Oscoda cottage

“Great location, clean and comfortable.” I spent a weekend with friends and we all enjoyed the cottage. It was very clean and quiet. It accommodated four adults comfortably and has all the amenities in the kitchen and bathroom, complete with good tasting city water you can drink from the tap and strong water pressure. The Smart TV in the living room with wifi provided entertainment for music and movies. And there's a nice kitchen table for games and meals. In addition to the comforts, the location is really great. The cottage is beachfront and has large windows giving you a view of Lake Huron from both the living room and Kitchen. Depending on your plans for the weekend, it really is the perfect spot for a girls' weekend such as I did, or I could see bringing my family here, or booking it with another small family. I stayed during Winter, but I noticed there are some nice swings, a fire pit, and the beach for long walks to make a summer stay fun. There's also a party store across the street and a full grocery store a quick drive away. We ordered pizza one night and that was convenient too. I definitely plan to stay again and would recommend it to others.

About East Tawas

With a wonderful “Up-North/Small Town” appeal, East Tawas Michigan and its Lake Huron shoreline are idyllic settings for a memorable family vacation. To find the best East Tawas vacation rentals available, search FlipKey where you’ll find something to suit every taste and budget.

About East Tawas

Found on Michigan’s Sunrise Coast, East Tawas has a population of just fewer than 3,000 and shares the same shoreline and beaches with the neighboring town of Tawas. The area was first inhabited by the Chippewa Indians hundreds of years ago.

In 1629, the French explorer, Jean Nicolet, became the first European to arrive here. However, except for fur traders, the area remained unsettled until the Saginaw Treaty between the government and the local Native American’s was signed in 1819.

A lighthouse was the first permanent structure to be built in the area. It stood at Tawas Point and was vital as transporting lumber by sea was the area's main money maker.

Today, the beach is a huge draw for summer vacationers as are the many hunting, fishing and bird watching opportunities available in the surrounding forest.

Rent a traditional kayak to explore the Au Sable River while trying to spot the endangered migratory Piping plover.

What to do

It just so happens that Tawas Bay is on the flight path for many migratory birds, making it a mecca of sorts for North American birders all looking to be able to cross the endangered Piping plover and Kirkland’s warbler off their list.

Lake Huron and the Au Sable River are perfect for watersports such as boating, sailing, canoeing, jet skiing, fishing and, most recently, a favorite destination for kite surfers.

Fishing is available year-round and includes northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, smallmouth bass and brown trout. Just before and after summer steelhead, brown trout, lake trout, and walleye all swim close to the shore elevating the expense of a boat. If fly fishing is your sport, cast a line into the Au Sable for a rising trout.

Ice fishing for Lake Perch is a popular winter activity, as is snowmobiling and cross country skiing.

Top East Tawas travel tips

Depending on what you plan to do, East Tawas is a four-season resort with plenty of things to do in the height of summer and the depth of winter.

Fish the Au Sable River from Alcona Dam to Lake Huron for the most powerful steelhead in the Great Lakes basin. The fish were introduced here from the McCloud River in California more than 100 years ago.

Attend the annual Perchville Festival in the winter for fun on the ice that includes a Polar Bear dip in Lake Huron, it is a one-of-a-kind Michigan experience you don’t want to miss!
