About Sliema

Once a tiny fishing village, Sliema expanded during the 19th century to become one of Malta’s main coastal resorts, along with neighboring St Julian’s. The town has a long association with the upper classes and retains its affluent feel, and, unusually, you’ll find that English is the main language spoken here.

The compact town center is best explored on foot, and with street names written in both Maltese and English, it’s difficult to get lost here. If you fancy relaxing, there are some great spots for swimming and sunbathing in secluded coves and on rocky beaches.

May to June and September to October are the best times to visit, with temperatures ranging from 19-24 degrees centigrade – you’ll find the sea here is warm enough for swimming all year round!

What to do

Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular activities here, and there are a number of dive centers in and around Sliema. Dive sites in the area include Fortizza Reef, a great spot for underwater photography, and the wreck of the HMS Maori, sunk in 1942. Most dive centers cater for all abilities and are happy to rent equipment.

For something a little more laidback, why not enjoy a day of shopping at Malta’s largest mall? The Point, just east of Sliema, is situated on ground where the Great Siege of 1565 was fought.

With long sunny days and balmy weather, dining al fresco in Malta is a must. In Sliema, you’ll find 18th-century seafront villas and cozy restaurants with leafy piazzas, serving traditional Maltese cooking. Seafood here is ridiculously fresh, and you can also try local dishes such as Timpana, a pie filled with pasta in a meat and tomato sauce.

Top Sliema travel tips

For those looking for lively nightlife in St Julian’s, July and August might be a better time to visit than the spring and autumn months, as many clubs and bars stay open later during the summer.

Getting around the area is easy thanks to a reliable bus service, and if you want to head for St Julian’s or Valletta, there are regular buses – although you could always take the scenic route and travel by ferry to Valletta from Tigne Seafront in Sliema.

Brilliant from arrival to departure

We arrived June 4th for a week and steeping off the plane to be met by a taxi arranged by ralph and his team was the start of a great week. We were met at the apartment by Steve who showed us the ropes leaving contact numbers etc. The apartment more than lived up to expectations - it was well equipped (though I would suggest that 1/2 vanity shelves in the bathrooms would be helpful if there was more than 2 using them) with fantastic views across the bay to Valetta and Manoel Island. Using the local buses was a dream - 6.5 Euros for a 7 day bus pass that can take you anywhere on the island. The local ferry across from Sliema to Valetta is across the road and you get fantastic views of Valetta and Sliema from the water. The island is very welcoming and so much to do that caters for all ages from ferry trips, museums, walking tours, excellent restaurants. Try going to The Three Islands and see how the 'other half' spend their leisure time on mind boggling yachts whilst having a cooling drink sat at the waterfronts. Gozo is well worth a visit and we took the local bus up to the ferry and then picked up a Sightseeing Tour bus. Fantastic Location, Great Stay

Our stay at Jame's apartment was excelllent. On entering the property, we thought it to be very spacious and beautifully decorated, clean and modern. The attention to detail was very good and it had everything we needed for a fantastic stay. We had to contact James during our stay and he replied immediately to our message. The location of the property is also great, around a 10min walk to the Sliema seafront with numerous bars and restuarants and a bus stop directly outside. We used the bus service on numerous occasions as it was really easy to get around the Island, you buy the tickets on the bus and a One Day Pass to use as many journeys as you like was just 1.50euro, Fantastic value. One tiny critisism, maybe we should have 4 patio chairs not only 2, as the property caters for 4 people. Completely refurbished apt in old Sliema. Everything new and first-class, and very tastefully decorated. Located nearby St Julian's Bay. All necessaries were w/in short walking distance. We walked, rode MTA and took ferries & tours, never needing a vehicle. Great restaurants nearby.
