So central and yet so serene. Villa San is about as close as you can get to the heart of Bali’s cultural capital of Ubud – just a five minute walk from the Royal Palace and some of the towns best restaurants and galleries – yet when you leave the dusty street and walk into the peaceful tropical garden compound, the hustle and bustle of the outside world vanishes in an instant.

Sleeping twelve guests in three pairs of bedroom suites (the master suite having its own TV lounge in between the twin and king-bedded rooms), Villa San appears to have been designed with families in mind, but its layout also works well for group...s of friends and couples, with all rooms having plenty of space and spanking new (2011) luxurious bathrooms. A good choice of living areas, including an entertainment room with home theatre, an air-conditioned glass-walled playroom brimming with toys and games and a large comfortable balé pavilion at the far end of the 25m lap pool, means there’s a place for everyone.

Villa San’s owners are regular visitors and their presence and style is evident in the room space, walls and even floors (beautiful and colourful rugs in the bedrooms) which have been adorned with a delightfully eclectic collection of artwork, sculpture and handicrafts from both Asia and Africa. It’s clear that the large team of staff at Villa San want you to enjoy your holiday too. The chef has trained in Europe and can turn his hand to an impressive range of cuisine – from Japanese to Mexican – preparing meals for up to 20 people (provisions are on guest account). If you want to cook up your own storm however, the open-plan, well equipped guest kitchen is socially situated next to the living area and there is someone to shop for you.

Beyond Villa’s San’s peaceful garden compound, Ubud is crying out to be discovered. The town and the small villages surrounding it are rich with culture and art. Many villages focus on a specific craft – such as woodworking, stone carving, ikat weaving or batik painting – which have provided the livelihoods of the inhabitants for several hundred years. Guests can visit, watch and, in many cases, take classes. Ubud is also home to great shopping and a delightful variety of high quality restaurants and cafes. The vast, bustling local Ubud Market is only 300m from Villa San’s front door, opposite The Royal Palace, where cultural performances are held nightly, and the Ubud Writers Festival is launched every year in October.
