"There are many great places to eat in South Padre Island, but here are a couple of my personal favorites: Fo cajun seafood - Daddy's Restaurant - great bisque's, fresh oysters and anything fried is always good here! The best local place - Blackbeard's - no trip is complete without a visit here since it has great food at reasonable prices. You have to try The Deep, a delicious fried flounder sandwich. And finally, probably one of the nicest and consistently best restaurants ar...

"If you enjoy nightlife; here's a couple of suggestions - Wanna Wanna is a quaint beach bar with nightly entertainment on the weekends. They target a little older crowd in an open, airy space. Clayton's on the other hand is the largest beach bar on the Island and caters to all age groups; especially the young at heart! And then there's Louis Backyard that offers not only one of the best seafood buffets, but also some pretty amazing nightlife that can accommodate large crowds...

"Fishing, scuba diving, jet skiing, horseback riding and a water park are just a few adventures you and your family can partake in. We especially enjoy the miniature golf courses (3) as well as go karts (big kids can play too). And no trip is complete without an eco-tour or dolphin watch boat ride."

"I suggest Harpoon Barry's. Everything is good but we can't say enough nice things about the fish tacos. Frequent and good live music in the adjacent courtyard. Beer, wine and setups. Free pool, chill surfer vibe and a sand sculpture monument to legendary surfer and artist Harpoon Barry. Stop by for Happy Laundry Hour - the washateria is right next door."

"South Padre Island is the Sand Castle Capital of the universe, and is one of the few places on the earth where you can get a sand castle lesson from a professional sand sculptor, all year round. The well-equipped instructor shows up on the beach outside of your condo or hotel to help you and your family build the best sandcastle ever. Check out the SPI Sandcastle Trail - 30+ stops up and down the island where you can see examples of world class sand sculpture. Both bike and s...

"Many travelers seek a South Padre dolphin adventure. I highly recommend pontoon boat excursions led by Scarlet Colley, her husband, George, and Rozzi the "Dolphin Dog" into Gulf waters for an intimate dolphin experience greatly superior to the big charter boat tours. Scarlet sings to the dolphins, who apparently, hear her and appear to play in the boat’s wake, providing a thrilling, mind-filling, and heart-warming adventure. "Families love the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, the kids are allowed to touch some of the rescued turtles and the workers there give fascinating (short) lectures to educate the kids on the importance of saving the endangered Kemp's Ridley Sea turtles who are now protected and hatch on South Padre island . among other Gulf coast locations. Another fun activity is the Dolphin Watch boat trips - most visitors get to see the playful dolphins swimming around the boats, tempting the t...

"The Birding Center and the Convention Center both have great walking areas to enjoy the birds and you may even get to see the alligator who lives there. Of course my favorite thing to do is a walk on the beach or a swim in the pool. Para sailing, wind surfing or sky diving are also available for the adventurous."

About South Padre Island

Long stretches of white sand…blue water…palm trees swaying in tropical breezes…surfing, kiteboarding, fishing, shopping. It all sounds wonderful, and the best part is that you don’t have to head to the Caribbean to enjoy this beautiful beach getaway. It’s all available in South Padre Island, Texas.

Only one-half mile across at its widest, South Padre Island nestles just off the southern tip of Texas, with the Laguna Madre on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. It’s perfectly situated for the perfect vacation, whether you plan lazy days on the beach or a vacation filled with activity. There are lots of reasons why South Padre Island is a perennial favorite getaway, for families, for couples, and for singles.

You can spend your stay on South Padre Island lazing at the beach, but for those in a more active mood, there’s windsurfing and parasailing. Rent a bike to explore the island, head out for a day’s fishing, ride horseback along the beach at sunset, play 18 holes on a bayside golf course, and more. Nature lovers can hike, dive, bird-watch, enjoy a dolphin-watching cruise, or learn about rescue and conservation at Sea Turtle, Inc. Contact a local sandcastle designer and take a lesson in building your own fantasy sand palace. If you don’t get enough water at the beach, check out Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark & Resort, a great place for a family to spend a day.

South Padre Island offers great food, from hamburgers to Mexican, from seafood to Italian, from sidewalk cafés to beachside diners to casual fine dining. After dark, South Padre can be as relaxing or exciting as you choose. Stroll the beach in the moonlight or follow the music to dance at one of the island’s clubs. Friday evenings during the summer, stop by one of the bars or restaurants on the Laguna Madre side of the island so you can watch the weekly fireworks display.

With average temperatures between 70° and 90° – rarely dropping below 60° even during winter – just about any time is a great time to visit South Padre Island. Springtime brings migrating birds and nesting turtles back to the island, fall celebrates Sandcastle Days, and the weather is gorgeous year-‘round. By car, drive to Port Isabel and cross the causeway. Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport is served by American Airlines, United Airlines and AeroMéxico. Valley International Airport in Harlingen is served by Southwest Airlines, AirTrans, Sun Country Airlines, and Delta Airlines. Shuttle service to South Padre Island is available from both airports.

The WAVE, South Padre Island’s free shuttle, runs from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and serves both South Padre Island and Port Isabel, the nearest mainland city. It’s handicapped-accessible and equipped with bike racks and free Wi-Fi. For those who might prefer to get around under their own steam, bicycle rentals are also available.
