“quiet, off the main strip of town”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2015

My husband and I enjoyed our 2 week stay here. We stayed in the second floor unit. We had plenty of space and the balcony is very nice for breakfast or dinners. The housecleaner comes every other day and provides fresh towels. It is quiet because it is off the main strip- about a 15 minute walk to town. Keep in mind there is no AC so depending on the time of year you visit it could be hot inside. The ceiling fans in every room help but I think for the price it should probably have AC. Also I would recommend this for a family of 3 or more, it's not necessary for 2 people. Note the second bedroom is bunkbeds. Paul is very nice, we had to chance to meet him before we left. Also, highly recommend having Paul coordinate the pick up from the airport with their driver. It is the best way to ensure a smooth arrival. The price is fair and the driver is a great!

“Great, spacious apartment close to downtown”

Reviewed 2 Mar 2014

As many people have mentioned, Paul is an incredible host. While not present during our stay, he communicated promptly via email and helped us with a delayed check in. The house was ready when we arrived and we found the accommodations to exceed our expectations. The apartment is in a safe area close to town yet far enough away from the bulk of noise. The short walk to downtown was enjoyable but taxis drove by frequently enough to grab one for a dollar if desired. Some people mentioned excessive noise. The apartment is in a quieter part of town but does receive a lot of local traffic. I think the traffic, car alarms, etc are really unavoidable since we encountered this type of noise throughout all areas off Ecuador. We were never kept up at night or awakened too early by any of this noise. The apartment felt secure with a high wall and lockable gate around a nicely landscaped yard. The apartment does not have aC and did feel a bit hot at sometimes, mainly early afternoon. There are fans in every room which kept us at a comfortable temperature most of the time. The kitchen was well equipped and the wifi worked fine for us all week. We never met Maria but she brought us fresh water in the middle of our stay and made the beds mid week. We arranged our tours through the property manager, Ingrid, at Galapagos for You. Her prices seemed competitive to those we checked in town and her customer service was great. She arranged several last minute day tours for us and even picked us up one morning and drove us to the pier. I highly recommend you contact her for day tours or other needs. Overall we had a wonderful stay at Orchidea and would highly recommend it. The only advice for visitors is that day tours to other islands are via a 2 hour speedboat ferry each way. This leaves little time to see each island in detail. If we had 4 or 5 more days in the Galapagos we would have stayed a few nights on the other inhabited islands to see some more of the inland sights.

“relaxing!!!”

Reviewed 3 Feb 2014

The apartment is realy very nice and spacious. I had the apartment on the first floor, and I especially enjoyed the balcony with the hammock. So relaxing after a daytrip. Paul is very friendly and a great host. The location is very good close to the centre.

“Nice apartment!”

Apartment was roomy and had all the features as advertised! We were met on arrival and everything was taken care of and explained! The internet can be painfully slow. We were there in October so the temperature was fine. You might be hot in summer? There is so street noise, but nothing earplugs wouldn't take care of! Bring cash or an aTM card with you to the Galapagos. Most businesses don't like credit cards!

“beautifully furnished in the best location”

Reviewed 11 Nov 2013

Thank you so much Paul and Gaby for renting us your wonderful apartment! The booking from England was easy and your help was fantastic. The printable directions and advice was brilliant, (next time we will definitely get on the early flight!). We were met at the gates and shown how the shower, security and bin system worked. We were very pleased with such a well stocked kitchen and cooked everyday, we could even brew our local coffee in the Italian style cafetiere. Thanks again Paul, for being on hand, ( just over the garden) to answer our questions about the internet, we felt very welcome after our chat on the first evening. We loved the location so close to the CDC, playa estacion and town. It was our dream holiday and Orchidea was a luxurious retreat for us to unwind. The apartment was beautifully clean throughout, the bedding/towels I would have happily chosen myself; I have never seen such quality in all my years staying in Ecuador! Plenty of space to put bags, comfortable bed, loads of sockets for laptops and phones, relatively quiet street (for Ecuador), I would recommend this apartment of any one holidaying in Galapagos, in fact its really a place we could live in- so very easily! “Home away from home.”

Reviewed 4 Jul 2013

It was very nice to stay at an apartment instead of a hotel. We liked having the ability to cook and store our food, primarily breakfast before we set off for the day. Martha the housekeeper would always have the apt clean by the time we returned; with the dishes washed, bed made, and floor swept/mopped. Hot water available. Darwin station was 5 minutes away and Porto ayora was only 10 min away (walking). Fernanda helped with a taxi driver, Wilson, who was able drive us to the islands' tourist spots for a very good price. Paul was very friendly and had very good tips on how to make the most of our trip. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

“Peaceful rental close to Charles Darwin Research Station owned a”

As a biologist it was always a dream to visit the Galapagos. I was introduced to Paul via internet and found him to be most helpful in planning my trip even before I arrived. I wanted a land-based trip for flexibility, and Paul made many excellent suggestions. During my one week stay I went on three tours with Paul. What an experience to have a guide who is a real biologist with detailed knowledge of the flora and fauna fo the islands! The apartment was well furnished and supplied, very neat and clean, and quiet. Located on the edge of town, within easy walking distance of the Cdrs, restaurants, and bars, it provides an affordable alternative to hotels in Puerto ayora. I used the kitchen for breakfast and lunch, and had dinners out. The two bedrooms make it ideal for family, and the living room and balcony provide very liveable space. The place was impeccably clean, and the housekeeper even washed the dishes on a few occasions when I was in a hurry and left without doing them. It's easy to get around on foot or with the island taxis ($1 fare to anywhere in town), which made grocery shopping easy. The combination of a knowledgeable, friendly, and gracious host; location; and price make this rental a good value. It's not luxury, but that's not what I was looking for. I have already recommended this property to friends and intend to use it again myself.

“Clean, great location, wonderful landlord”

Reviewed 9 Feb 2013

We stayed at the Orchidea (upstairs) for 6 days. It was very nice and clean. We had a hammock on the front balcony, a fully working kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. Paul, our landlord, was awesome. We have rented properties around the world and Paul was the best landlord we have ever had. He was able to give us information on free stuff to do and recommended snorkeling tours. The house is close to town and in walking distance to local restaurants and shops, but off in the residential area where you won't be bother with noise. Thanks Paul for all your help during the trip. We had a lovely time!

“Look no further - much more than just excellent value accommodat”

Reviewed 11 Nov 2012

We are a family of four with two boys aged 8 and 7 and felt at home here from the moment we arrived - the accommodation has been ideal. It has been wonderful to have plenty of space including 2 good sized bedrooms with extensive cupboard space and a good sized kitchen with dining table and lounge area, also a very sweet patio out the front and a small rear garden with hammock. The front patio was very useful so we could keep out of Martha's way when she does the daily cleaning. She can also do washing for a modest fee. The house is located about a ten minute walk from the main town but it is a pleasant walk and means you are away from any of the bustle of the town. Should you need them, taxis pass frequently and are only $1. There are plenty of little shops dotted about, we found one less than five minutes walk away where we had croissants straight from the oven for breakfast. The owners Paul and Gaby live next door with their children and are, not only extremely welcoming and helpful, but also have the advantage of being very personable and experienced Galapagos guides themselves so have fantastic knowledge on the area and advice on where to go and what to do. This complements an extensive and lucid written guide which we referenced frequently. The combination of this availability of local knowledge proved to be absolutely invaluable. Paul and Gaby have been so generous to us and allowed us to use the Orchidea as a base for our stay across the month we were in the Galapagos, while we spent some time in San Cristobal and Isabela. We even managed to have some interesting inland trips together that we just wouldn't have thought of, while we happened to be on San Cristobal at the same time. Given we are homeschooling our boys, they also helped us to integrate into the Galapagos way of life which even included a visit to the local school! I would happily recommend Orchidea to anyone who is considering staying in Puerta ayora. We hope to return one day!

“Comforts of Home with a Friend Next Door”

Reviewed 21 May 2012

We were in the Galapagos for almost 10 days guided in large part by the excellent recommendations from Paul and a friend who had stayed at Orchidea a few months earlier. Orchidea was perfect and just wish we could have stayed here our entire trip. Paul was so helpful to us, and right next door. Orchidea is well located, just a few minutes walk to restaurants and the Charles Darwin station. We were there during the holidays and treated to a holiday parade that went right by the house. Another day, on the way out, we stopped to watch a girl's basketball tourney being played at the local park. The little house had everything we needed with room to dry wetsuits;/bathing suits on the back porch. It was great to come back to Orchidea to relax and regroup from our adventures. Use Paul's recommended taxi drivers, they are reliable and professional.
