I have never done reviews but my experience here was so great that I felt obliged to write something up. I went there with 5 of my friends after our study abroad program and we all agreed the house was absolutely perfect. Could not have asked for a better combination of price (especially $140 per week per person) and room! 4 of us had to sleep 2 to a bed but that was not really an issue but the other 2 got singles. There is a beautiful living room that is right next to the kitchen which allows for a great flowing ambiance on the first floor. 2 bathrooms were great as well. The porch that opened up to a backyard had hammocks and comfortable chairs so that in the afternoons you could hang out there. The tower on the top of the house allowed for a good view of the sunset every afternoon as well. It was the perfect distance from town for peace and quiet but only a 5 minute walk if you wanted to go to a restaurant in town. Finally, Paul was great with helping us organizing our tours as well as the house. Absolutely fantastic experience that was only made better by our fantastic living arrangements! I will most certainly be back one day
“I would recommend this house!”
Great house, lots of space, clean, helpful staff. Air conditioning would be nice but we recognize/commend the owner's attempt at being environmentally friendly!
“The most peaceful way to enjoy Santa Cruz.”
We had a great time on Santa Cruz. Renting the house was one of the best decisions I made because it allowed us the freedom to see the island on our own schedule. Vacations should have an element of excitement but also be relaxing. Paul’s house was a wonderful retreat. We could walk to the Darwin Research Station and visit Lonesome George as well as swim from their beach. We visited the highlands and walked (crawled) through the lava tunnels and saw the tortoises in their native state. We were also able to make a day trip to Isabella to see the penguins. The house was perfect for our family of five allowing everyone a bit space to themselves. The roof top porch was perfect for a evening drink and we saw a perfect rainbow over the island from that vantage point one morning. It was perfect in every way I had no complains! If you are looking for a restful place to enjoy the Island of Santa Cruz this is the perfect choice.
“Home Away From Home”
We had great time during our saty at Cactuspad and would highly recommend it to every one. It is like home away from home. Christina and Martha were extermely helpful and went out of the way to provide information and arrange all our needs.
“superb house rental”
You cannot do better than rent this house - sleeps 6 in 3 beautiful tooms, and has all the extras that you would want - esp in the kitchen and snorkelling gear! The hammocks were a definate favourite with our group, and the extra space allowed us to relax when we didnt feel like going out. We used the blenders to make fresh fruit juice every day and the kitchen equipment was enough for a BBQ with friends... cannot put into words how happy we were! Marta the housekeeper was a gem, and made us feel so welcome. It is only a 10 minute walk into town, so very easy to find, and with a bakery only a 5 minute walk away.. you have everything you need. There wasnt anything I disliked about the house at all!
“Wonderful place to stay!”
We enjoyed our visit at The Cactus Pad. The home was comfortable and had all of the amenities (save air conditioning) that one would need! The location was close to town and we could easily walk or take an inexpensive cab ride to all areas. Everyone was very helpful and provided advice and assistance whenever necessary. We hope to return in the future for another visit!
“We loved the Cactuspad!”
Paul was extremely helpful from our first contact until the end of your stay. He answered all of our email questions promptly, booked our flights out of Quito, and connected us with Cristina, who was able to arrange day trips to several other islands. We used the Cactuspad as a beautiful, spacious, comfortable, and convenient base from which to launch our Galapagos island tours. Privacy and security were very good here. We made good use of the kitchen space and cooking equipment. I appreciated the laminated maps and guide brochures as well as a variety of books including an authoritative one on birds. Martha the housekeeper was efficient, helpful, and thoughtful. I hope we have the chance to stay here again.
“Oasis in the Galapagos”
We (two couples) rented the CactusPad in early December, 2009. It was ideal. It is located in a quiet and safe neighborhood, just a few blocks from the center of Puerto Ayora. The house was clean and well equipped and the daily maid service was a bonus. We had planned on having another couple with us, but they could not get away. Six adulta could share the house, but the fold out bed in the living room would have to be made up each morning. We concluded that this would be a minor inconvenience. The financial arrangements worked smoothly. We paid the full rental cost in advance, and gave the maid a key deposit of $50 cash on arrival. (The deposit was returned upon check out.) The owner called us shortly after we arrived to confirm that we had arrived and connected with the maid. He was able to answer a few questions we could not phrase for the maid in our pigeon Spanish. That was a nice touch. We concluded that staying in a house in Puerto Ayora was preferable to being herded around as part of a tour group. We were able to schedule activities at our leisure. For example, we saw parts of the Charles Darwin Center that the tour groups by-passed because they had a schedule to meet. There are many opportunities for day trips from Puerto Ayora, and we enjoyed those that we selected. We recommend the CactusPad.
“A wonderful surprise”
I would stay again at the Cactus Pad. As a woman travelling alone it served as a central base to enjoying Santa Cruz island, and being able to take trips to other islands. The house is spacious, beautifully appointed, and fully equipped making it home from home, and often, I enjoyed one of the 3 hammocks slung in the shaded and well kept garden. The owners Paul and Gaby, helped organise both my airticket and a taxi driver for meet and greet at the Baltra airport making my arrival and transfer to the house easy and stressfree. Whether you are a family needing a spacious home to rent or a person alone, the Cactus Pad is a must.
“Great House, Great Value!”
My wife, 5 year old daughter, 75 year old father and I stayed in the CactusPad for four nights in October, 2009. As a veteran traveler and a regular user of the internet, I must say that I was surprised and pleased that the place was even better than it appeared in the pictures. Immaculately clean, extremely well appointed, yet homey would sum it up. Don't worry about forgetting to pack the "little things" as cork screws, coffee pots, magazines, etc. are all there! The garden is beautiful and quiet. Paul had a small splash pool set up for my daughter and she loved it! The hammocks on the deck are great for just chilling. We chose CactusPad because of our age requirements. Our thinking was that if we wanted to go hiking about my dad could relax in a home-like atmosphere (with cable TV) as opposed to sitting in a small hotel room. That did, in fact work out perfectly, as did the fact that the kid lost herself in the nice selection of kids' books and fell asleep as though she were home...allowing my wife and I a night out. The location of the house is in the residential district of the town. During our first day we walked to the main drag in 15 minutes. However, we quickly learned that the plentiful taxis would take us anywhere in Puerto Ayora for a buck..afterwords we just hopped a taxi and started our adventures fresh after a three minute ride. By the way, if you don't have a small kid or a senior citizen, there are a couple of bikes to use in the house that will get you "downtown" in 5 minutes. All in all the CactusPad is a bargain. I looked at Red Mangrove at $450 a night, and SolyMar at 250, but we felt more comfortable at the house for a fraction of that. We stayed only a few nights, but wished we'd stayed longer...next time we will. By the way, if you don't cook, Hernan's Cafe does carry-out, great food and for a buck you're back home with it...still better than a 250 room! Cheers to Paul! Thanks and well done!
