“Cottage living at its finest!” My partner and I stayed here for the weekend in December and had a lovely time. The owners left no detail overlooked. The cottage was meticulously clean and well decorated to make it truly feel like a home. The fireplace, outdoor deck, in-unit laundry, and bikes were also nice extras. The location of the cottage is quite ideal -- a very short walk to the incredible Lake Michigan, the cute downtown area of Union Pier and walking/biking areas. The fabulous town of New Buffalo, the amazing Warren Dunes State Park, fine dining, wineries, great stores, and other beaches are not far either. Can't wait to come back -- winter, spring, fall or summer! Thanks again!

“My 30 day Military Leave from afghanistan at Sanctuaire” Hi Mona- I'm back in afghanistan. Thank you for a wonderful stay at Sanctuaire. My family loved it! The house was wonderful, a dream come true. I set up the camera one morning in the rain and pointed it at the lake to capture the peace and serenity of Sanctuaire, just so I could have a piece of it to take back here with me. Thank you for allowing my family and I to share your little piece of heaven!

About Union Pier

Soft sandy beaches, forest trails, winery tours and fruit picking... a vacation in Union Pier is as relaxing as you want it to be. Not the outdoors type? Then visit the galleries or rummage in the quaint antique shops. Just make sure you book your FlipKey vacation rental soon before the best spots get booked up!

About Union Pier

Set in Harbor County, a 90 square mile region north of the Indiana border, Union Pier is a former logging community. It sits between Lake Michigan and the Galien River. The town's name comes from a pier constructed specifically to ship timber by boat in the 1870s.

By the beginning of the next century, tourism replaced logging as the main economic activity. In fact, the entire Harbor County area with its beaches and quaint communities, all benefited from a temporary influx of city dwellers from Chicago and beyond during spring, summer and fall. Visitors to the region particularly appreciate the lush forests, country roads, winery trails and fruit-picking farms. Others are attracted by the art galleries, antique shops and museums.

In the past, the notorious Chicago gangster had homes in Union Pier and would regularly drink at the Lakeside Inn. Olympian Jesse Owens was also a resident.

What to do

Check out the beach and the strong surfing waves. Either go walking along the shore, or sunbathing and picnicking on the soft sand. Go right at the bottom of the stairs and take a look at the gorgeous lakeside properties, with their own private spot of beach. The public beach is below the stairs at the small parking area.

Treat yourself to an enhanced Tasting & Tour at St Julian Winery. For $25, you'll get an extended winery tour with either a cheese or chocolate pairing option. Book a week in advance to secure your place.

Cycle to the new Galien River County Park where you can go bird watching, trekking and fishing. Highlights include a 300' Canopy Walkway leading to a 60' high Marsh Overlook Tower. A 600' long Marsh Boardwalk, meanwhile, leads to the new River Viewing and Fishing Platform. Both have public access via walking trails.

Top Union Pier travel tips

Because the water at the local beach is warm it can attract many swimmers. However, it's worth remembering there are rip tides and waves strong enough to prove dangerous.

If traveling by car, then Interstate 94 will get you to Michigan and Exit 1 to Harbor Country. The nearest airport is South Bend Regional in Indiana, 32 miles from Union Pier. Get there by train from Chicago in one hour 15 minutes or by bus (two hours).

May through July are the best times to turn up at Union Pier, weather-wise. August is the wettest month and January the coldest, so take your pick!

Union Pier sounds idyllic with its mix of chilling-out beach and forestry facilities, combined with those interesting antique stores and galleries. You could definitely forget about the city here where life slows down. Book your Union Pier vacation rental with FlipKey now; they go quickly around these parts.

Eco-Secluded Lakefront House-Hot Tub-90 min from Chicago-Featured in NY Times!
My son would rather stay here than go to DisneyWorld!

This house was absolutely perfect for our needs, as well as being over the top beautiful. There was more than ample space for everyone, everyone had a bed room, all of such were lovely and comfortable, and there were many cozy sitting areas to share or find privacy in. Our 10 yr old son and his best friend loved swimming, fishing, cycling, boating and all the activities onsite- which made our job easier... There is a fabulous kitchen which is a joy to cook in, which works out well since there are truly food to table markets and roadstands minutes away. The home is in the heart of the wine country and lots of local sustainable produce markets and farms. This house has a great location yet private, quiet and secluded. The house was spotless and the beautiful Hot tub overlooking the lake was sparkling, well maintained and very relaxing. This house would be great any time of year, for a family or a couple, a great alternative to expensive hotels. We even stayed an extra night it was so relaxing! Kudos to you, Mona. Touch of Modern in cottage.

It was the absolute perfect 2 day getaway. We enjoyed all the cottage had to offer. Plenty of great places to eat and drink: Gordon's, Blue Plate and the Swedish Bakery were all perfect recommendations. The beach was a 5 minute walk down a beautiful pathway. The beach itself was magnificent, beautiful, clean and untouched, if you didn't know any better you'd swear it was an ocean. The amenities in the apartment are what all seek: internet, cable, a working fire place :) perfect for wine and a movie, washer, dryer and the most perfect decor for a cottage right near the lake. Many activities to do while there, horse back riding and picking grapes off the vine are a few. This cottage has not seen the last of us, we will be back.see more
