The Cape Cod Museum of Art was founded in 1981 by a group of local artists with the goal of building a collection representing the work of Cape and Island artists to ensure that future generations would be able to view and appreciate the artistic contribution of the region. We define our region geographically – running from the North River in Duxbury on a more or less straight line down to New Bedford, also including the offshore islands. The reason for this is that the canal is, and the bridges are, relatively recent additions to the landscape and affect an understanding of the geology of Cape Cod. The earliest work in our collection dates to the mid 19th century with paintings by Jerome Thompson and J. J. Audubon. Our collection also includes works from the earliest artist colonies in Provincetown and Martha’s Vineyard, home to a major African-American artist colony, as well as examples of work from instructors and students of renowned Provincetown art schools. Our collection is rounded out by 20th and 21st century artists representing many disciplines. The Cape Cod Museum of Art has seven galleries, a sculpture garden, an education center including a sculpture and clay studio, an auditorium with facilities for screening films, and shopping available at The Artful Hand Gallery @CCMA. Exhibitions change on a regular basis throughout the year; annually.
