, and swam at the Maui bay pool. Travelling with a one year old was a challenge all round, and the house has a big balcony so we had to really watch him, but we expected that. The bonus was I was able to enjoy some lovely sunrises when he woke me at 6am. We also used our rental car heaps, and were glad we organized a 4wd as Driveway is steep.

Response from the owner Many thanks for your review. We are very pleased to say the driveway is now concreted!

“Spectacular view, gorgeous home, great family location”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2013

We have just returned from Totoka Kalou, the house is very well set up and is exactly as shown in the photots [2 bedroom, 2 bathroom] with a truly, panoramic spectacular view. The clubhouse facilities are great with pool, shaded seating area, kitchen and toilet right on the beach. Snorkelling was amazing in the marine reserve not far from the clubhouse. Ramesh and Pinky are fantastic host who are on hand if u need them, and their curry is superb :). The market at Sigatoka is fantastic for fruit and veg, or buy from the stalls on the roadside. Shark dive booked thru the Dive shop in Pacific Harbour was a hit with our men, very safe and extremely well organised. Would not hesitate to recommend this home and location.

“Great Holiday”

Reviewed 6 Feb 2013

Totoka Kalou is every bit as good as the promotional material and then some. Excellent people to deal with and the local rep Ramesh is an absolute dream - friendly, unfailingly helpfull and has all the local knowledge. (If you are lucky enough to taste his mother's dahl soup you are in for a real treat). The amenities are extemely good and can comfortably accommodate a couple of families. A car is essential. The nearest shopping is Sigatoka about 30 minute drive away. A car is also handy for dragging the family back from the beach at the end of the day as the climb back to the house is challenging for little children. Brilliant views overlooking the bay.Beach all to yourself. Jump off jetty into clear blue water. Snorkel over the coral for a couple of hours. Check out the rock pools at low tide. No neighbours. Peace and solitude (except for our kids). Our two families loved it and will certainly return.

Beautiful views!! The house was clean and very well presented, even a hard drive with movies if you want to relax for a day. The water if beautiful and clear and walking distance away. Definitely need a car if you want to go anywhere tho. Had a wonderful time and would definitly come back again. Ramesh makes amazing curries and looks after you very well. Thank you for making our Fiji experience special and enjoyable.

“Maui bay wedding”

Reviewed 11 Jan 2013

We went to Maui Bay for our daughter's wedding. Finding accommodation for 9 people could have been difficult. Totoka Kalou suited our needs perfectly. The house had everything I would expect in a holiday rental. Ramesh (the caretaker) was a wonderful ambassador for Totoka Kalou, took care us, always with a smile.
