Description from owner

Description

La Cascade takes its name from the small mill stream that tumbles down, right opposite the front door. It's part of an 18th century water-powered olive mill, Le Moulin de la Montre (spot the remains of the old sundial), and a small bridge leads to your private patio with wild fig and vines. You're only 10 mins walk under the plane trees from the unspoilt village of Aups with its Wednesday and Saturday markets, bakeries, cafes and numerous exceptional restaurants.

With 2 double bedrooms, a traditional kitchen, bathroom, separate wc and lounge (with an extra double sofa-bed, so 6 guests at a push), La Cascade enjoys a panoramic view over Aups towards the mountain ranges of Provence to the south. With many local festivals, a wide range of activities and delightful hill villages nearby it is ideally situated for exploring the beautiful, turquoise Lac St Croix (20 mins by car) and the spectacular Gorge du Verdon (30 mins). Parking at the Moulin for 2 or 4 wheels.

Notes on accommodation:

Any heating for cooler days is by wall-mounted electric heaters. There are ceiling fans in each room with extra, portable fans available for the height of the summer. The plashing of the channeled millstream is a refreshing background to your stay and the stream is small enough to be no danger for children. From the kitchen you look out onto a field on one side and on the other, over the back courtyard with its disused aqueduct to fields and the wooded hillside above.

Further details:

Known as a "village de charactere", Aups, dating from the 12th century, has a long and fascinating history marked by many ancient chapels, convents, fortifications, wrought iron bell cages, street fountains and communal lavoirs (laundries). Amply provided with village shops there is a good-sized supermarket (Intermarche) on the outskirts of town. The year-round Wednesday and Saturday markets are supplemented (in late Nov-Feb) by a Thursday truffle market, rated as the third most important in France, and the black, winter truffles are a feature of the local 'menus gastronomiques'.

In season Aups is an area renowned for its hunting (chasse), particularly wild boar, and fishing (peche) and permits can be obtained in the village. It is wonderful walking, riding and cycling country. There is cricket played on the ground behind the chateau at Entrecasteaux (18km). Immediately below Le Moulin de Montre is the working, and award-winning, Gervasoni olive mill and olive oil museum. Most summer weeks feature visits from a fair or circus or outside concert under the plane trees in the main square which are also where you'll find the inevitable boule games. There are tennis courts in the village though the village swimming pool is due/undergoing restoration at the moment.

Interaction with guest

My favourite is to be at the mill and welcome guests personally and enjoy a barbecue together on the panoramic terrace which is perfect for a sundowner. However that's just a couple of weeks during the season. Otherwise, the digital locks mean once our guests have the code their arrival time is as they wish and no issues over meet-and-greets. In advance, should they wish it, I can offer varieties of routes to Aups S of Lyon and recommended overnight stops. Following arrival I'll make a further briefing call, regarding practicals like rubbish and recycling but predominantly to introduce the my and previous guests' "not to be missed" list of explorations & restaurants and the best panoramic views round the Gorge de Verdon. “Think twice before booking this”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2020

I had a terrible stay here. Exhaustive, traumatising, vicious mosquito attacks from 5 pm to 9 am each day/night. Closed windows almost shut each day at 5.pm and kept closed until 9 am, sweltering and … More

Response from the owner Well, as you see this guest had an unsettling stay at La C, but disasters can be 2-way and so to was my overall experience with this particular guest, though there were a couple of kindnesses rendered for which I am still grateful. A comparison with the other reviews here will indicate a considerable disparity and from my experience the issues she indicates were predominantly self-made. Because of her sensitivities she refused to use any of the mosquito traps, repellents or coils that were on offer. Learning of her light sensitivity I fitted extra excluding strips around the shutters in the bedroom which have proved perfectly acceptable without them to guests over 15 years of rentals. She chose not to use the large double garage barn on the front of the property for parking her small car. I normally have 2 Volvo estates in there and it has accommodated a camper van! She originally booked for 2 months and I gave her a 30% reduction and allowed her to pay for one month in advance to help her cash-flow but within a day she'd decided to stay for only one but insisted at the same rate. Etc, etc. It was indeed a sad experience for us both and I urge you who read this with the thought of coming to La C to contact me for clearance of any queries it provokes

Response from the owner It was a pleasure Arild to overlap with you and your parents and to hear of your explorations locally and afar. The surrounding woods and the extraordinary Grottes Madeleine all add to the magical ambience of La Cascade. Sorry not to have got to join you in Tai Chi on the terrace. Response from the owner Thanks and it was a pleasure to overlap with you, even just briefly. The magnificent scenery of the Gorge de Verdon and the magical turquoise Lac Ste Croix certainly seem to have woven their spell with you and driving that Porsche round the gorge must have been a thrill!. “Character Apartment in fabulous location, in Aups.”

Reviewed 20 Nov 2014

The location of this apartment is simply perfect, within walking distance of Aups for good eateries in the evening. By day it is very easy to explore all that the region has to offer and perfectly located for the Gorge du Verdon and Provencal villages. The Apartment is very old, with bundles of character, but internally would benefit from a bit of a spruce up; some may say "shabby chic" - I guess it depends on your taste. It suited our family of three perfectly for one week, but I wouldn't like to squeeze more people in. The beds are not great and very lifeless pillows, but great supply of everyday items is left in the apartment on a use it and replace basis which was very welcome - as was the welcome bottle of wine. The owner was an absolute delight to deal with - very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We would return and I would recommend to others, as it is great value for money.

“A lovely property in a great position”

Reviewed 16 Jul 2014

We arrived in Aups after an overnight stop in Macon, and found La Cascade easily by following the signs to the nearby olive mill which sells olive oil and related products. The keypad on the door saves problems finding keys, so we were quickly installed and felt at home. Essential supplies of coffee, condiments etc are provided which was very helpful. The kitchen is fully equipped and was very clean, as was the whole place. Rooms are spacious and in the hot weather were pleasantly cool, due to the massive stone walls. The property is a few minutes walk from Aups, which is a thriving community which is not solely dependent on the tourist trade. There are all the shops you are likely to need and a vibrant market twice a week. There are many delightful villages around, and the Gorge du Verdon is spectacular and needs at least one full day trip to explore. The south coast is also easily reached for a day trip to places such as St Tropez which is best visited by a regular ferry from St Maxime, where parking is easy very close to the harbour for a few Euros. After such expeditions it was great to relax at La Cascade and see the distant mountain views and the swifts and kites flying around. Occasional melodious church bells could be heard, but never disturbed our sleep at all.
