Description from the owner
Fantastic old stone and beamed house in a tiny village in the Alpujarra mountains in Andalucia Southern Spain. Ideal for walkers and nature lovers. The house has a living room with wood-burning stove, kitchen, bathroom and two connecting bedrooms so sleeps 2-4. There´s a balcony and a huge roof terrace with incredible mountain views. We are just over an hour from Granada and the splendid Alhambra and a little more than two hours from Malaga international airport. The whitewashed villages of the Alpujarras were the last home of the arab kings in Spain and are redolent with charm and history. The pace of life is slow and relaxed and the countr...Read more

Dublin,IrelandBarbara made us feel very much at home"
Left on 01/14/2013 for a stay in October 2012
We were keen to try a self-catering break in the Taha Valley/Ferreirola area and Google brought us to Casa Barbara. We contacted its owner Barbara Lynch and booked for a week’s stay in early October. Language-teacher Barbara kindly met us off the bus in Pitres and drove us to Ferreirola – a very welcome gesture after a spectacular but longish trip from Granada. This saved us a bit of a trek. Casa Barbara turned out to be a typical village house which she has converted into a charming, quirky hideaway. Adjoined to her own house, it has two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, a lovely balcony/dining area and a comfortable lounge featuring a superb collection of books as well as a table full of useful info for walkers. The whole ambience was reminiscent of the kind of seaside bungalow your parents might have rented when you were a child.
The old-fashioned but fully equipped kitchen was well-stocked with some essential foods which Barbara told us to feel free to use (and she had also done some shopping for us because the supermarket in Pitres was closing just before the bus arrived). The house also features a flat roof with views across the valley; it’s a lovely place to sit and read as the sun heads for the horizon and the heat of the day diminishes (but Barbara warns: don’t indulge alcoholically up there, because the access is via a steep flight of steps requiring full concentration and an ability to walk backwards!)
Ferreirola is beautifully located in the heart of the alpujarras mountains. It’s ideally placed for walks in the La Taha Valley, but it is remote, and a car (or a generous host like Barbara Lynch) is almost essential if you’re self-catering. There are no shops in the village; the baker’s van arrives daily, a frozen-food van calls a few days a week, and we also heard that there is a vegetable van. So without a car you have to walk up the steep and sweaty track to shop in Pitres. (And in the supermarket you might meet the most coldly hostile person we have ever encountered behind a shop counter.) But that’s another story: in short, we enjoyed our stay, the price was right – we walked our legs off, and as Barbara waved us off on the bus back to Granada we left with a lot of happy memories. -

We are serious walkers and Ferriorola is hiking paradise, a slice of heaven dropped into southern Spain. We stayed for three weeks and found plenty of walks with lots of variety. You are within striking distance of both the high Sierra and delightful village paths. Without doubt you need a car are shops are a couple of kilometers away. The accomodation is traditional, low ceilings, small windows and a bit basic - but is spacious and has a smashing roof terrace from which to watch the sunset. This isn't a luxury appartment but we found it comfortable and practical. An added bonus was a well informed but unobtrusive landlady who helped us arrange overnight stays at the nearby high altitude mountain refuge. We had a cracking holiday and if you have a love of nature and enjoy walking I would recommend you book some time at Casa Barbara.

Suffolk, UKA lovely authentic house in a wonderful village
Left on 01/03/2012 for a stay in October 2011
We have stayed in Casa Barbara for the last three years for a week in October and will definitely be returning in 2012.We love the peace and tranquillity, the beautiful mountain scenery and the opportunity to stay in an authentic alpujarran house. The mountain walking is wonderful and there is a comprehensive network of GR trails and mule paths which take you around the valley and beyond. We love collecting our drinking water from the village fuente and walking up to Pitres to buy our groceries. There is are bars within walking distance all with free wifi so it is easy to stay in touch. Barbara is a great landlady, perfectly unobtrusive but amazingly helpful. We cannot wait for our next visit!

Absolutely loved Casa Barbara and Ferreirola. The village is magical with breathtaking views everywhere you look. The people we met are among the most friendly and interesting we have ever met. The house itself oozes charm and originality. Although there are few amenities in the village, the nearby village of Pitres has everything you could possibly need. Although I would say, try to stock up on all groceries and supplies you may need before you arrive at Casa Barbara, as once you get there you will find it very hard to leave...

It´s true, you find it hard to leave the village and local walks, I still do after all my years here, but there are 4 places to eat and drink within a 20 minute walk of the house so you can´t starve. Mind out for the local wine (costa) - it has a kick like a mule.

Manchester UKcharming house in idyllic alpujarran village
Left on 12/27/2011 for a stay in April 2011
Ferreirola is one of the most beautiful of the alpujarran villages and Casa Barbara is a perfect rustic retreat. The property you rent is the top floor of an old moorish style house, full of bohemian charm: with wooden beams, skylights and a covered balcony with amazing views across the Rio Trevelez gorge. The place has everything you need and best of all has a really chilled out ambience. You can almost feel the peace. The house is on the edge of the village and within seconds you are on tiny donkey paths winding through terraces of lemon and olive trees. Its a perfect spot for a walking holiday or just for relaxing and working your way through the fantastic collection of books.
Barbara was a great host and even arranged drivers for us at the last minute when we thought we would be unable to hire a car. When we then cancelled this, it was no problem.
This is definitely somewhere I would love to visit again. I can't think of anywhere in the world more relaxing.

WintertonWonderfull authentic cottage of la alpujarra.
Left on 12/26/2011 for a stay in May 2009
We have stayed with Barbara for 10 years apart from the last 2 where we have been prevented from staying due to my having an accident. During the 10 years that we stayed, we visited at least twice per year sometimes 3. Barbara is a great host, nothing is too much trouble and she will leave you to your own devises, should you wish. Barbara has lived in the area for many years and consequently, her knowledge of the local area, customs, problems to be aware of etc etc is invaluable.
Through Barbara, we have managed to make friends with many of the locals which in its self helps make a great relaxing break. The cottage is very old and built in a traditional mountain style. We have lain in bed just staring at the superb build method of the roof and that is just one point of fasination, there are many more secrets to unlock.
The walks around the area are majical and you really will require more than one week to do this little prortion of Spanish majic justice.

Auckland, NZWe stepped inside the the perfect mountain village postcard!
Left on 12/11/2011 for a stay in September 2011
This was the best experience of our 6 week overseas holiday. Barbara welcomed us warmly and was very helpful with suggesting lovely walks and recommending local cafes and restaurants in the area.
The house has the romance of the past with exposed beams and stone flagstones but with modern comforts. Relaxing in the shade on the terrace with a glass of wine was a favourite pastime in the hot mid afternoons. We explored the unspoilt village enjoying the twisting streets with different views around each corner. The locals were friendly and one of my favourite memories was dining at an outside table watching the sun go down over the mountains while live music played.
