Las VegasGreat View
Left on 07/01/2012 for a stay in June 2012
This was a super vacation for us. Spent most of our time on the front porch staring at the lake. Brought small dogs ... the fenced in back yard was great. Chain link fence with no spots to sneak out! Lots of room inside. Loved the view from kitchen and living room! Only cons were lots of ants in the kitchen and people turning around in the driveway (being on a dead end road). Saw 2 bald eagles and many blue heron. Having the dock right there was great!

That view from the porch is great, isn’t it? And with such a secure backyards, there’s no need to worry about any pets you bring along. We are sorry to hear about the ant problem, however during this time of year in the National Forest, it is very common in any home to have ants. Just one of the small downsides to spending a wonderful summer in Big Bear! If you’re interested in returning in the winter or next summer, simply call, (855) 856-6706 and one of our friendly Vacation Planners can get your family all taken care of!

Left on 01/05/2012 for a stay in December 2011
The location on the lake and the deck made this a great find! However, the cabin was not as clean as it could have been and when we arrived there were beer caps on the deck, broken beer bottles in the snow and fast food garbage in front of the deck. I also wouldn't recommend using the fireplace because of the smoke smell. The house smelled like campfire when we arrived. We used the fireplace the first night and all of our belongings smelled like a campfire when we arrived home 4 days later.

We have stayed in this cabin many times in the past and always loved it before but the improvements to what was already a great place were unbelievable. We love the huge porch, the change to the bathroom off the kitchen the boothe in the kitchen and the table in the dining room and the new sofa and the new TV in the living room. Also loved what was done to the driveway and the wooden fence around the front yard. I would also like to thank Ray, I think that's who I spoke to early Friday morning, he was on call about having to leave early due to my husband being ill and not being able to turn the key in. He was very understanding and we were able to agree on a place to leave the key so we could leave quickly. I would also like to thank Meagan whom I spoke to once we got down the hill and her reassurance that all had been taken care of about the key and our checkout over the phone. I can't remember the girl who checked us in but she was also great so please convey my thanks to all. We had a great time at this cabin and hopefully can do it again. You guys rock!

We loved the location of the cabin. We slept very well and enjoyed the deck and view. Our concerns are: because there is no dishwasher, some folks may not clean as well as we prefer. We brought our own glasses and paper plates and napkins. I hope the kitchen will be the next to be redone as the cupboards are really greasy with age. A new sponge should always be provided and adequate reading lights. We bought bulbs because we like to read.
Tv was great! Would not have missed sunset/moon rise with in a few minutes of eachother. -

Great place to stay Perfectlocation. Very close to skiing, innertubing, stores etc. We would stay there again for sure.
Downfall: The bed in the master was very uncomfortable, my husband slept on the couch the second night because he said it was more comfortable than the bed.
The address is different on the directions and the property. The address on the directions is 20090(example) and that is not listed anywhere on the physical property. When you pull up, the property number was 212 which is suppose to be 149. It looked the same as the property online, so I took my chances with the key and tried to open the door.
The road is unpaved, so beware if you are going up there in a car. We had an SUV, but I could see how easy it would be for a car to get stuck in the mud/ snow.
Overall I did like the place it was clean, had all the supplies we needed.Response from Big Bear Vacations - 03/01/2011
Manager
The correct address is 212 Fisher Road. We will make sure it is correct inour system. The key that is given to a guest has our accounting designation for the property. We do this to prevent any issues in the event the key is lost or dropped. It is also how reservations are made and the property is tracked. We are sorry this caused you any confusion.

This house was adorable. It was very cute and cabiny in decor, but, it was clean and updated too. There were TVs in both bedrooms and the living room, and it had the most incredible view of the lake. It also had a very large deck overlooking the lake which we ate lunch on one day and it was awesome. Because there is an unpaved road in front of the house, it was a bit muddy. We would definitely stay there again. By the way, with the online registration, check in took 2 minutes!

Left on 01/23/2011 for a stay in January 2011
When we first arrived we couldn't find the cabin because the cabin number was 212 and didn't have the name when the cabin name is Frank Old Bear #149. We were lost for 2 hours looking for the cabin. They should change the cabin number to 149 so the number could match the papers and key and put they cabin's name. They need to fix the pull-out couch bed. The cabin was very spacey. It had a great lake view. We had a good time here. We plan to come back during summer time with our boat.
Response from Big Bear Vacations - 02/01/2011
Manager
Thank you for your response to our survey. The cabin number and the address have nothing to do with each other. We give instructions on how to get to a cabin on our check in paper work. We checked what those instructions are and think they are accurate. City ordinance mandates that every rental house in Big Bear have a sign on it with the rental Company's name--this is there also There is no posting of our accounting sytems cabin numbers on the house. This is a security issue. If the key is lost (and they are) no one knows what the key is for. We hope you had a nice time while your were in Big Bear.

When we arrived and finally found it we were impressed with how much parking and how close it was to the lake. Really beautiful. The kitchen was big and the heater worked great! We had 8 people cause it said there was two twins a full a queen and a pull out couch bed. Well, the pull out couch bed did not work and was completely broken. Two people had to sleep on the ground cause we weren't prepared with an airmatress. I would go back here, but only with 6 people.

We have stayed a few times at Frank's Old Bear. We love being so close to the lake for fishing and for our dogs to swim. The cabin is cozy with 2 bedrooms a great living room and fire place. Our favorite is the backyard is fenced for the dogs and the deck out front has an awesome view of the lake. We plan on staying here every time we are in Big Bear. It's close to the village but far enough away from the business of the town. We look forward to returning soon.

Wow Wow & Wow. From the moment we walked in to check in. The service was Excellant! What a delightful experience. We got to use their pool & spa, swings, horse shoes, etc. We got to be part of their BBQ on Monday night & dance to a live band. We had privacy!!! It's the end house/cabin on the dead end dirt road yet walking distance to the lodge amenities. Right on the water with your own dock! We rented a boat & had such a good time. Wood burning fireplace came in handy for smores ;~) Read the guest book! This is the place we are going to every year!

Left on 07/22/2010 for a stay in July 2010
This was our second time at Frank's Old Bear. We love its location, the peace and quiet of the lake and the fact that only locals pass by the cabin to get to their favorite fishing spot. The cabin has been remodeled since our last visit and we especially love the larger front porch. We were able to sit on the porch while watching the kids swim in the lake. The new windows look great, however, do take away from the "rustic look" inside. The fenced backyard was large enough for our 3 big dogs we were able to bring along, as without them, it would not have been a true family vacation. If I could add one more thing to the cabin, I would put some sort of see-through plexi glass along the railing of the front port, so to not block the wonderful view, or maybe a "pretty" fence, only to avoid either small children falling off the front porch or as in our case, super friendly dogs wanting to greet everybody coming by the cabin. The cabin was well equipped and it was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. We certainly will be back again.

Our New Years stay was great.
Just need to fix a few things in the cabin.
The firewood grate was collapsed causing smoke
because there was no airflow going up from under
the wood. I propped it up on a few rocks... the smoke problem coming into the livingroom was resolved.
There is an electrical issue in the bathroom by
the bedrooms. There is no GFI outlet...
there is a strange electrical current somehow getting
to the shower handles... kids got a shock...
I felt a small current when I was taking a bath
and turned the handle. THIS IS A MUST FIX !!!
The driveway needs to be plowed better for better access to cabin.
Coffe filters... a must... they are pennies to buy...
don't be cheap when people are spending $2000.00 for 4 nights.
Loved being by the lake... Skiing was AWESOME !!!
I want to reach my financial goals so I can buy
a cabin and rent it out too :-)
I've been a skier for 42 years... Love the mountains... would live there if I could :-)

The location of the house was superb, the inside was good ( not great). two major problems :one is the heater , the thermostat has a mind of his own the temperture rises to 80 at night and no way to lower it even if u turn it off it wont so i spent most of the time tryng to fix it. the second major thing was the plumbing the first day it was fairly bad then at night all sinks toilets ,... was cloaked. no phone in the house to call anyone and the manager when we called was rude and yelled at us instead of apologising. ( will never use this company again)even though we used it before everytim we go to lake arrowhead and big bear.

We stayed at Frank's Old Bear for Thanksgiving week and it was awesome. There was plenty of room for us, our 4 kids (ages 7, 7, 6 and 4), 2 dogs and even my father in law who came up for Thanksgiving day. The kitchen was very well stocked, even for cooking a holiday meal, (all I had to buy was a disposable roasting pan for the turkey) there was even a meat thermometer. The kids all fit well in the bedroom (which appears to have been upgraded because it had new quilts on the bed (just saw them at Target) and some really warm fuzzy extra blankets that the kids loved), and it had a tv which was a bonus since they don't have one in their room at home. We loved the fact that the lake was right there so if one of the kids got cold while fishing they could go back to the cabin and we could keep an eye on the house too. Fishing was great and they all caught lots of trout for dinner. We even made use of the playground. The fenced yard was a huge bonus because the dogs could run around without worries, and my kids would have never gone away for a week without taking their dogs. Needless to say none of us wanted to leave. The kids asked if we could just stay and live there, so I guess we will definitely be going back to Frank's again. We had a wonderful and relaxing week and were very comfortable in the house! Thank you.

The place is cozy. If you are looking for an upscale place to stay at, this place is not for you. It is not the nicest place on the lake, but at the same time it is comfortable and great for the simple minded people. The view is great. Excellent for fishing. If you arrive at night it's a little hard to find the place. Would stay there again.

Franks Old Bear and Shore Acres is a great place to spend your summer. This was our 14th summer at Shore Acres for our family of 5. Our children have literally grown up enjoying the swings, pool, playground and fishing when they were young to enjoying the pingpong, badmitton, horseshoes, tubing and wakeboarding as they have grown older. To help complete our summer of delight, the owner and fantastic staff hold a Monday night BBQ each week with live music so all the guests and their children can meet and mingle. A great vacation spot for the young and old.

If you're willing to pay for the view alone, then stay here. The view was incredible. The house, on the other hand, has major issues. When I first walked in I thought the blinds were nicotine stained, but they're just a funky color. Peeling paint outside, peeling paint inside, pipes exposed in the wall (10" x 3.5" area)in the back bathroom, we found a pink pair of little girl's underwear under the t.v., ants in the kitchen and back bathroom, my father stayed in the lower bunk which had sheets that must've been as old as he is (he's 87)they were once white but are now just dingy tannish, the comforters on the beds have some sort of plastic on the inside which "crunch" whenever they are moved, glad I brought my own pillows as the ones provided were also too old to still be in use, and the general public is allowed to drive down through Shore Acres Lodge and in front of this little place to go fishing. It's a real shame because this place could be adorable if it were taken care of. What a bummer. It was nice to have a fenced back yard area for our dogs and the stove is almost brand new.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Frank's Old Bear. This is an old rustic cabin located at one of the best fishing spots on the lake. We have reviewed our cleaning standards with our housekeeping department to ensure all of our guests check-in to a clean house.
