About Ludington

Ludington has a lot to offer—and that's not just in outdoor pursuits!

This town is very proud of its history. The first residents arrived in 1847! It quickly became the seat of Mason County, as it built its first courthouse in 1855. You can still see it today, in its former glory, in the historic village. Make sure you check it out!

Back in the day, Ludington was known for its logging and sawmills, so the town grew quickly and achieved city status in 1873.

As time went on, it became a shipping port, and 50 years after that, it became the biggest car ferry port in the world.

Michigan is also known for being one of the biggest asparagus growers in the US. So you can expect to find it in lots of local dishes. Apples, blueberries and cherries are big here, too—they even put them in the staple Michigan Chicken Salad. Be sure to try it!

What to do in Ludington

Experience life in Michigan in the early 1900s at the Historic White Pine Village. You can check out a 150-year-old courtroom, infant school and the office of the local doctor while restoring your energy levels at the Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor. It’s like being on the set of Little house on the Prairie@

Rent a canoe and paddle leisurely along the gorgeous Pere Marquette National Scenic River while checking out birds, wildlife, flora and fauna. Near Baldwin, the river lies in the heart of The Huron Manistee National Forest and it's a great place to see.

Head on down to Stearns Park, Michigan's favorite beach—all 2500 feet of it—and you'll find plenty of free parking for your hire car. Nearby House of Flavors sells impressive ice cream.

Hike a mile out to Big Sable Point Lighthouse which, despite being built back in 1867, continues to serve the area today. En-route, you can discover tales of shipwrecked boats.

As you can see, there's plenty going on outdoor—there's also sailing and fishing for you water lovers. But landlubbers can enjoy mini-golf and the skate park at Stearns Park, so everyone will be happy.

Of course, you can also get to Ludington via ferry from Wisconsin ($59 one-way). The trip takes five hours, but there's a restaurant and bar on the boat and you can walk around on deck in the fresh air while admiring the view.
