One of the first forts built along the Caloosahatchee River, Fort Myers remains a popular city, even though its original function as a base of operations against the Seminole Indians has long since ceased. Today, Fort Myers is a popular tourist destination, with its Historic Downtown area – a waterfront entertainment district that was notably the former home of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Tours of the former homes of these early Americans are available to tourists. Edison even lends his name to the Edison Festival of Light, an annual three-week-long celebration held in February and culminating in a Grand Parade, which celebrates the inventor's contributions to mankind. Fort Myers' historical museum is devoted, not only to Edison, but to other important events and traditions, with a particular emphasis on Fort Myers and the surrounding area.

Outdoor activities, like exploration of the nature in the surrounding areas, are a perfect way to spend an afternoon. The Calusa Nature Center – a museum devoted to Florida's natural history – is also home to a Planetarium and a Butterfly Aviary, which can be a wonderful educational experience for children and parents alike.

Fort Myers is also home to Fort Myers Beach, known as one of the world's safest beaches for its calm waters and easily accessible sand bars. Fort Myers Beach offers all sorts of seaside activities, including water sports and fishing. Fort Myers Beach is also home to floating casinos, where visitors can try their luck at winning on the slot machines or at the tables.
