Left on 11/11/2012 for a stay in October 2012
We visited in October and had an extremely relaxing holiday. I was a little apprehensive before going as had read an awful review on the forum. Luckily review wasn't at all fair or accurate. We stayed in a comfortable apartment with a lovely terrace overlooking the waterfall. On the whole we dined in but did eat in the restaurant a couple of times. Food was really good and our hosts charming. Molina la ratonera is a little off the beaten track and requires driving over a rough track but that didn't concern my husband. There is a lovely pool, a gym and little library. Owners have made every effort to welcome their guests. My only tiny tiny criticism is that the bed was a bit hard but some people might like this. Overall I highly recommend this place if you like to get away from it all and enjoy the Spanish countryside.

Left on 09/08/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We have today returned from a two week holiday at Molino La Ratonera we stayed in El Granero a two bedroom self catering apartment next to the waterfall.
The accommodation was comfortable and well equipped for four people, it was clean and well furnished. The pool was wonderful for swimming the water wonderfully soft.
The area is a tranquil haven abundant with wild life, birds, turtles, beautiful black bees. Wonderful walks in the rural countryside, not meeting a soul some mornings.
Amazing night skies with no light pollution.
Andy and Kath served delicious home cooked food in the restaurant and there was always fresh peppers, aubergines and tomatoes in the mill shop to buy.
Kath and andy were available if needed but their presence did not make one feel that you were being constantly observed by the owners.
A truly lovely break from our hectic workday life. Recommended if you want an away from it all holiday. -

Left on 08/12/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Due to the size of our party we rented El Granero and La Panderia, both two bedroom apartments, for two weeks this July 2012. Molina la Ratonera has been beautifully converted and is in the most lovely setting in rural andalucia. The apartments were very comfortable, clean and well equipped and the pool is absolutely idyllic. Kath and andy are wonderful hosts and could not have been more helpful. We bought freshly laid eggs, newly dug potatoes and just harvested corn on the cob, courgettes and tomatoes (as well as very reasonably priced wine and other drinks) from the honesty shop at Molino. Our kids must have devoured the entire harvest of corn on the cob, it was so good. At the beginning and end of the holiday we had delicious set three course meals in the restaurant. In addition there is a very well stocked library on site with lots of tourist and local information including maps and suggested walks in the locality. We didn't use the gym (!) but it looked very impressive. Molino la Ratonera makes a very good base for exploring andalusia. A tip for occasional walkers - sturdy footwear is definitely required. Also you do really need to hire a car if you want to get out and about as public transport is not great. If you like lively nightlife and shopping, this is not the place for you. If you long for peace, relaxation and experience authentic rural Spain, don't look any further. This was our first visit but will definitely not be the last.

We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Andy & Kath are attentive & helpful hosts without intruding. El Granero is a comfortable, well equipped apartment in a lovely position, with a large terrace overlooking the stream & waterfall. A great place to sit & relax, offering some welcome shade, if required. The apartment is perfectly situated to observe the abundant birdlife. Ideally located for walks, bike rides or exploring further afield by car, alternatively you could simply relax by the pool. On site there is an honesty bar, mill restaurant for lovely home cooked meals and a library should you forget your holiday reading. All in all an ideal base for a perfect holiday.

Left on 12/09/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We stayed with Kath and andy this summer without really knowing anything about the place, but hoping to be able to relax for a while after a particularly hectic year. Molino out did our wildest expectations for peace, tranquility and pleasant surroundings. We were made totally welcome from the moment we arrived. Having the fridge stocked with a welcome pack is a nice touch too. We stayed in September and the weather was lovely allowing full use of the spotless pool and terrace. We enjoyed our stay so much that we returned a couple of weeks later which allowed us to sample a second apartment. Both were very comfortable. One really nice design feature is in the layout of the balconies which are positioned so that they don't overlook each other affording a high level of privacy. As the reader will have gathered we can't recommend Molino La Ratonera too highly and will be returning as soon as possible.

The approach
Finding the place wasn't hard, especially with a GPS, the road up to the villa is safe but a real dirt track covered in large stones so take it easy with your rental vehicle. We hired an obscene business class vehicle which was the wrong type of car to take along this road but it handled it well. Our hosts Kath and andy provided excellent directions even though we managed to follow them wrong (my fault).
The Hosts
Kath and andy are great, very friendly and looked after us well. We'd have liked to spend some more time with them but they were always quite busy except when we need them :)
The Service
Fantastic, they really look after you, there are some rules which need to be followed so worth reading the welcome pack before you jump into the pool. Nothing untoward, no glass by the pool, don't use the provided towels while swimming, they were the ones we got wrong. The only thing we were surprised at was the 4Euro charge per towel for pool towels, I was fine as brought my own, my companions moaned a bit. In the end however it's important to understand that this is self catering with added benefits and Kath and andy have a business to run and they do it wonderfully!
The House
We rented the two bedroom next to the pool, it was amazing, gorgeous as well, with a veranda for breakfast and evening tea, a shorter walk to the pool (about 30 seconds) and no stairs (ideal for disabled guests). I was incredibly disappointed with the WiFi (intermittent 1 bar on laptops, phones etc) until on day three I unplugged and replugged in the router and voila, 5 bars and could even get a signal by the pool. We had a small ant infestation one morning when they discovered a spot of jam on the counter. A 2 minute extermination later and we were not bothered again by the little rascals. Keep those surfaces spotless and the floor swept / mopped. No loo roll to be flushed down the toilet but this is rural Spain so that goes with the territory. Double bed was very comfy, the singles were a bit creaky and tiny but did the job. Extremely quiet nights and very peaceful days :)
The Pool
Yes this gets it's very own section because, what a pool! Deep enough to dive in one one end (over 6ft deep) and chlorine free. It required a wasp clean up every half an hour but it was bliss. The area around the pool is a regular sun trap, not that you need that in Spain. Packed with sun chairs and night lighting, this was the highlight of my visit :D
Conclusion
amazing trip, great accommodation, excellent hosts, we'd recommend it to anyone! Just remember this is country living with a 30 minute drive to civilization (Zagra excluded although it's a delightful small village with a few shops). -

BelfastInstantaneous 'R and R' in Molino de ratonera
Left on 08/23/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We have just returned fully rested and rejuvenated from our week at Ratonera. This was our first ever trip to Spain and we were completely struck by the beauty of the landscape surrounding our accomodation and the level of comfort and facilities(e.g.wifi) within. The proximity to Malaga airport was a bonus, ensuring that we did not waste too much of our short break travelling. The children loved the pool and enjoyed our delicious Spanish meal in the restaurant. It was a delight to find the fridge stocked with our first breakfast; with no need for an initial dash to the shops we began to relax straightaway. The weather was very hot but the Granero apartment was perfectly cool and it was lovely to listen to the musical accompaniment of the waterfall beside us. We did some sightseeing despite the heat and enjoyed the towns of Priego and Iznajar, and the stunning views as we drove around. Kath and andy were fabulous hosts: we were made to feel really welcome. Our best holiday ever. We will definitely return.

First class service and met on arrival by Kath.
The apartment was spacious and nicely furnished and featured a large private balcony.
The website hints at the beautiful location but in reallity it exceeded our expectation. We had selected this particular property as a base for walking and bird watching and was perfect for this.
Andy and Kath are wonderful hosts and great cooks - food and wine was excellent. They make great hosts and are there for you if you want them and discrete if you don't.
The self service (and keep your own honesty tab) bar works well and drinks are cheap!
All in all somewhere that does exactly what is says on the tin and more.
The official website is accurate and informative and is perfectly representative of what exists.
Excellent value and a total recommendation. -

From the minute I discovered this gem in a magazine we were onto a winner! Kath and andy couldn't have been more helpful or accomodating from booking to final departure. We booked into El Granero and it was a fantastic haven - with nothing but the sound of the waterfall and birds it was real chill time - much needed..we travelled with 2 teenagers and Kath and andy were really helpful with all our requests for information - they catered for our dietry needs and teenagers fussy fads and the restaurant food was excellent. The provision of breakfast with home laid eggs on that first morning was wonderful - they couldn't keep up with our demand for more eggs! Home grown organic produce and local oil is a fantastic help when self catering..We were very lucky and had the place to ourselves which meant that we didn't have to share the pool - a definate bonus. The location is wonderful but you need a good car to tackle the dirt track to it - all part of the experience and quite fun if not a little scary after dark! I have never been back to a holiday destination twice - but here I would definatrely make an exception..
