About Valdosta, Georgia

This beautiful city doubles as the county seat of Lowndes County. It's been a popular place for centuries – its history spans back to the Creek and Seminole Native Americans.

It sits proudly on the Southern border of Georgia, and has grown much since it was founded way back in 1860. It used to be the center for the cotton farming industry. But, that has really died down and been replaced by tourism.

Valdosta has a very interesting history as it acted as a refuge for those fleeing the American Civil War. You can find out more about that in downtown Valdosta’s museums.

It's a great spot for a vacation, and can get really hot in the summer – up to 90 F! It gets quite cold in the winter too (around 40 F), so have a think about when you want to visit.

As you stroll around the streets, you may think you recognize it – and, you're probably right! This city has been the location for several films, including Zombieland (starring Woody Harrelson).

They filmed the end scenes at the nearby Wild Adventures Theme Park... but, more on that later!

What to do

History fans – your first port of call should be the Lowndes Historical Society & Museum. It will tell you everything you need to know about this wonderful city, and a bit more besides!

If you'd rather get involved with a sports game than a museum exhibit, we'd suggest going to one of the stadiums and trying to catch one of the university team's home games!

To keep the kids entertained, why not go to the Wild Adventures Theme Park? There are great views, exciting rides and water slides.

And, if that wasn't enough, there's a zoo too! You can spend whole days there cooling off in the sun and enjoying seeing the kids play with new friends.

Visit the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area. You can walk through the wetlands and discover all the animals that live there – you might be lucky and spot an alligator.

But, don't get too close! Climb to the top of the tower for a fantastic view of the wetlands.

If you're into art, head to the Turner Center. It's in downtown Valdosta and is a great way to spend the afternoon. Specially selected exhibits are set up each month celebrating local, regional and international artists.
