You can also, if you like, go on to the mountain pastures of Ortighera and Oro.You can go to Alpe Giumello by car. You can leave the car in the car park there and continue on foot towards Alpe Chiaro (20 min.). Here you will find a natural balcony overlooking Lake Como from which you can enjoy a view of the Alps. You can walk all around Monte Muggio in 2 hours enjoying views of the north end of the lake, the Valvarrone (Varrone valley) and Mount Legnone. The footpath winds through woods and alpine pastures and finishes at the car park.
You can get to Sanico from Margno by car in the direction of Narro. After the habitations you will come to a hairpin bend with a signpost to San Grato. After parking the car, go through the horse chestnut wood and in 5 minutes you will see the 14th-century church of San Grato. Here, you can enjoy a splendid view of the lake from spacious meadows where you can play and have a picnic.
You can reach Vendrogno from Margno along the ancient mule track which leads to the lake (1 hour 30 min.). If you continue down to Bellano, you pass Lezzeno where you can visit the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Lacrime (the weeping Madonna). At Bellano train station, you can catch the bus back up to Margno. You can walk from Taceno to Margno (30 min.) following the footpath which passes the ancient fortified hamlet of Bagnala which, in the high middle ages, controlled access to the upper Valsassina (valley). In the church of Taceno you can admire its ancient organ with 619 pipes. You can also visit the medieval area with its thirteen “windows on the past”, frescoes of images, faces and trades of alpine culture that tell the story of Taceno. You can return to Margno by bus.You can walk from Margno to Vegno (15 min.) and from there cross the meadows along the footpath which leads to Crandola. You can return to Margno along the main road. You can walk from Margno towards Codesino along the road between cowsheds and chicken coops to Casargo. A road behind the old dairy will take you along a winding road past an ancient washhouse. If you continue to Somadino you can visit the small church of Santa Margherita, the oldest in the valley.
These are just a few of the walks which are also suitable for young children. When it is sunny, you can walk along footpaths picking alpine strawberries, herbs and fruits of the forest with butterflies fluttering back and forth. In autumn you can pick mushrooms and chestnuts.
Lake Como (Bellano) is only 12 km from the Bed & Breakfast. Here are some of the destinations that are easily reached from Bellano.
In the hamlet of Oro which is just above Bellano there is a stretch of the Sentiero del Viandante (the Wayfarer's Way). This is the ancient mule track running north from S. Martino (Abbadia Lariana) for 35 km along the mountainside overlooking Lake Como. The mule track finishes in Colico in the vicinity of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pozzo (the Madonna of the well).
In Bellano, you can also visit the Orrido, a natural gorge carved out by the Pioverna torrent whose waters have modelled gigantic potholes and evocative caverns. You can catch sight of characters, who recall those from Andrea Vitali's books, walking along the alleyways and small piazzas of the medieval buildings and if you peep into the courtyards and entrances of the medieval houses, you can hear old women gossiping.
