About Pittsburgh
The 63rd-largest city in the US was once known as ‘The Steel City’ thanks to its thriving steel industry. Pittsburgh has been shaped by its immigrants; the first settlers here were the English, with the Scots, Irish, Welsh and Germans arriving soon after. By the late 1800s, workers from Europe began to arrive, and today the city is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities.
Nowhere is this melting pot more evident than in Pittsburgh’s diverse neighborhoods, each with its own unique heritage. From the hustle and bustle of Downtown to the North Side with its museums, there’s plenty to see and do here.
Make sure you stop off for a Primanti Sandwich – french fries, coleslaw and the fillings of your choice all sandwiched between two slices of Italian bread. Other local specialties include fish sandwiches, chipped ham, city chicken and of course, Pierogies (dumplings).
What to do
Start your vacation with a trip to the North Side, where you’ll find the Andy Warhol Museum, as well as the nearby Mattress Factory for contemporary art. The Mexican War Streets neighborhood is home to brightly painted houses, for great photo opportunities.
Soak up some local history with a trip to the Heinz History Center, where you can learn about things that were invented in Pittsburgh (like the Ferris wheel!), then check out the Carnegie Museums and the Natural History Museum, both of which are great for a family day out.
Ride the funicular at the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines. Built in the 1870s, it’s a fantastic ride to the top, almost 400 feet above the city, with spectacular views from Mount Washington.
The nightlife here is buzzing, too – check out some of the dining options in hip and happening Lawrenceville and end the night on Butler Street, with its trendy wine bars.
Top Pittsburgh travel tips
Pittsburgh International Airport is 20 miles west of downtown and can be easily reached by hotel shuttle, a city bus (connecting directly to downtown), or a cab.
Buses here are reliable - but paying your fare can be confusing! For journeys traveling out of/away from downtown, fares are payable when you reach your destination, while for journeys going into/towards downtown, you pay when you board the bus. Rather confusingly, for all journeys between 7pm-4am, payment is taken when you board.
