About North Fork

×

Panoramic views, unspoiled beaches and vast vineyards, Suffolk County’s North Fork is a true vacation gem. Even Albert Einstein thought so; staying here in the summer of 1939, he described the period as “the happiest” of his life. To see what so appealed to Einstein, do the smart thing and book a FlipKey vacation rental yourself.

About North Fork

On the eastern side of Long Island, sitting approximately 75 miles from Manhattan, North Fork is a narrow peninsula stretching for 30 miles. It consists of 11 small hamlets and villages and sits almost parallel with South Fork (home to the Hamptons).

North Fork is renowned as being fabulous wine country. There are 35 vineyards in the area. The first was Hargrave in 1974, and it continues today as Castello De Borghese. It also enjoys a reputation for excellent farm produce thanks to the combination of incredibly fertile soil and wonderful weather.

An Indian tribe known as the Corchaugs were the first settlers on North Fork, followed by a group of English settlers in 1640. Today the non-urbanized North Folk is regarded as a rural idyll where farmers reside alongside wealthy stockbrokers and weekend vacationers.

What to do

Hop on board a ferry to take you to the South Fork and the famous Hamptons—a seaside resort full of mansions. Next day, take another ferry to Shelter Island and marvel at the colonial-revival architecture and the sweet independent grocery stores.

Get a feel for the land by going pumpkin and berry picking at the 'agritainment venues' if you happy to be there during the fall season.

Go shelling at the lovely Orient Beach State Park and spot some wildlife while you’re there.

Immerse yourself in the culture of the island by checking out several of its dinky museums—such as the lighthouse, firefighting and maritime museums.

Definitely take a ride on the gorgeous antique carousel in Greenport. It sits on the shorefront and is just $2 a go!

Top travel tips

Get a train from Manhattan to Greenport on North Fork, or get to the Fork by boat (there are plenty of marinas—both public and private). You could also get here by bus from Manhattan or drive from New York in two hours. Be warned: there are so many gorgeous farm stalls and food shacks en-route that driving might take longer than you think!

The area is beautiful in both spring and fall: spring for the flowers and fall to stock up on all the lovely farm produce you'll encounter. Summer is hot and winter usually brings snow.

Nature's bounty shows itself in its full glory in North Fork, whether it’s in the foliage and produce in fall or the pretty roadside blooms and birds in spring. This is a place worth visiting.
