“Beautiful Surprise” After travelling up from Southampton, Hampshire, we arrived at 10.15pm on a wet November evening, weariness faded upon opening the door to Englewood, as reality was better than Sykes description. The kitchen is well equipped and a dinner party would be easy as there is plenty of cutlery crockery and serving dishes. The next morning we woke to the beautiful view from both back and front bedrooms, and the garden is delightful with a bubbling stream on the other side of the garden. Misty our dog loved it, would have loved to have a swim even more, but not suitable for that as stream flows over rocks. The open fire in the lounge made evenings so warm and cosy and the furniture is very comfortable and easily seats 6. Lots of literature gave us ideas for places to visit. The bed was the best we'd ever staying in, I have chronic back problems and dread new beds, I had perfect nights sleep from day one thank you. We loved the paintings by the owner around the cottage, wanted to sneak a couple home with us! Thank you we will be back.

“Recreation, pure nature and millions of sheeps.” A nice and cosy cottage. Welcome-eggs. The cottage is small but enough for 2 adults. It is not easy to find if you are not from Great Britain. We missed the small road two times. But when we reached the "goal" it was, for us, typical English, nice and kind. We had a wonderful week with good weather and not so good weather. And I had never seen so much sheeps in my live.

SHEPHERD'S COTTAGE, pet friendly, character holiday cottage, with a garden in

Middleton in Teesdale house

  • 2 bedrooms
  • 1 bathroom
  • sleeps 5

“Stunningly secluded, brilliant cottage” Where do I start? This was my second visit in six months and it felt like "coming home". Mrs. Scott (the owner) and her daughter keep their well-appointed cottage in excellent condition there's even a small collection of dvd's and board games should the weather turn nasty; I was there when the a1 was flooded for three days. Their welcome was as warm and friendly as before (the first time I was there I was even able to borrow a hairdryer as I'd forgotten mine!). The cottage is exactly as it's described, secluded. I went there to write in peace and found precisely that. The landlord and landlady at the local pub are great and the food is excellent - try the cheese platter - although it's a tad more than a five minute walk from Shepherd's Cottage. If you're into walking then this is the place to be; the sorrounding countryside is magnificent. What didn't I like? Having to leave.

THE OLD DRAPERY, country holiday cottage in Haltwhistle, Ref 9821

Haltwhistle house

  • 1 bedroom
  • 1 bathroom
  • sleeps 2

“Nice place; handy for Hadrian's Wall.” Nice loft flat that's very handy for Hadrian's Wall. Makes a good base for folks with 2 cars doing point-to-point walks. The flat is much better than the entrance way and hallways. Nicely furnished and the kitchen is well-equipped. My one complaint is that the taps in the kitchen and bathroom are very cheaply finished. The bathroom sink and shower both leaked from our arrival. Overall, very handy for the local grocery store and pubs. Haltwhistle itself is lacking in depth in restaurants and pubs, but there is a very handy chip shop just down the High Street. "The Milecastle Inn" is a very nice pub just 3 miles away, on the Military Road, that does good food.

HOUGHTON NORTH FARM COTTAGE, family friendly, country holiday cottage in

Heddon-on-the-Wall house

  • 2 bedrooms
  • 2 bathrooms
  • sleeps 4

“Lovely cottage with modern amenities and plenty of space” We stayed at Houghton North Farm Cottage while we were visiting my parents and family. We wanted somewhere we could hold a first birthday party for our son, so we needed somewhere with enough space. The cottage was very well apointed, and looked like it had been decorated/renovated quite recently. The huge sliding door in the kitchen (more of a moveable glass wall really!) was impressive, and both bathrooms were beautifully finished. We were impressed by the lovely solid wood furniture in the cottage, which seemed to be of a high standard. We had enough space to accomodate about 15 family members for the birthday party. The cottage is on a working farm, and the owners were friendly and pleasant when we arrived. Once we were booked in, they pretty much left us alone to get on with it, which suited us perfectly. The location suited us perfectly - close enough to Newcastle to be convenient for visiting family, but far enough out to feel more peaceful. It would be a nice base from which to visit places in the Tyne valley and along Hadrian's Wall. The only slight negative I can think of is a lack of outdoor space. There's a small concrete "yard" just outside the kitchen, but no grass area or garden. It wasn't a problem for us at all, but some people may miss having somewhere nicer to sit outdoors.

Haltwhistle house

“Beautifully decorated and furnished.” This is a lovely place for a couple to stay. It makes a great base for a touring holiday in Northumberland. In walking distant of Hadrian's Wall. The inside is done to a very high standard and is comfortable. There's plenty of shops, cafes and pubs in the village. The only downside is that it's on a main road but that didn't detract from our enjoyment of our holiday in any way.
