“Le Pichetâ€- lovingly restored and tastefully furnished, largely in oak, this lovely stone house and its beautiful garden offer wonderful views west with fabulous sunsets over the mountains. Situated in a tranquil hamlet at 800m above sea level, it accommodates 2-6 with a reduced price option for 2-4. We also offer painting/sculpture tuition and exclusive full board painting holidays, and the area is superb for walking.
Built, as are many houses in the region, partly into the hillside, "Le Pichet" adjoins "La Carrette", the former farmhouse which we now also have the privelege to own. Over the past... 15 years we have lovingly restored Le Pichet to retain as many of the original features as possible - the "pas de oiseaux" originally built for thatching purposes, and the beams of the old roof structure. Tastefully and comfortably furnished, and now hung with paintings by Rodney and embroideries by Eleri, we are proud to welcome you into this part of our home.
The house benefits from superb light, particularly in the afternoons and evenings in the downstairs dining room and upstairs rooms. The ground floor consists of a spacious dining room, bathroom and well equipped kitchen; an oak stairway leads to the first floor consisting of a light, high-ceilinged and spacious living room( which can also serve as an extra bedroom) and two lovely bedrooms. There are two letting options - see additional information on prices.
The lovely west-facing garden is an idyllic place to relax and enjoy the view, and offers stunning sunsets over the mountains. Planted with roses, honeysuckle and clematis, it is a magical spot in all seasons; you are most welcome to use its abundant herbs in your cooking, and help yourselves to raspberries, rhubarb and salad when available. A shaded paved area ideal is for preparing and enjoying your barbecue, and there is communal parking.
The two bedrooms are on the first floor on either side of the living room which can also serve as a bedroom should you wish. You can choose all three rooms, or for 2-4 persons at a reduced rate, the chalet bedroom and the living room.
-The “chalet†bedroom with double bed, shelves, hangers.
- The beamed bedroom, in calm colours of beige white and pink contains a double bed, single bed, wardrobe and shelves.
- The living /bed room contains a canape-gigogne (2 singles), sofa, armchair and bookcase.
All the rooms look beyond the garden to the Col de la Core and the slopes of Mt.Valier - at dawn bathed pink in the early light of sunrise, with the smoke curling up from the chimneys of Arrous, and only the sound of birdsong, the stream gurgling below and cowbells. At night, the sky scattered with a million sparkling stars is pure enchantment.
Small but functional, the bathroom contains everything you need: bath (with shower attachment), washbasin and w.c. The blue tiling is light and clear in summer, warm in winter. A big storage tank(situated out of sight under the stairs) ensures you have plentiful hot water.
Towels and sheets are optional (10€ppw)
The house is very well equipped so that you can enjoy your stay in comfort
-Kitchen: oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine; small food-mixer; slow-cooker, raclette and fondue - the region boasts a huge number cheeses - cow, sheep, goat or any combination of the three (eg Bethmale, Rogallais, Bamalou) and superb choice raclette meats.
The living room contains a well stocked bookcase (English/French) for wide- ranging interests; numerous maps/walking guides, gardening, cookery, historical, biography, novels.
Leaving the the Garbet (valley of the Montreurs d’Ours) between Oust and Erce, you follow a lane which twists and turns among woods and flowers, always climbing, to its end – and there is Miramont, a little paradise on earth overlooking the Bassin d’ Oust. Formerly devoted to agriculture, the hamlet consists today of eleven pretty, well renovated barns and houses, where you will be sure of peace and quiet.
Nearby: superb walking; horse-riding at Oust, Erce; donkey-hire at Seix, Aleu; canoe/kayak above Seix; swimming; fishing; paragliding; ski-ing at Guzet.
The villages of Oust and Seix supply all needs –a well known butcher, bakeries, supermarkets, doctor, pharmacy, several restaurants (the “Garbet†is superb). The bustling town of St. Girons has a wide variety of shops supermarkets, not to mention its wonderful Saturday market.
The Couserans ( 18 valleys converging on St. Girons) has a rich cultural history of which the Ariegeois are justly and fiercely proud: Gallo-Roman St. Lizier adjoining St. Girons, medeival Foix; the traditions of the Bethmale, world famous prehistoric caves at Lombrives, Niaux; Tarascon’s park of prehistoric art; Cathar castles, and summer festivities everywhere.Read more

Beautiful, rustic gites in a quiet mountain setting
Left on 04/19/2010 for a stay in February 2010 | Bebb's
We stayed in the Ariege gite in february as part of our first Family skiing holiday. Henry (10) and Louis (9) and I all had a fantastic time on the slopes of Guzet and found Ariege and it's people so warm and friendly. The Gite it's self is warm and rustic and each day brings a new and wonderful view across the mountains. We're all really looking forward to returning next year.

The warmest of welcomes, most charming of cottages, and most beautiful surroundings! The only “problem” is the leaving, one would want to stay on indefinitely. Thanks Eleri, Rodney and William for all your care, help and hospitality, hope to be back soon.
